Finite volume methods for unidirectional dispersive wave models
We extend the framework of the finite volume method to dispersive
unidirectional water wave propagation in one space dimension. In particular we
consider a KdV-BBM type equation. Explicit and IMEX Runge-Kutta type methods
are used for time discretizations. The fully discrete schemes are validated by
direct comparisons to analytic solutions. Invariants conservation properties
are also studied. Main applications include important nonlinear phenomena such
as dispersive shock wave formation, solitary waves and their various
interactions.Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures, 51 references. Other authors papers can be

Finite volume schemes for dispersive wave propagation and runup
Finite volume schemes are commonly used to construct approximate solutions to
conservation laws. In this study we extend the framework of the finite volume
methods to dispersive water wave models, in particular to Boussinesq type
systems. We focus mainly on the application of the method to bidirectional
nonlinear, dispersive wave propagation in one space dimension. Special emphasis
is given to important nonlinear phenomena such as solitary waves interactions,
dispersive shock wave formation and the runup of breaking and non-breaking long
waves.Comment: 41 pafes, 20 figures. Other author's papers can be downloaded at

Energy-conserving discontinuous Galerkin methods for the Vlasov-Amp\`{e}re system
In this paper, we propose energy-conserving numerical schemes for the
Vlasov-Amp\`{e}re (VA) systems. The VA system is a model used to describe the
evolution of probability density function of charged particles under self
consistent electric field in plasmas. It conserves many physical quantities,
including the total energy which is comprised of the kinetic and electric
energy. Unlike the total particle number conservation, the total energy
conservation is challenging to achieve. For simulations in longer time ranges,
negligence of this fact could cause unphysical results, such as plasma self
heating or cooling. In this paper, we develop the first Eulerian solvers that
can preserve fully discrete total energy conservation. The main components of
our solvers include explicit or implicit energy-conserving temporal
discretizations, an energy-conserving operator splitting for the VA equation
and discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods for the spatial
discretizations. We validate our schemes by rigorous derivations and benchmark
numerical examples such as Landau damping, two-stream instability and
bump-on-tail instability
A modified Galerkin/finite element method for the numerical solution of the Serre-Green-Naghdi system
A new modified Galerkin / Finite Element Method is proposed for the numerical
solution of the fully nonlinear shallow water wave equations. The new numerical
method allows the use of low-order Lagrange finite element spaces, despite the
fact that the system contains third order spatial partial derivatives for the
depth averaged velocity of the fluid. After studying the efficacy and the
conservation properties of the new numerical method, we proceed with the
validation of the new numerical model and boundary conditions by comparing the
numerical solutions with laboratory experiments and with available theoretical
asymptotic results
The design of conservative finite element discretisations for the vectorial modified KdV equation
We design a consistent Galerkin scheme for the approximation of the vectorial
modified Korteweg-de Vries equation. We demonstrate that the scheme conserves
energy up to machine precision. In this sense the method is consistent with the
energy balance of the continuous system. This energy balance ensures there is
no numerical dissipation allowing for extremely accurate long time simulations
free from numerical artifacts. Various numerical experiments are shown
demonstrating the asymptotic convergence of the method with respect to the
discretisation parameters. Some simulations are also presented that correctly
capture the unusual interactions between solitons in the vectorial setting
