    A Comparison of Fixed Threshold CFAR and CNN Ship Detection Methods for S-band NovaSAR Images

    NovaSAR is a commercial S-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) small satellite, built and operated by SSTL in the UK. One of its primary mission objectives is to carry out maritime surveillance and monitoring for security and defence applications. An investigation was carried out into comparing and contrasting conventional and new methods to perform automated ship detection in NovaSAR images. The outcome of this investigation could show the potential effectiveness of ship detection using spaceborne S-band SAR for Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA). The conventional approach is to apply a suitable distribution model to characterise sea surface clutter, followed by the implementation of a fixed threshold, Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) detection algorithm. In comparison, a RetinaNet-based convolutional neural network (CNN)solution was developed and trained on an open-source C-band dataset in order to determine the validity of applying non-native training data to S-band imagery. The detection performance was then compared with the CFAR technique, finding that for two selected test acquisitions a CNN-based ship detection algorithm was able to outperform a fixed threshold, CFAR-based method in the absence of native training data. CNN ship detection performance was further improved by applying transfer learning to a native S-band NovaSAR image dataset

    An Automatic Ship Detection Method Based on Local Gray-Level Gathering Characteristics in SAR Imagery

    This paper proposes an automatic ship detection method based on gray-level gathering characteristics of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. The method does not require any prior knowledge about ships and background observation. It uses a novel local gray-level gathering degree (LGGD) to characterize the spatial intensity distribution of SAR image, and then an adaptive-like LGGD thresholding and filtering scheme to detect ship targets. Experiments on real SAR images with varying sea clutter backgrounds and multiple targets situation have been conducted. The performance analysis confirms that the proposed method works well in various circumstances with high detection rate, fast detection speed and perfect shape preservation

    A Novel Variable Index and Excision CFAR Based Ship Detection Method on SAR Imagery

    When applying the constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detector to ship detection on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery, multiple interferers such as upwelling, breaking waves, ambiguities, and neighboring ships in a dense traffic area will degrade the probability of detection. In this paper, we propose a novel variable index and excision CFAR (VIE-CFAR) based ship detection method to alleviate the masking effect of multiple interferers. Firstly, we improve the variable index (VI) CFAR with an excision procedure, which censors the multiple interferers from the reference cells. And then, the paper integrates the novel CFAR concept into a ship detection scheme on SAR imagery, which adopts the VIE-CFAR to screen reference cells and the distribution to derive detection threshold. Finally, we analyze the performances of the VIE-CFAR under different environments and validate the proposed method on both ENVISAT and TerraSAR-X SAR data. The results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms other existing detectors, especially in the presence of multiple interferers

    CFAR Ship Detection in Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar Images Based on Whitening Filter

    Polarimetric whitening filter (PWF) can be used to filter polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) images to improve the contrast between ships and sea clutter background. For this reason, the output of the filter can be used to detect ships. This paper deals with the setting of the threshold over PolSAR images filtered by the PWF. Two parameter-constant false alarm rate (2P-CFAR) is a common detection method used on whitened polarimetric images. It assumes that the probability density function (PDF) of the filtered image intensity is characterized by a log-normal distribution. However, this assumption does not always hold. In this paper, we propose a systemic analytical framework for CFAR algorithms based on PWF or multi-look PWF (MPWF). The framework covers the entire log-cumulants space in terms of the textural distributions in the product model, including the constant, gamma, inverse gamma, Fisher, beta, inverse beta, and generalized gamma distributions (GΓDs). We derive the analytical forms of the PDF for each of the textural distributions and the probability of false alarm (PFA). Finally, the threshold is derived by fixing the false alarm rate (FAR). Experimental results using both the simulated and real data demonstrate that the derived expressions and CFAR algorithms are valid and robust

