    AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF A LOW REYNOLDS NUMBER SWIMMER

    This work was motivated by the goal of building a robot capable of swimming on a microscopic scale by changing its shape. Two approaches to low Reynolds number swimming are studied. A deformable sphere is investigated which uses a method of construction called tensegrity to allow changes in shape. We found a method of matching tensegrity spheres to desired shapes and investigated the use of shape memory alloy coils as tensile elements. We propose a model for a box-shaped deformable swimmer, and a prototype is built and tested. The negative results from the prototype tests are then investigated by measuring the drag forces caused by pushing different block sizes through high viscosity fluid. Based on our experimental results we validate our approach and recommend design modifications for a second generation robot

    The wake dynamics and flight forces of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster

    We have used flow visualizations and instantaneous force measurements of tethered fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) to study the dynamics of force generation during flight. During each complete stroke cycle, the flies generate one single vortex loop consisting of vorticity shed during the downstroke and ventral flip. This gross pattern of wake structure in Drosophila is similar to those described for hovering birds and some other insects. The wake structure differed from those previously described, however, in that the vortex filaments shed during ventral stroke reversal did not fuse to complete a circular ring, but rather attached temporarily to the body to complete an inverted heart-shaped vortex loop. The attached ventral filaments of the loop subsequently slide along the length of the body and eventually fuse at the tip of the abdomen. We found no evidence for the shedding of wing-tip vorticity during the upstroke, and argue that this is due to an extreme form of the Wagner effect acting at that time. The flow visualizations predicted that maximum flight forces would be generated during the downstroke and ventral reversal, with little or no force generated during the upstroke. The instantaneous force measurements using laser-interferometry verified the periodic nature of force generation. Within each stroke cycle, there was one plateau of high force generation followed by a period of low force, which roughly correlated with the upstroke and downstroke periods. However, the fluctuations in force lagged behind their expected occurrence within the wing-stroke cycle by approximately 1 ms or one-fifth of the complete stroke cycle. This temporal discrepancy exceeds the range of expected inaccuracies and artifacts in the measurements, and we tentatively discuss the potential retarding effects within the underlying fluid mechanics

    Infusing Kirigami Principles Into Design of Mechanical Properties

    The emergence of mechanical metamaterials — which derive their properties primarily from the underlying architecture rather than the constituent material — has unleashed a new era of material design and functionalities. To fully materialize the promising potentials of metamaterials, it is crucial to develop versatile, scalable, and easy-to-fabricate methods that can both generate and tailor the underlying periodic architecture. To this end, we propose the use of kirigami — a popular recreational art of cutting and manipulating paper — as a platform to create periodicity and super-stretchability. Kirigami has become a design and fabrication framework for constructing metamaterials, robotic tools, and mechanical devices of vastly different sizes. In this dissertation, our target is to study the mechanical behavior --- mostly in the field of dynamics and kinematics--- of kirigami metamaterials and establish a framework for future studies. For the first time, our study focuses on wave propagation in a buckled kirigami sheet with uniformly distributed parallel cuts.When we apply an in-plane stretching force that exceeds a critical threshold, this kirigami sheet buckles and generates an out-of-plane periodic deformation pattern that can change the propagation direction of passing waves. That is, waves entering the buckled Kirigami unit cells through its longitudinal direction can turn to the out-of-plane direction. As a result, the stretched kirigami sheet shows wave propagation bandgaps in specific frequency ranges. We have two approaches toward manipulating the bandgap, 1) Tuning the bandgap by controlling the stretching displacement to change the distribution of cross-section of area and distribution of moment of inertia inside of the periodic unit cell of kirigami metamaterial and 2) programming stretched kirigami material by intentionally sequencing its constitutive mechanical bits. Such sequencing exploits the multi-stable nature of the stretched-buckled kirigami, which allows each mechanical bit to settle into two stable equilibria with different shapes (aka. “0” and “1” states). Therefore, by designing the sequence of 0 and 1 bits, one can fundamentally change the underlying periodicity of the kirigami and thus program the phononic bandgap frequencies. To this end, our study develops an algorithm to identify the unique periodicities using “n-strings” consisting of n mechanical bits

    Keystroke and Touch-dynamics Based Authentication for Desktop and Mobile Devices

    The most commonly used system on desktop computers is a simple username and password approach which assumes that only genuine users know their own credentials. Once broken, the system will accept every authentication trial using compromised credentials until the breach is detected. Mobile devices, such as smart phones and tablets, have seen an explosive increase for personal computing and internet browsing. While the primary mode of interaction in such devices is through their touch screen via gestures, the authentication procedures have been inherited from keyboard-based computers, e.g. a Personal Identification Number, or a gesture based password, etc.;This work provides contributions to advance two types of behavioral biometrics applicable to desktop and mobile computers: keystroke dynamics and touch dynamics. Keystroke dynamics relies upon the manner of typing rather than what is typed to authenticate users. Similarly, a continual touch based authentication that actively authenticates the user is a more natural alternative for mobile devices.;Within the keystroke dynamics domain, habituation refers to the evolution of user typing pattern over time. This work details the significant impact of habituation on user behavior. It offers empirical evidence of the significant impact on authentication systems attempting to identify a genuine user affected by habituation, and the effect of habituation on similarities between users and impostors. It also proposes a novel effective feature for the keystroke dynamics domain called event sequences. We show empirically that unlike features from traditional keystroke dynamics literature, event sequences are independent of typing speed. This provides a unique advantage in distinguishing between users when typing complex text.;With respect to touch dynamics, an immense variety of mobile devices are available for consumers, differing in size, aspect ratio, operating systems, hardware and software specifications to name a few. An effective touch based authentication system must be able to work with one user model across a spectrum of devices and user postures. This work uses a locally collected dataset to provide empirical evidence of the significant effect of posture, device size and manufacturer on user authentication performance. Based on the results of this strand of research, we suggest strategies to improve the performance of continual touch based authentication systems

    Engineering data compendium. Human perception and performance. User's guide

    The concept underlying the Engineering Data Compendium was the product of a research and development program (Integrated Perceptual Information for Designers project) aimed at facilitating the application of basic research findings in human performance to the design and military crew systems. The principal objective was to develop a workable strategy for: (1) identifying and distilling information of potential value to system design from the existing research literature, and (2) presenting this technical information in a way that would aid its accessibility, interpretability, and applicability by systems designers. The present four volumes of the Engineering Data Compendium represent the first implementation of this strategy. This is the first volume, the User's Guide, containing a description of the program and instructions for its use
