    A Review on Wireless Power Transfer

    This paper is a review of the various designs put forward by various people regarding the Wireless Power Transfer (WPT). Here the designs have been discussed, along with the purpose that the design can be used for, the efficiency of the power produced and also the ways to improve the efficiency of the design. The values of various parameters and diagrams used are based on the experimental results of various researchers. Finally, a suitable conclusion has been drawn regarding the best design, which can be used for WPT taking into consideration the various associated factors that have been discussed here

    A Study of the Sensitivity of Energy Conversion Efficiency to Load Variation in Class-E Resonant Power Inverter

    In this thesis the sensitivity of energy conversion efficiency (ECE) and output power of a class-E resonant inverter under variable resistive and inductive load assignments is examined for wireless power transfer (WPT) applications. By performing simulation and mathematical analysis, it was found that the on-resistance of the switching device has minor effect on the design’s efficiency. Additional comparisons between the simulation and mathematical analysis show reasonable output power and ECE load variation performance for the design, but with unique load impedances where zero voltage switching (ZVS) and zero derivative switching (ZDS) are achieved. These comparisons also expose inaccurate mathematical assumptions. Experimental test results are presented to validate simulation and mathematical assumptions. These tests also show invalid assumptions used in the simulation and mathematical analysis and the performance of the class-E resonant power inverter suffer due to the difference in resonant frequencies during switch on and off state periods, nonlinear shunt capacitance, and parasitic impedances

    A GaN-Based Synchronous Rectifier with Reduced Voltage Distortion for 6.78 MHz Wireless Power Applications

    The call for a larger degree of engineering innovation grows as wireless power transfer increases in popularity. In this thesis, 6.78 MHz resonant wireless power transfer is explained. Challenges in WPT such as dynamic load variation and electromagnetic interference due to harmonic distortion are discussed, and a literature review is conducted to convey how the current state of the art is addressing these challenges.A GaN-based synchronous rectifier is proposed as a viable solution, and a model of the circuit is constructed. The precisely derived model is compared to a linearized model to illustrate the importance of exactness within the model derivation. The model is then used to quantify the design space of circuit parameters Lr and Cr with regard to harmonic distortion, input phase control, and efficiency. Practical design decisions concerning the 6.78 MHz system are explained. These include gate driver choice and mitigation of PCB parasitics. The model is verified with open loop experimentation using a linear power amplifier, FPGA, electronic load, and two function generators. Current zero-crossing sensing is then introduced in order to achieve self-regulation of both the switching frequency and input phase. The details of the FPGA code and sensing scheme used to obtain this closed loop functionality are described in detail. Finally, conclusions are drawn, and future work is identified

    GaN-Based High Efficiency Transmitter for Multiple-Receiver Wireless Power Transfer

    Wireless power transfer (WPT) has attracted great attention from industry and academia due to high charging flexibility. However, the efficiency of WPT is lower and the cost is higher than the wired power transfer approaches. Efforts including converter optimization, power delivery architecture improvement, and coils have been made to increase system efficiency.In this thesis, new power delivery architectures in the WPT of consumer electronics have been proposed to improve the overall system efficiency and increase the power density.First, a two-stage transmitter architecture is designed for a 100 W WPT system. After comparing with other topologies, the front-end ac-dc power factor correction (PFC) rectifier employs a totem-pole rectifier. A full bridge 6.78 MHz resonant inverter is designed for the subsequent stage. An impedance matching network provides constant transmitter coil current. The experimental results verify the high efficiency, high PF, and low total harmonic distortion (THD).Then, a single-stage transmitter is derived based on the verified two-stage structure. By integration of the PFC rectifier and full bridge inverter, two GaN FETs are saved and high efficiency is maintained. The integrated DCM operated PFC rectifier provides high PF and low THD. By adopting a control scheme, the transmitter coil current and power are regulated. A simple auxiliary circuit is employed to improve the light load efficiency. The experimental results verify the achievement of high efficiency.A closed-loop control scheme is implemented in the single-stage transmitter to supply multiple receivers simultaneously. With a controlled constant transmitter current, the system provides a smooth transition during dynamically load change. ZVS detection circuit is proposed to protect the transmitter from continuous hard switching operation. The control scheme is verified in the experiments.The multiple-reciever WPT system with the single-stage transmitter is investigated. The system operating range is discussed. The method of tracking optimum system efficiency is studied. The system control scheme and control procedure, targeting at providing a wide system operating range, robust operation and capability of tracking the optimized system efficiency, are proposed. Experiment results demonstrate the WPT system operation

    Ambient RF energy harvesting and efficient DC-load inductive power transfer

    This thesis analyses in detail the technology required for wireless power transfer via radio frequency (RF) ambient energy harvesting and an inductive power transfer system (IPT). Radio frequency harvesting circuits have been demonstrated for more than fifty years, but only a few have been able to harvest energy from freely available ambient (i.e. non-dedicated) RF sources. To explore the potential for ambient RF energy harvesting, a city-wide RF spectral survey was undertaken in London. Using the results from this survey, various harvesters were designed to cover four frequency bands from the largest RF contributors within the ultra-high frequency (0.3 to 3 GHz) part of the frequency spectrum. Prototypes were designed, fabricated and tested for each band and proved that approximately half of the London Underground stations were found to be suitable locations for harvesting ambient RF energy using the prototypes. Inductive Power Transfer systems for transmitting tens to hundreds of watts have been reported for almost a decade. Most of the work has concentrated on the optimization of the link efficiency and have not taken into account the efficiency of the driver and rectifier. Class-E amplifiers and rectifiers have been identified as ideal drivers for IPT applications, but their power handling capability at tens of MHz has been a crucial limiting factor, since the load and inductor characteristics are set by the requirements of the resonant inductive system. The frequency limitation of the driver restricts the unloaded Q-factor of the coils and thus the link efficiency. The system presented in this work alleviates the use of heavy and expensive field-shaping techniques by presenting an efficient IPT system capable of transmitting energy with high dc-to-load efficiencies at 6 MHz across a distance of 30 cm.Open Acces

