Multivariate pattern analysis of input and output representations of speech
Repeating a word or nonword requires a speaker to map auditory representations of incoming sounds onto learned speech items, maintain those items in short-term memory, interface that representation with the motor output system, and articulate the target sounds. This dissertation seeks to clarify the nature and neuroanatomical localization of speech sound representations in perception and production through multivariate analysis of neuroimaging data.
The major portion of this dissertation describes two experiments using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure responses to the perception and overt production of syllables and multivariate pattern analysis to localize brain areas containing associated phonological/phonetic information. The first experiment used a delayed repetition task to permit response estimation for auditory syllable presentation (input) and overt production (output) in individual trials. In input responses, clusters sensitive to vowel identity were found in left inferior frontal sulcus (IFs), while clusters responsive to syllable identity were found in left ventral premotor cortex and left mid superior temporal sulcus (STs). Output-linked responses revealed clusters of vowel information bilaterally in mid/posterior STs.
The second experiment was designed to dissociate the phonological content of the auditory stimulus and vocal target. Subjects were visually presented with two (non)word syllables simultaneously, then aurally presented with one of the syllables. A visual cue informed subjects either to repeat the heard syllable (repeat trials) or produce the unheard, visually presented syllable (change trials). Results suggest both IFs and STs represent heard syllables; on change trials, representations in frontal areas, but not STs, are updated to reflect the vocal target.
Vowel identity covaries with formant frequencies, inviting the question of whether lower-level, auditory representations can support vowel classification in fMRI. The final portion of this work describes a simulation study, in which artificial fMRI datasets were constructed to mimic the overall design of Experiment 1 with voxels assumed to contain either discrete (categorical) or analog (frequency-based) vowel representations. The accuracy of classification models was characterized by type of representation and the density and strength of responsive voxels. It was shown that classification is more sensitive to sparse, discrete representations than dense analog representations
A ciência da leitura e a produção acadêmica: caminhos trilhados
Linguistics focuses on the different phenomena of language. In macrolinguistics areas, there
is Psycholinguistics. This subfield researches (de)coding processes of messages with verbal
codes. Thus, one of its influential fields of activity is reading. Reading is one of the most
complex information processing tasks. It begins with the graphemes decoding and it finishes
with the text comprehension. Regarding the assessment of reading, there are several exams
and large-scale tests, such as Pisa, Saeb (Aneb and Anresc/Prova Brasil), ENEM. Alarming
statistics come with the indicators from these evaluative instruments. There are, among
Brazilians, low levels of reading comprehension and marked functional illiteracy rate.
Therefore, this study aimed to research what scientific communication has shared in terms of
knowledge about reading. Specifically, the objectives were synthesize, considering the
psycholinguistic approach of reading research, studies and research with the most recurrent
theme in the reading field evidenced from the electronic communication, in order to
investigate the dimensions and limitations of knowledge about this subject. For this, through
WebQualis system, Qualis A1 and A2 scientific journals with electronic format and with
focuses/scopes related to reading from the areas of (1) Language Arts/Linguistics, (2)
Psychology and (3) Education were selected. With the selected journals and through Capes
Journals Portal, all their volumes and issues from 2011 to 2015 were analyzed. With this,
scientific articles related to reading were mapped. With the mapped articles abstracts, the
recurrent themes in reading in the scientific production were observed. Finally, with the full
articles that had the recurrent theme, the researches results were integrated, synthesizing and
pondering about them. With a critical-reflexive assessment of the data, relevant information
was found. First, on one hand, it was noted that the reading has achieved a stable and upward
space through the electronic communication. On the other one, it was checked that the
contributions of Psychology have a great influence in reading and comprehension research.
Second, it was shown that the most frequent theme in electronic productions is
comprehension. Finally, with the synthesis, it was found that, increasingly, comprehension
topics related to reading neurobiological aspects were empirical and directly investigated. In
addition, there are several studies that propose reading teaching methods as well as strategies
for improving the comprehension, including the use of TICs. Moreover, it was found that
many research results are limited. This is because the comprehension involves several
components – cognitive processes and skills. Researches often focus attention on one or the
other component of it only, and each research fixes a specific methodology design and that
vary considerabably. Regarding the assessment of reading, many of the methodological
apparatus tasks evaluate only the product of comprehension and not its process. In other
words, built mental representations are evaluated and not how the encoding of this text
occurred. Therefore, in short, both the researches advancement in the comprehension field and
several limitations were observed.
processos cognitivos e habilidades.
Intentionality, Modularity and Time
The scope of this thesis is to provide an explanation of psychological time which adheres to the concept of modularity of cognitive functions as formulated by Fodor. This account seeks to demonstrate that our ‘sense’ of time (and the related ability to manage time information) is the cognitive result of a series of processes carried out by two independent and neutrally isolable processing components which are part of the portion of mental architecture dedicated to modular systems. I try to demonstrate that these sub-systems can themselves be referred to as modules, as each has the potential to specialize in time processing. Within this functional architecture delimitations between these different processing methods are organised according to principles which have their basis in Fodor's modularity thesis. Using the reference of 'module' for the notion of specious present my argument proceeds to arrange time processing into a hierarchy, in order to represent time information from the early stages of perception to higher stages of cognition. If such a hypothesis is correct, it could offer useful guidelines for exploring timing ability in humans, and provide a plausible framework for future investigation of the psychological and neuronal mechanisms of time processing
This work presents the creation and the study of a projective test of story completion: “Once upon a time... Adults”. Psychological functioning combines both conscious/rational and unconscious/emotional processes. In order to understand the latter, projective tests are commonly used, which often raise problems of scoring and interpretation. The structure and inner functioning of the present test minimizes those difficulties. The projective situation “Once upon a time... Adults” is identical to the “Once upon a time...” structure (Fagulha, 1992) that is used with children. The stimulus cards present the beginning of a story about a character (female/male) in three cartoon vignettes. The story is supposed to be completed by choosing and organizing a sequence of three out of the nine scenes available for each card. The story thus organized is then verbalized. The chosen scenes and the organized sequence are objective aspects for the scoring. The functioning of the test favours the creation of a transitional space (Winnicott, 1971/1975), which enhances the emotional elaboration of desires, anxieties and defenses. The test aims to evaluate relational representations: relationship with others and with the self. These two dimensions, in their positive and negative aspects, are the bases of the relational categories represented in the scenes corresponding to each card. Once the material of the test was created, including a response analysis grid, it was undertaken by a sample constituted by 160 adults, 80 men and 80 women, who also answered three questionnaires: NEO-FFI (Magalhães et al., 2012), CES-D (Gonçalves & Fagulha, 2003) and QER (Moreira, 2000). The responses provided by this sample constitute the first normative database. An inter-rater precision study was also conducted, with a degree of agreement obtained that ranged from very good to moderate. The relationship between the test and the answers to the questionnaires was also analyzed, yielding statistically significant results in the expected direction, which attests the validity of the test.
