    Design Methods for Interactive TV : two empirical studies

    The central question for this paper is how to improve the production process by closing the gap between industrial designers and software engineers of television(TV)-based User Interfaces (UI) in an industrial environment. Software engineers are highly interested whether one UI design can be converted into several fully functional UIs for TV products with different screen properties. The aim of the software engineers is to apply automatic layout and scaling in order to speed up and improve the production process. However, the question is whether a UI design lends itself for such automatic layout and scaling. This is investigated by analysing a prototype UI design done by industrial designers. In a first requirements study, industrial designers had created meta annotations on top of their UI design in order to disclose their design rationale for discussions with software engineers. In a second study, industrial designers assessed the potential of four different meta annotation approaches. The question was which annotation method industrial designers would prefer and whether it could satisfy the technical requirements of the software engineering process. One main result is that the industrial designers preferred the method they were already familiar with, which therefore seems to be the most effective one although the main objective of automatic layout and scaling could still not be achieved

    While end users could easily share and tag the multimedia resources online, the searching and reusing of the inside content of multimedia, such as a certain area within an image or a ten minutes segment within a one-hour video, is still difficult. Linked data is a promising way to interlink media fragments with other resources. Many applications in Web 2.0 have generated large amount of external annotations linked to media fragments. In this paper, we use Synote as the target application to discuss how media fragments could be published together with external annotations following linked data principles. Our design solves the dereferencing, describing and interlinking methods problems in interlinking multimedia. We also implement a model to let Google index media fragments which improves media fragments' online presence. The evaluation shows that our design can successfully publish media fragments and annotations for both semantic Web agents and traditional search engines.     Examining the contributions of automatic speech transcriptions and metadata sources for searching spontaneous conversational speech

    The searching spontaneous speech can be enhanced by combining automatic speech transcriptions with semantically related metadata. An important question is what can be expected from search of such transcriptions and different sources of related metadata in terms of retrieval effectiveness. The Cross-Language Speech Retrieval (CL-SR) track at recent CLEF workshops provides a spontaneous speech test collection with manual and automatically derived metadata fields. Using this collection we investigate the comparative search effectiveness of individual fields comprising automated transcriptions and the available metadata. A further important question is how transcriptions and metadata should be combined for the greatest benefit to search accuracy. We compare simple field merging of individual fields with the extended BM25 model for weighted field combination (BM25F). Results indicate that BM25F can produce improved search accuracy, but that it is currently important to set its parameters suitably using a suitable training set

    NeuralStory: an Interactive Multimedia System for Video Indexing and Re-use

    In the last years video has been swamping the Internet: websites, social networks, and business multimedia systems are adopting video as the most important form of communication and information. Video are normally accessed as a whole and are not indexed in the visual content. Thus, they are often uploaded as short, manually cut clips with user-provided annotations, keywords and tags for retrieval. In this paper, we propose a prototype multimedia system which addresses these two limitations: it overcomes the need of human intervention in the video setting, thanks to fully deep learning-based solutions, and decomposes the storytelling structure of the video into coherent parts. These parts can be shots, key-frames, scenes and semantically related stories, and are exploited to provide an automatic annotation of the visual content, so that parts of video can be easily retrieved. This also allows a principled re-use of the video itself: users of the platform can indeed produce new storytelling by means of multi-modal presentations, add text and other media, and propose a different visual organization of the content. We present the overall solution, and some experiments on the re-use capability of our platform in edutainment by conducting an extensive user valuation %with students from primary schools

    Using term clouds to represent segment-level semantic content of podcasts

    Spoken audio, like any time-continuous medium, is notoriously difficult to browse or skim without support of an interface providing semantically annotated jump points to signal the user where to listen in. Creation of time-aligned metadata by human annotators is prohibitively expensive, motivating the investigation of representations of segment-level semantic content based on transcripts generated by automatic speech recognition (ASR). This paper examines the feasibility of using term clouds to provide users with a structured representation of the semantic content of podcast episodes. Podcast episodes are visualized as a series of sub-episode segments, each represented by a term cloud derived from a transcript generated by automatic speech recognition (ASR). Quality of segment-level term clouds is measured quantitatively and their utility is investigated using a small-scale user study based on human labeled segment boundaries. Since the segment-level clouds generated from ASR-transcripts prove useful, we examine an adaptation of text tiling techniques to speech in order to be able to generate segments as part of a completely automated indexing and structuring system for browsing of spoken audio. Results demonstrate that the segments generated are comparable with human selected segment boundaries

From the past few years, it also became an attractive research area in visual computing. From the computational point of view, by far speech and text have been the most considered cues of information for analyzing personality. However, recently there has been an increasing interest from the computer vision community in analyzing personality from visual data. Recent computer vision approaches are able to accurately analyze human faces, body postures and behaviors, and use these information to infer apparent personality traits. Because of the overwhelming research interest in this topic, and of the potential impact that this sort of methods could have in society, we present in this paper an up-to-date review of existing vision-based approaches for apparent personality trait recognition. We describe seminal and cutting edge works on the subject, discussing and comparing their distinctive features and limitations. Future venues of research in the field are identified and discussed.     WonderFlow: Narration-Centric Design of Animated Data Videos

    Creating an animated data video enriched with audio narration takes a significant amount of time and effort and requires expertise. Users not only need to design complex animations, but also turn written text scripts into audio narrations and synchronize visual changes with the narrations. This paper presents WonderFlow, an interactive authoring tool, that facilitates narration-centric design of animated data videos. WonderFlow allows authors to easily specify a semantic link between text and the corresponding chart elements. Then it automatically generates audio narration by leveraging text-to-speech techniques and aligns the narration with an animation. WonderFlow provides a visualization structure-aware animation library designed to ease chart animation creation, enabling authors to apply pre-designed animation effects to common visualization components. It also allows authors to preview and iteratively refine their data videos in a unified system, without having to switch between different creation tools. To evaluate WonderFlow's effectiveness and usability, we created an example gallery and conducted a user study and expert interviews.     DocMIR: An automatic document-based indexing system for meeting retrieval

    This paper describes the DocMIR system which captures, analyzes and indexes automatically meetings, conferences, lectures, etc. by taking advantage of the documents projected (e.g. slideshows, budget tables, figures, etc.) during the events. For instance, the system can automatically apply the above-mentioned procedures to a lecture and automatically index the event according to the presented slides and their contents. For indexing, the system requires neither specific software installed on the presenter's computer nor any conscious intervention of the speaker throughout the presentation. The only material required by the system is the electronic presentation file of the speaker. Even if not provided, the system would temporally segment the presentation and offer a simple storyboard-like browsing interface. The system runs on several capture boxes connected to cameras and microphones that records events, synchronously. Once the recording is over, indexing is automatically performed by analyzing the content of the captured video containing projected documents and detects the scene changes, identifies the documents, computes their duration and extracts their textual content. Each of the captured images is identified from a repository containing all original electronic documents, captured audio-visual data and metadata created during post-production. The identification is based on documents' signatures, which hierarchically structure features from both layout structure and color distributions of the document images. Video segments are finally enriched with textual content of the identified original documents, which further facilitate the query and retrieval without using OCR. The signature-based indexing method proposed in this article is robust and works with low-resolution images and can be applied to several other applications including real-time document recognition, multimedia IR and augmented reality system