    Communication‐less Synchronous Rectification for In Motion Wireless Charging

    This thesis puts forward a control scheme to allow for synchronous rectification for dynamic wireless power transfer. The automotive industry is transitioning away from internal combustion engines (ICEs) and towards electric vehicles (EVs). This transition is spurred by the environmental and economic benefits EVs offer over ICEs. However, further improvements can still be made to how electric vehicles operate. One of these improvements is the technology of in motion wireless charging or dynamic wireless power transfer. In motion wireless charging offers the ability to remove existing range anxiety concerns for EVs. It also offers the potential for a reduction in battery sizes for EVs, which are the primary cost of EVs, this in turn decreases the total costs of mass EV adoption. Traditional implementations of in motion wireless charging utilize passive rectification to simplify controls between embedded primary pads and the vehicle. However, this solution while effective, limits the potential benefits of wireless charging. The use of synchronous or active rectification techniques, offer improved performance, control techniques, and bidirectional capabilities. However, the reason synchronous rectification is not already used in in motion charging is the complexity of synchronization over wireless communication. To move past this challenge, this thesis investigates a synchronization scheme that can be achieved without communication by taking advantage of induced free resonant currents in the vehicle’s tuning network to synchronize the switching transitions to receive power. In this thesis a traditional in motion wireless charging system utilizing passive rectification is designed and built as a benchmark for dynamic charging. Simulations of this control scheme are presented. Practical considerations are addressed for hardware realization. Finally, the control approach is validated through hardware in static and dynamic applications

    Modeling and Control of a 7-Level Switched Capacitor Rectifier for Wireless Power Transfer Systems

    Wireless power continues to increase in popularity for consumer device charging. Rectifier characteristics like efficiency, compactness, impedance tunability, and harmonic content make the multi-level switched capacitor rectifier (MSC) an exceptional candidate for modern WPT systems. The MSC shares the voltage conversion characteristics of a post-rectification buck-boost topology, reduces waveform distortion via its multi-level modulation scheme, demonstrates tank tunability via the phase control inherent to actively switched rectifiers, and accomplishes all this without a bulky filter inductor. In this work, the MSC WPT system operation is explained, and a loss model is constructed. A prototype system is used to validate the models, showing exceptional agreement with the predicted efficiencies. The modeled MSC efficiencies are between 96.1% and 98.0% over the experimental power range up to 20.0 W. Two significant control loops are required for the MSC to be implemented in a real system. First, the output power is regulated using the modulation of the rectifier\u27s input voltage. Second, the switching frequency of the rectifier must exactly match the WPT carrier frequency set by the inverter on the primary side. Here, a small signal discrete time model is used to construct four transfer functions relating to the output voltage. Then, four novel time-to-time transfer functions are built on top of the discrete time model to inform the frequency synchronization feedback loop. Both loops are tested and validated in isolation. Finally, the dual-loop control problem is defined, closed form equations that include loop interactions are derived, and stable wide-range dual-loop operation is demonstrated experimentally

    Design of Wireless Power Transfer and Data Telemetry System for Biomedical Applications

    With the advancement of biomedical instrumentation technologies sensor based remote healthcare monitoring system is gaining more attention day by day. In this system wearable and implantable sensors are placed outside or inside of the human body. Certain sensors are needed to be placed inside the human body to acquire the information on the vital physiological phenomena such as glucose, lactate, pH, oxygen, etc. These implantable sensors have associated circuits for sensor signal processing and data transmission. Powering the circuit is always a crucial design issue. Batteries cannot be used in implantable sensors which can come in contact with the blood resulting in serious health risks. An alternate approach is to supply power wirelessly for tether-less and battery- less operation of the circuits.Inductive power transfer is the most common method of wireless power transfer to the implantable sensors. For good inductive coupling, the inductors should have high inductance and high quality factor. But the physical dimensions of the implanted inductors cannot be large due to a number of biomedical constraints. Therefore, there is a need for small sized and high inductance, high quality factor inductors for implantable sensor applications. In this work, design of a multi-spiral solenoidal printed circuit board (PCB) inductor for biomedical application is presented. The targeted frequency for power transfer is 13.56 MHz which is within the license-free industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band. A figure of merit based optimization technique has been utilized to optimize the PCB inductors. Similar principal is applied to design on-chip inductor which could be a potential solution for further miniaturization of the implantable system. For layered human tissue the optimum frequency of power transfer is 1 GHz for smaller coil size. For this reason, design and optimization of multi-spiral solenoidal integrated inductors for 1 GHz frequency is proposed. Finally, it is demonstrated that the proposed inductors exhibit a better overall performance in comparison with the conventional inductors for biomedical applications
