Measuring Information Security Awareness Efforts in Social Networking Sites – A Proactive Approach

    Get PDF
For Social Network Sites to determine the effectiveness of their Information Security Awareness (ISA) techniques, many measurement and evaluation techniques are now in place to ensure controls are working as intended. While these techniques are inexpensive, they are all incident- driven as they are based on the occurrence of incident(s). Additionally, they do not present a true reflection of ISA since cyber-incidents are hardly reported. They are therefore adjudged to be post-mortem and risk permissive, the limitations that are inacceptable in industries where incident tolerance level is low. This paper aims at employing a non-incident statistic approach to measure ISA efforts. Using an object- oriented programming approach, PhP is employed as the coding language with MySQL database engine at the back-end to develop sOcialistOnline – a Social Network Sites (SNS) fully secured with multiple ISA techniques. Rather than evaluating the effectiveness of ISA efforts by success of attacks or occurrence of an event, password scanning is implemented to proactively measure the effects of ISA techniques in sOcialistOnline. Thus, measurement of ISA efforts is shifted from detective and corrective to preventive and anticipatory paradigms which are the best forms of information security approach

    Get PDF
We analyze a dataset of 51 current (2019-2020) Distributed Systems syllabi from top Computer Science programs, focusing on finding the prevalence and context in which topics related to performance are being taught in these courses. We also study the scale of the infrastructure mentioned in DS courses, from small client-server systems to cloud-scale, peer-to-peer, global-scale systems. We make eight main findings, covering goals such as performance, and scalability and its variant elasticity; activities such as performance benchmarking and monitoring; eight selected performance-enhancing techniques (replication, caching, sharding, load balancing, scheduling, streaming, migrating, and offloading); and control issues such as trade-offs that include performance and performance variability.Comment: Accepted for publication at WEPPE 2021, to be held in conjunction with ACM/SPEC ICPE 2021: https://doi.org/10.1145/3447545.3451197 This article is a follow-up of our prior ACM SIGCSE publication, arXiv:2012.0055

    Get PDF
In this paper, we make a deep search of the available tools in the market, at the current state of the art of Sentiment Analysis. Our aim is to optimize the human response in Datacenter Operations, using a combination of research tools, that allow us to decrease human error in general operations, managing Complex Infrastructures. The use of Sentiment Analysis tools is the first step for extending our capabilities for optimizing the human interface. Using different data collections from a variety of data sources, our research provides a very interesting outcome. In our final testing, we have found that the three main commercial platforms (IBM Watson, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure) get the same accuracy (89-90%). for the different datasets tested, based on Artificial Neural Network and Deep Learning techniques. The other stand-alone Applications or APIs, like Vader or MeaninCloud, get a similar accuracy level in some of the datasets, using a different approach, semantic Networks, such as Concepnet1, but the model can easily be optimized above 90% of accuracy, just adjusting some parameter of the semantic model. This paper points to future directions for optimizing DataCenter Operations Management and decreasing human error in complex environments

Cloud composition technologies in multimodal composition program documents

Writing programs at numerous universities—including the Georgia Institute of Technology, Iowa State University, Miami University of Ohio, Virginia Tech, and Purdue University—are incorporating more learning about multimodal communication into their curricula, including written, oral, visual, and electronic communication (WOVE). Within WOVE, electronic technologies enable students to produce, distribute, and consume written, visual, oral, and electronic communication (Ong 1982; Bush 1945; Eisenstein 1979, Lauer 2009, 2014). Integrating cloud technologies into writing programs may be difficult because it requires ongoing training, support, and maintenance, but it may be worthwhile because it helps produce a writing culture mediated by these technologies. I use activity theory (Kaptelinin & Nardi 2006, Russell 1997) to argue that participant techne—as the knowledge of an art with a focus on the method of production—is an influential component of cloud-supported composition culture. And I demonstrate how cloud technologies may be written into course overview documents with modularity and social information

Nowadays Cloud computing has emerged as one of the most promising computer paradigms. The idea of selling software as a service has promoted IT enterprises to bet for this new paradigm. Cloud computing aims to power the next generation data centers not only offering software as a service but virtual services like hardware, data storage capacity or application logic. The increasing use of Cloud-based applications will also increase the power dedicated to the data centers that support this Clouds. Research in Cloud computing requires solutions that have to be tested in real environments. It is difficult and expensive to set up suitable test-beds for large scale cluster applications. Simulation can fulfill the needs that we find in Cloud computing experimentation. A large data center simulator can save lots of time and effort in Cloud investigation. This project presents the design and development process of some extensions to an existing virtualized data center simulator for Cloud computing research. It is able to reproduce the behaviour of a real Cloud framework and the information that it offers of the execution makes it suitable for testing and investigation purposes. The final idea of this project was to extend the heterogeneity of the tests that can be run by the simulator to use it as a test-bed for machine learning experimentation

Analyzing Methods and Opportunities in Software-Defined (SDN) Networks for Data Traffic Optimizations

    Get PDF
Computer networks are dynamic and require constant updating and monitoring of operations to meet the growing volume of data trafficked. This generates a number of cost issues as well as performance management and tuning to deliver granular quality of service (QoS), balancing data load, and controlling the occurrence of bottlenecks. As an alternative, a new programmable network paradigm has been used under the name of Software Defined Networks (SDN). The SDN consists of decoupling the data plane and controlling the network, where a programmable controller is responsible for managing rules for routing the data to various devices. Thus, the hardware that remains in the network data stream simply addresses the routing of the packets quickly according to these rules. In this context, this article conducts a study on different methods and approaches that are being used in the literature to solve problems in the optimization of data traffic in the network through the use of SDN. In particular, this study differs from other reviews of SDN because it focuses on issues such as QoS, load balancing, and congestion control. Finally, in addition to the review of the SDN's state-of-the-art in the areas mentioned, a survey of future challenges and research opportunities in the area is also presented. load balancing and congestion control.
