Digitalization is revolutionizing the way business is conducted within industrial value chains through the use of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, intensive data exchange and predictive analytics. However, technological application on its own is not enough; profiting from digitalization requires business model innovation such as making the transition to advanced service business models. Yet, many research gaps remain in analyzing how industrial companies can leverage digitalization to transform their business models to achieve sustainability benefits. Specifically, challenges related to value creation, value delivery, and value capture components of business model innovation need further understanding as well as how alignment of these components drive sustainable industry initiatives. Thus, this special issue editorial attempts to take stock of the emerging research field through a literature review and providing a synthesis of special issue contributions. In doing so, we contribute by developing a framework that communicates and sets the direction for future research by linking digitalization, business model innovation, and sustainability in industrial settings.fi=vertaisarvioimaton|en=nonPeerReviewed

Smart City Digital Transformation Across Organisational Boundaries: A Resource Orchestration perspective

    Get PDF
Smart City initiatives are gaining popularity, but their Digital Transformation (DT) process remains unclear. This paper investigates the DT process in Smart Cities through an empirical case study involving multiple government councils. We examine how stakeholders coordinate resources across organizational boundaries throughout the process. The paper presents a resource rationalization process model that promotes resourcefulness by enabling organizations to problematize, solve, and activate their resources. We provide insights into how councils shape resources, deploy common IoT systems, and transition from problem-solving to activation, despite differing short-term objectives. Resourcefulness is achieved theoretically by reshaping and reorganizing shared resources. Practically, this study offers practitioners guidance on restructuring, bundling, and leveraging resources to attain positive outcomes from DT, even with diverse objectives

Digital technology often destroys value. What happens is, for some companies to become market winners and for others, digital technology turns to be the reason of their failure. There is one clear winner coming out from this battle: consumers. Traditional insurance business model seemed resilient from digital technology. However, this resilience is not lasting forever. Actually, it is now starting to collapse. Digital is transforming the way products and services are served to the customers and also the underlying business models. Big data and analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), Automated Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are just some of the forces analyzed in this research that are disrupting the traditional insurance market and that are slowly shaping a new competition landscape with the emergence of Ecosystems. This new market situation can turn to be a great opportunity for some insurance company, but as it will be explained in this thesis, the success will not be evenly shared. What will make the difference is the speed and decisive motivation at which incumbents will embrace and actuate the change

The rapid and pervasive digitalization of businesses has spawned value creation by changing the nature and structure of products and services. At the same time, organizations have been challenged to cope with dynamic business landscapes as they apply digital technologies to renew their competitive positions. In this context, we aim to explore how organizations develop digital innovation initiatives to transform a traditional product-dominant business towards a service-dominant one and how the initiatives are constituted and entangled within and across the initiative stages. Based on close collaboration with Georgia-Pacific Consumer Products Professional Division (GP PRO), we explore the path trajectory of the organization’s strategic connected restroom initiative through four stages: (idea-focus) initiation, (technology-focus) experimentation, (customer-focus) commercialization, and (process-focus) organization. Drawing on a clinical inquiry approach, we investigate the digital innovation initiative as combinations of strategic moves (co-evolution, reconfiguration, and renewal) and architectural moves (sensing usage, analyzing traces, and co-creating services). As a result, the dissertation contributes to the literature by adding new knowledge about the role of digital innovation in transforming incumbent product-oriented organizations towards a service-dominant focus as well as to practitioners by providing insights into the key challenges and opportunities they encounter in such initiatives
