    Integrating Simulink, OpenVX, and ROS for Model-Based Design of Embedded Vision Applications

    OpenVX is increasingly gaining consensus as standard platform to develop portable, optimized and power-efficient embedded vision applications. Nevertheless, adopting OpenVX for rapid prototyping, early algorithm parametrization and validation of complex embedded applications is a very challenging task. This paper presents a comprehensive framework that integrates Simulink, OpenVX, and ROS for model-based design of embedded vision applications. The framework allows applying Matlab-Simulink for the model-based design, parametrization, and validation of computer vision applications. Then, it allows for the automatic synthesis of the application model into an OpenVX description for the hardware and constraints-aware application tuning. Finally, the methodology allows integrating the OpenVX application with Robot Operating System (ROS), which is the de-facto reference standard for developing robotic software applications. The OpenVX-ROS interface allows co-simulating and parametrizing the application by considering the actual robotic environment and the application reuse in any ROS-compliant system. Experimental results have been conducted with two real case studies: An application for digital image stabilization and the ORB descriptor for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), which have been developed through Simulink and, then, automatically synthesized into OpenVX-VisionWorks code for an NVIDIA Jetson TX2 boar

    A model-based design flow for embedded vision applications on heterogeneous architectures

    The ability to gather information from images is straightforward to human, and one of the principal input to understand external world. Computer vision (CV) is the process to extract such knowledge from the visual domain in an algorithmic fashion. The requested computational power to process these information is very high. Until recently, the only feasible way to meet non-functional requirements like performance was to develop custom hardware, which is costly, time-consuming and can not be reused in a general purpose. The recent introduction of low-power and low-cost heterogeneous embedded boards, in which CPUs are combine with heterogeneous accelerators like GPUs, DSPs and FPGAs, can combine the hardware efficiency needed for non-functional requirements with the flexibility of software development. Embedded vision is the term used to identify the application of the aforementioned CV algorithms applied in the embedded field, which usually requires to satisfy, other than functional requirements, also non-functional requirements such as real-time performance, power, and energy efficiency. Rapid prototyping, early algorithm parametrization, testing, and validation of complex embedded video applications for such heterogeneous architectures is a very challenging task. This thesis presents a comprehensive framework that: 1) Is based on a model-based paradigm. Differently from the standard approaches at the state of the art that require designers to manually model the algorithm in any programming language, the proposed approach allows for a rapid prototyping, algorithm validation and parametrization in a model-based design environment (i.e., Matlab/Simulink). The framework relies on a multi-level design and verification flow by which the high-level model is then semi-automatically refined towards the final automatic synthesis into the target hardware device. 2) Relies on a polyglot parallel programming model. The proposed model combines different programming languages and environments such as C/C++, OpenMP, PThreads, OpenVX, OpenCV, and CUDA to best exploit different levels of parallelism while guaranteeing a semi-automatic customization. 3) Optimizes the application performance and energy efficiency through a novel algorithm for the mapping and scheduling of the application 3 tasks on the heterogeneous computing elements of the device. Such an algorithm, called exclusive earliest finish time (XEFT), takes into consideration the possible multiple implementation of tasks for different computing elements (e.g., a task primitive for CPU and an equivalent parallel implementation for GPU). It introduces and takes advantage of the notion of exclusive overlap between primitives to improve the load balancing.     Extending OpenVX for Model-based Design of Embedded Vision Applications

    Developing computer vision applications for lowpower heterogeneous systems is increasingly gaining interest in the embedded systems community. Even more interesting is the tuning of such embedded software for the target architecture when this is driven by multiple constraints (e.g., performance, peak power, energy consumption). Indeed, developers frequently run into system-level inefficiencies and bottlenecks that can not be quickly addressed by traditional methods. In this context OpenVX has been proposed as the standard platform to develop portable, optimized and powerefficient applications for vision algorithms targeting embedded systems. Nevertheless, adopting OpenVX for rapid prototyping, early algorithm parametrization and validation of complex embedded applications is a very challenging task. This paper presents a methodology to integrate a model-based design environment to OpenVX. The methodology allows applying Matlab/Simulink for the model-based design, parametrization, and validation of computer vision applications.     FPGA Accelerators on Heterogeneous Systems: An Approach Using High Level Synthesis