    Détection de bateaux dans les images de radar à ouverture synthétique

    Le but principal de cette thèse est de développer des algorithmes efficaces et de concevoir un système pour la détection de bateaux dans les images Radar à Ouverture Synthetique (ROS.) Dans notre cas, la détection de bateaux implique en premier lieu la détection de cibles de points dans les images ROS. Ensuite, la détection d'un bateau proprement dit dépend des propriétés physiques du bateau lui-même, tel que sa taille, sa forme, sa structure, son orientation relative a la direction de regard du radar et les conditions générales de l'état de la mer. Notre stratégie est de détecter toutes les cibles de bateaux possibles dans les images de ROS, et ensuite de chercher autour de chaque candidat des évidences telle que les sillons. Les objectifs de notre recherche sont (1) d'améliorer 1'estimation des paramètres dans Ie modèle de distribution-K et de déterminer les conditions dans lesquelles un modèle alternatif (Ie Gamma, par exemple) devrait être utilise plutôt; (2) d'explorer Ie modèle PNN (Probabilistic Neural Network) comme une alternative aux modèles paramétriques actuellement utilises; (3) de concevoir un modèle de regroupement flou (FC : Fuzzy Clustering) capable de détecter les petites et grandes cibles de bateaux dans les images a un seul canal ou les images a multi-canaux; (4) de combiner la détection de sillons avec la détection de cibles de bateaux; (5) de concevoir un modèle de détection qui peut être utilisé aussi pour la détection des cibles de bateaux en zones costières.Abstract: The main purpose of this thesis is to develop efficient algorithms and design a system for ship detection from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. Ship detection usually involves through detection of point targets on a radar clutter background.The detection of a ship depends on the physical properties of the ship itself, such as size, shape, and structure; its orientation relative to the radar look-direction; and the general condition of the sea state. Our strategy is to detect all possible ship targets in SAR images, and then search around each candidate for the wake as further evidence.The objectives of our research are (1) to improve estimation of the parameters in the K-distribution model and to determine the conditions in which an alternative model (Gamma, for example) should be used instead; (2) to explore a PNN (Probabilistic Neural Networks) model as an alternative to the commonly used parameteric models; (3) to design a FC (Fuzzy Clustering) model capable of detecting both small and large ship targets from single-channel images or multi-channel images; (4) to combine wake detection with ship target detection; (5) to design a detection model that can also be used to detect ship targets in coastal areas. We have developed algorithms for each of these objectives and integrated them into a system comprising six models.The system has been tested on a number of SAR images (SEASAT, ERS and RADARSAT-1, for example) and its performance has been assessed

    International audienceThis paper studies the performances of different ship detectors based on adaptive threshold algorithms. The detec- tion algorithms are based on various clutter distributions and assessed automatically with a systematic methodology. Evaluation using large datasets of medium resolution SAR images and AIS (Automatic Identification System) data as ground truths allows to evaluate the efficiency of each detector. Depending on the datasets used for testing, the detection algorithms offer different advantages and disadvantages. The systematic method used in discriminating real detected targets and false alarms in order to determine the detection rate, allows us to perform an appropriate and consistent comparison of the detectors. The impact of SAR sensors characteristics (incidence angle, polarization, frequency and spatial resolution) is fully assessed, the vessels' length being also considered. Experiments are conducted on Radarsat-2 and CosmoSkymed ScanSAR datasets and AIS data acquired by coastal stations

    Statistical tests for a ship detector based on the Polarimetric Notch Filter

    Ship detection is an important topic in remote sensing and Synthetic Aperture Radar has a valuable contribution, allowing detection at night time and with almost any weather conditions. Additionally, polarimetry can play a significant role considering its capability to discriminate between different targets. Recently, a new ship detector exploiting polarimetric information was developed, namely the Geometrical Perturbation Polarimetric Notch Filter (GP-PNF). This work is focused on devising two statistical tests for the GP-PNF. The latter allow an automatic and adaptive selection of the detector threshold. Initially, the probability density function (pdf) of the detector is analytically derived. Finally, the Neyman-Pearson (NP) lemma is exploited to set the threshold calculating probabilities using the clutter pdf (i.e. a Constant False Alarm Rate, CFAR) and a likelihood ratio (LR). The goodness of fit of the clutter pdf is tested with four real SAR datasets acquired by the RADARSAT-2 and the TanDEM-X satellites. The former images are quad-polarimetric, while the latter are dual-polarimetric HH/VV. The data are accompanied by the Automatic Identification System (AIS) location of vessels, which facilitates the validation of the detection masks. It can be observed that the pdf's fit the data histograms and they pass the two sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov and χ2 tests

    Automatic vessel monitoring with single and multidimensional SAR images in the wavelet domain

    Spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) techniques constitute an extremely promising alternative compared to traditional surveillance methods thanks to the all-weather and day-and-night capabilities of Radar linked with the large coverage of SAR images. Nowadays, the capabilities of satellite based SAR systems are confirmed by a wide amount of applications and experiments all over the world. Nevertheless, specific data exploitation methods are still to be developed to provide an efficient automatic interpretation of SAR data. The aim of this paper is to present an approach based on multiscale time–frequency analysis for the automatic detection of spots in a noisy background which is a critical matter in a number of SAR applications. The technique has been applied to automatic ship detection in single and multidimensional SAR imagery and it has proven to be a rapid, robust and reliable tool, able to manage complicated heterogeneous scenes where classical approaches may fail.Peer Reviewe

    A comparative study of operational vessel detectors for maritime surveillance using satellite-borne synthetic aperture radar

    This paper presents a comparative study among four operational detectors that work by automatically post-processing synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired from the satellite platforms RADARSAT-2 and COSMO-SkyMed. Challenging maritime scenarios have been chosen to assess the detectors' performance against features such as ambiguities, significant sea clutter, or irregular shorelines. The SAR images which form the test data are complemented with ground truth to define the reference detection configuration, which permits quantifying the probability of detection, the false alarm rate, and the accuracy of estimating ship dimensions. Although the results show that all the detectors perform well, there is no perfect detector, and a better detection system could be developed that combines the best elements from each of the single detectors. In addition to the comparison exercise, the study has facilitated the improvement of the detectors by highlighting weaknesses and providing means for fixing them.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
