    Decomposability of Tensors

    Tensor decomposition is a relevant topic, both for theoretical and applied mathematics, due to its interdisciplinary nature, which ranges from multilinear algebra and algebraic geometry to numerical analysis, algebraic statistics, quantum physics, signal processing, artificial intelligence, etc. The starting point behind the study of a decomposition relies on the idea that knowledge of elementary components of a tensor is fundamental to implement procedures that are able to understand and efficiently handle the information that a tensor encodes. Recent advances were obtained with a systematic application of geometric methods: secant varieties, symmetries of special decompositions, and an analysis of the geometry of finite sets. Thanks to new applications of theoretic results, criteria for understanding when a given decomposition is minimal or unique have been introduced or significantly improved. New types of decompositions, whose elementary blocks can be chosen in a range of different possible models (e.g., Chow decompositions or mixed decompositions), are now systematically studied and produce deeper insights into this topic. The aim of this Special Issue is to collect papers that illustrate some directions in which recent researches move, as well as to provide a wide overview of several new approaches to the problem of tensor decomposition

    Computational Design of Cold Bent Glass Fa\c{c}ades

    Cold bent glass is a promising and cost-efficient method for realizing doubly curved glass fa\c{c}ades. They are produced by attaching planar glass sheets to curved frames and require keeping the occurring stress within safe limits. However, it is very challenging to navigate the design space of cold bent glass panels due to the fragility of the material, which impedes the form-finding for practically feasible and aesthetically pleasing cold bent glass fa\c{c}ades. We propose an interactive, data-driven approach for designing cold bent glass fa\c{c}ades that can be seamlessly integrated into a typical architectural design pipeline. Our method allows non-expert users to interactively edit a parametric surface while providing real-time feedback on the deformed shape and maximum stress of cold bent glass panels. Designs are automatically refined to minimize several fairness criteria while maximal stresses are kept within glass limits. We achieve interactive frame rates by using a differentiable Mixture Density Network trained from more than a million simulations. Given a curved boundary, our regression model is capable of handling multistable configurations and accurately predicting the equilibrium shape of the panel and its corresponding maximal stress. We show predictions are highly accurate and validate our results with a physical realization of a cold bent glass surface

    The shape of the PCA trajectories and the population neural coding of movement initiation in the basal ganglia

    In this work we study the shape of the neural trajectories obtained from Principal Components Analysis (PCA) of neural activity, related to movement initiation, in the basal ganglia of rats. We focus on the relation between global and local aspects of the shape, and on the population code by means of the ensemble structure. We find that the structure of the principal components is intimately related to the ensembles in the population which, in turn, drive the evolution of the neural trajectories. From this point of view, the coding schemes in the input and output stages of the basal ganglia differ, being the output lower dimensional than the input. In the output stage we can identify specific ensembles that explain the main features (sharp points, singular points, etc.) of the shape, revealing novel aspects of the computations performed by these regions during movement. Also, based upon new measures of heterogeneity and sparseness, we conclude that the output stages are homogeneous but dense while the input stages are more heterogeneous. This work also contains novel mathematical results in relation with the restrictions on the shape imposed by the PCA and the by structure of the data. A novel relationship between the principal components and Catalan objects is proved

    Articulating Space: Geometric Algebra for Parametric Design -- Symmetry, Kinematics, and Curvature

    To advance the use of geometric algebra in practice, we develop computational methods for parameterizing spatial structures with the conformal model. Three discrete parameterizations – symmetric, kinematic, and curvilinear – are employed to generate space groups, linkage mechanisms, and rationalized surfaces. In the process we illustrate techniques that directly benefit from the underlying mathematics, and demonstrate how they might be applied to various scenarios. Each technique engages the versor – as opposed to matrix – representation of transformations, which allows for structure-preserving operations on geometric primitives. This covariant methodology facilitates constructive design through geometric reasoning: incidence and movement are expressed in terms of spatial variables such as lines, circles and spheres. In addition to providing a toolset for generating forms and transformations in computer graphics, the resulting expressions could be used in the design and fabrication of machine parts, tensegrity systems, robot manipulators, deployable structures, and freeform architectures. Building upon existing algorithms, these methods participate in the advancement of geometric thinking, developing an intuitive spatial articulation that can be creatively applied across disciplines, ranging from time-based media to mechanical and structural engineering, or reformulated in higher dimensions

    Locally Adaptive Frames in the Roto-Translation Group and their Applications in Medical Imaging

    Locally adaptive differential frames (gauge frames) are a well-known effective tool in image analysis, used in differential invariants and PDE-flows. However, at complex structures such as crossings or junctions, these frames are not well-defined. Therefore, we generalize the notion of gauge frames on images to gauge frames on data representations U:Rd⋊Sd−1→RU:\mathbb{R}^{d} \rtimes S^{d-1} \to \mathbb{R} defined on the extended space of positions and orientations, which we relate to data on the roto-translation group SE(d)SE(d), d=2,3d=2,3. This allows to define multiple frames per position, one per orientation. We compute these frames via exponential curve fits in the extended data representations in SE(d)SE(d). These curve fits minimize first or second order variational problems which are solved by spectral decomposition of, respectively, a structure tensor or Hessian of data on SE(d)SE(d). We include these gauge frames in differential invariants and crossing preserving PDE-flows acting on extended data representation UU and we show their advantage compared to the standard left-invariant frame on SE(d)SE(d). Applications include crossing-preserving filtering and improved segmentations of the vascular tree in retinal images, and new 3D extensions of coherence-enhancing diffusion via invertible orientation scores