    La evolución de las FPGAs como dispositivos para el procesamiento con alta eficiencia energética y baja latencia de control, comparada con dispositivos como las CPUs y las GPUs, las han hecho atractivas en el ámbito de la computación de alto rendimiento (HPC).A pesar de las inumerables ventajas de las FPGAs, su inclusión en HPC presenta varios retos. El primero, la complejidad que supone la programación de las FPGAs comparada con dispositivos como las CPUs y las GPUs. Segundo, el tiempo de desarrollo es alto debido al proceso de síntesis del hardware. Y tercero, trabajar con más arquitecturas en HPC requiere el manejo y la sintonización de los detalles de cada dispositivo, lo que añade complejidad.Esta tesis aborda estos 3 problemas en diferentes niveles con el objetivo de mejorar y facilitar la adopción de las FPGAs usando la síntesis de alto nivel(HLS) en sistemas HPC.En un nivel próximo al hardware, en esta tesis se desarrolla un modelo analítico para las aplicaciones limitadas en memoria, que es una situación común en aplicaciones de HPC. El modelo, desarrollado para kernels programados usando HLS, puede predecir el tiempo de ejecución con alta precisión y buena adaptabilidad ante cambios en la tecnología de la memoria, como las DDR4 y HBM2, y en las variaciones en la frecuencia del kernel. Esta solución puede aumentar potencialmente la productividad de las personas que programan, reduciendo el tiempo de desarrollo y optimización de las aplicaciones.Entender los detalles de bajo nivel puede ser complejo para las programadoras promedio, y el desempeño de las aplicaciones para FPGA aún requiere un alto nivel en las habilidades de programación. Por ello, nuestra segunda propuesta está enfocada en la extensión de las bibliotecas con una propuesta para cómputo en visión artificial que sea portable entre diferentes fabricantes de FPGAs. La biblioteca se ha diseñado basada en templates, lo que permite una biblioteca que da flexibilidad a la generación del hardware y oculta decisiones de diseño críticas como la comunicación entre nodos, el modelo de concurrencia, y la integración de las aplicaciones en el sistema heterogéneo para facilitar el desarrollo de grafos de visión artificial que pueden ser complejos.Finalmente, en el runtime del host del sistema heterogéneo, hemos integrado la FPGA para usarla de forma trasparente como un dispositivo acelerador para la co-ejecución en sistemas heterogéneos. Hemos hecho una serie propuestas de altonivel de abstracción que abarca los mecanismos de sincronización y políticas de balanceo en un sistema altamente heterogéneo compuesto por una CPU, una GPU y una FPGA. Se presentan los principales retos que han inspirado esta investigación y los beneficios de la inclusión de una FPGA en rendimiento y energía.En conclusión, esta tesis contribuye a la adopción de las FPGAs para entornos HPC, aportando soluciones que ayudan a reducir el tiempo de desarrollo y mejoran el desempeño y la eficiencia energética del sistema.---------------------------------------------The emergence of FPGAs in the High-Performance Computing domain is arising thanks to their promise of better energy efficiency and low control latency, compared with other devices such as CPUs or GPUs.Albeit these benefits, their complete inclusion into HPC systems still faces several challenges. First, FPGA complexity means its programming more difficult compared to devices such as CPU and GPU. Second, the development time is longer due to the required synthesis effort. And third, working with multiple devices increments the details that should be managed and increase hardware complexity.This thesis tackles these 3 problems at different stack levels to improve and to make easier the adoption of FPGAs using High-Level Synthesis on HPC systems. At a close to the hardware level, this thesis contributes with a new analytical model for memory-bound applications, an usual situation for HPC applications. The model for HLS kernels can anticipate application performance before place and route, reducing the design development time. Our results show a high precision and adaptable model for external memory technologies such as DDR4 and HBM2, and kernel frequency changes. This solution potentially increases productivity, reducing application development time.Understanding low-level implementation details is difficult for average programmers, and the development of FPGA applications still requires high proficiency program- ming skills. For this reason, the second proposal is focused on the extension of a computer vision library to be portable among two of the main FPGA vendors. The template-based library allows hardware flexibility and hides design decisions such as the communication among nodes, the concurrency programming model, and the application’s integration in the heterogeneous system, to develop complex vision graphs easily.Finally, we have transparently integrated the FPGA in a high level framework for co-execution with other devices. We propose a set of high level abstractions covering synchronization mechanism and load balancing policies in a highly heterogeneous system with CPU, GPU, and FPGA devices. We present the main challenges that inspired this research and the benefits of the FPGA use demonstrating performance and energy improvements.<br /

    Optimization Techniques for Parallel Programming of Embedded Many-Core Computing Platforms

    Nowadays many-core computing platforms are widely adopted as a viable solution to accelerate compute-intensive workloads at different scales, from low-cost devices to HPC nodes. It is well established that heterogeneous platforms including a general-purpose host processor and a parallel programmable accelerator have the potential to dramatically increase the peak performance/Watt of computing architectures. However the adoption of these platforms further complicates application development, whereas it is widely acknowledged that software development is a critical activity for the platform design. The introduction of parallel architectures raises the need for programming paradigms capable of effectively leveraging an increasing number of processors, from two to thousands. In this scenario the study of optimization techniques to program parallel accelerators is paramount for two main objectives: first, improving performance and energy efficiency of the platform, which are key metrics for both embedded and HPC systems; second, enforcing software engineering practices with the aim to guarantee code quality and reduce software costs. This thesis presents a set of techniques that have been studied and designed to achieve these objectives overcoming the current state-of-the-art. As a first contribution, we discuss the use of OpenMP tasking as a general-purpose programming model to support the execution of diverse workloads, and we introduce a set of runtime-level techniques to support fine-grain tasks on high-end many-core accelerators (devices with a power consumption greater than 10W). Then we focus our attention on embedded computer vision (CV), with the aim to show how to achieve best performance by exploiting the characteristics of a specific application domain. To further reduce the power consumption of parallel accelerators beyond the current technological limits, we describe an approach based on the principles of approximate computing, which implies modification to the program semantics and proper hardware support at the architectural level

