Designing Interfaces with Social Presence: Using Vividness and Extraversion to Create Social Recommendation Agents

    Get PDF
Interfaces now employ a variety of media-rich, social, and advanced decision-making components, including recommendation agents (RA) designed to assist users with their tasks. Social presence has been identified as a key consideration in website design to overcome the lack of warmth, social cues, and face-to-face interaction, but few studies have investigated the interface features that may increase social presence. Recent research on RAs has similarly acknowledged social presence as a key factor in the design of online RAs and in building trust in this technology, but there has been limited empirical work on the topic. In this study an experiment was conducted to explore how social technology cues, media capabilities, and individual differences influence social presence and trust in an RA. RA personality (extraversion), vividness (text, voice, and animation), and computer playfulness were found to influence social presence, with social presence serving in a mediating role and increasing user trust in the RA. Vividness also had a moderating effect on the relationship between RA extraversion and social presence such that increased levels of vividness strengthen this relationship

STARPAHC systems report. Volume 2: Operational performance

    Get PDF
The Space Technology Applied to Rural Papago Advanced Health Care (STARPAHC) demonstrated the value and potential of telemedicine using physician's assistants for providing quality health care delivery to people in a remote area. Generally, the program's achievements were to: (1) establish the feasibility of the STARPAHC concept in the delivery of health care; (2) gain information for developing health care systems for future manned spacecraft; (3) determine the constraints and capabilities involved in the interaction between physicians and non-physician health care personnel; (4) determine effectiveness of the STARPAHC technique; and (5) define the additional developments that are needed and/or most valuable to improving telemedicine and its exportable potential

A network transparent, retained mode multimedia processing framework for the Linux operating system environment

    Get PDF

Utilizing DSP for IP telephony applications in mobile terminals

In this thesis, an optimal software architecture is studied and defined for enabling a real-time speech coding scheme in an Internet telephony application of a mobile terminal. According to a requirement set for the architecture, a phone call and the related real-time speech coding shall not limit or overload other functionality of the terminal. The mobile terminal utilized in this thesis provides a potential to take advantage of the efficiency of a dual core processor. One of the processors is designed for general purpose operating systems, and the other one for signal processing operations. The designed software architecture combines the functionality of these processors and enables real-time speech coding (both playback and capture) in the device. The architecture was implemented and its performance was evaluated with different measurements and parameters. It was observed that the implementation outperforms the requirements set. It was also confirmed that the performance of the general purpose processor is inadequate for real-time operations with the chosen speech coder/decoder. Two patent applications were filed by the author during the writing of this thesis

The purpose of this paper is to identify the main opportunities and limitations of corporate social responsibility (CSR). The survey was defined with the aim to involve the highest possible number of relevant CSR topics and give the issue a more wholesome perspective. It provides a basis for further comprehension and deeper analyses of specific CSR areas. The conditions determining the success of CSR in Romania have been defined in the paper on the basis of the previously cumulative knowledge as well as the results of various researches. This paper provides knowledge which may be useful in the programs promoting CSR.Corporate social responsibility, Supportive policies, Romania