    Cross-vendor programming abstraction for diverse heterogeneous platforms

    Hardware specialization is a well-known means to significantly improve the performance and energy efficiency of various application domains. Modern computing systems consist of multiple specialized processing devices which need to collaborate with each other to execute common tasks. New heterogeneous programming abstractions have been created to program heterogeneous systems. Even though many of these abstractions are open vendor-independent standards, cross-vendor interoperability between different implementations is limited since the vendors typically do not have commercial motivations to invest in it. Therefore, getting good performance from vendor-independent heterogeneous programming standards has proven difficult for systems with multiple different device types. In order to help unify the field of heterogeneous programming APIs for platforms with hardware accelerators from multiple vendors, we propose a new software abstraction for hardware-accelerated tasks based on the open OpenCL programming standard. In the proposed abstraction, we rely on the built-in kernel feature of the OpenCL specification to define a portability layer that stores enough information for automated accelerator utilization. This enables the portability of high-level applications to a diverse set of accelerator devices with minimal programmer effort. The abstraction enables a layered software architecture that provides for an efficient combination of application phases to a single asynchronous application description from multiple domain-specific input languages. As proofs of the abstraction layer serving its purpose for the layers above and below it, we show how a domain-specific input description ONNX can be implemented on top of this portability abstraction, and how it also allows driving fixed function and FPGA-based hardware accelerators below in the hardware-specific backend. We also provide an example implementation of the abstraction to show that the abstraction layer does not seem to incur significant execution time overhead.publishedVersionPeer reviewe

    Sharing GPUs for Real-Time Autonomous-Driving Systems

    Autonomous vehicles at mass-market scales are on the horizon. Cameras are the least expensive among common sensor types and can preserve features such as color and texture that other sensors cannot. Therefore, realizing full autonomy in vehicles at a reasonable cost is expected to entail computer-vision techniques. These computer-vision applications require massive parallelism provided by the underlying shared accelerators, such as graphics processing units, or GPUs, to function “in real time.” However, when computer-vision researchers and GPU vendors refer to “real time,” they usually mean “real fast”; in contrast, certifiable automotive systems must be “real time” in the sense of being predictable. This dissertation addresses the challenging problem of how GPUs can be shared predictably and efficiently for real-time autonomous-driving systems. We tackle this challenge in four steps. First, we investigate NVIDIA GPUs with respect to scheduling, synchronization, and execution. We conduct an extensive set of experiments to infer NVIDIA GPU scheduling rules, which are unfortunately undisclosed by NVIDIA and are beyond access owing to their closed-source software stack. We also expose a list of pitfalls pertaining to CPU-GPU synchronization that can result in unbounded response times of GPU-using applications. Lastly, we examine a fundamental trade-off for designing real-time tasks under different execution options. Overall, our investigation provides an essential understanding of NVIDIA GPUs, allowing us to further model and analyze GPU tasks. Second, we develop a new model and conduct schedulability analysis for GPU tasks. We extend the well-studied sporadic task model with additional parameters that characterize the parallel execution of GPU tasks. We show that NVIDIA scheduling rules are subject to fundamental capacity loss, which implies a necessary total utilization bound. We derive response-time bounds for GPU task systems that satisfy our schedulability conditions. Third, we address an industrial challenge of supplying the throughput performance of computer-vision frameworks to support adequate coverage and redundancy offered by an array of cameras. We re-think the design of convolution neural network (CNN) software to better utilize hardware resources and achieve increased throughput (number of simultaneous camera streams) without any appreciable increase in per-frame latency (camera to CNN output) or reduction of per-stream accuracy. Fourth, we apply our analysis to a finer-grained graph scheduling of a computer-vision standard, OpenVX, which explicitly targets embedded and real-time systems.     Vector extensions in COTS processors to increase guaranteed performance in real-time systems

    The need for increased application performance in high-integrity systems like those in avionics is on the rise as software continues to implement more complex functionalities. The prevalent computing solution for future high-integrity embedded products are multi-processors systems-on-chip (MPSoC) processors. MPSoCs include CPU multicores that enable improving performance via thread-level parallelism. MPSoCs also include generic accelerators (GPUs) and application-specific accelerators. However, the data processing approach (DPA) required to exploit each of these underlying parallel hardware blocks carries several open challenges to enable the safe deployment in high-integrity domains. The main challenges include the qualification of its associated runtime system and the difficulties in analyzing programs deploying the DPA with out-of-the-box timing analysis and code coverage tools. In this work, we perform a thorough analysis of vector extensions (VExt) in current COTS processors for high-integrity systems. We show that VExt prevent many of the challenges arising with parallel programming models and GPUs. Unlike other DPAs, VExt require no runtime support, prevent by design race conditions that might arise with parallel programming models, and have minimum impact on the software ecosystem enabling the use of existing code coverage and timing analysis tools. We develop vectorized versions of neural network kernels and show that the NVIDIA Xavier VExt provide a reasonable increase in guaranteed application performance of up to 2.7x.
