E2XLRADR (Energy Efficient Cross Layer Routing Algorithm with Dynamic Retransmission for Wireless Sensor Networks)
The main focus of this article is to achieve prolonged network lifetime with
overall energy efficiency in wireless sensor networks through controlled
utilization of limited energy. Major percentage of energy in wireless sensor
network is consumed during routing from source to destination, retransmission
of data on packet loss. For improvement, cross layered algorithm is proposed
for routing and retransmission scheme. Simulation and results shows that this
approach can save the overall energy consumptio
Reliable machine-to-machine multicast services with multi-radio cooperative retransmissions
The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11036-015-0575-6The 3GPP is working towards the definition of service requirements and technical solutions to provide support for energy-efficient Machine Type Communications (MTC) in the forthcoming generations of cellular networks. One of the envisioned solutions consists in applying group management policies to clusters of devices in order to reduce control signaling and improve upon energy efficiency, e.g., multicast Over-The-Air (OTA) firmware updates. In this paper, a Multi-Radio Cooperative Retransmission Scheme is proposed to efficiently carry out multicast transmissions in MTC networks, reducing both control signaling and improving energy-efficiency. The proposal can be executed in networks composed by devices equipped with multiple radio interfaces which enable them to connect to both a cellular access network, e.g., LTE, and a short-range MTC area network, e.g., Low-Power Wi-Fi or ZigBee, as foreseen by the MTC architecture defined by ETSI. The main idea is to carry out retransmissions over the M2M area network upon error in the main cellular link. This yields a reduction in both the traffic load over the cellular link and the energy consumption of the devices. Computer-based simulations with ns-3 have been conducted to analyze the performance of the proposed scheme in terms of energy consumption and assess its superior performance compared to non-cooperative retransmission schemes, thus validating its suitability for energy-constrained MTC applications.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Network Coding with Limited Overhearing
The two key benefits of network coding are increased reliability and throughput. Most network coding approaches for wireless networks rely on overhearing neighboring transmissions. Overhearing in sensor networks, however, is not energy-efficient. In this paper, we extend GinMAC, a state-of-the-art MAC protocol, applying network coding with limited overhearing. Our approach reduces the delay allocating less retransmission slots. Our results show that network coding with limited overhearing reduces the power consumption of GinMAC while maintaining the desired level of reliability
Reliable routing scheme for indoor sensor networks
Indoor Wireless sensor networks require a highly dynamic, adaptive routing scheme to deal with the high rate of topology changes due to fading of indoor wireless channels. Besides that, energy consumption rate needs to be consistently distributed among sensor nodes and efficient utilization of battery power is essential. If only the link reliability metric is considered in the routing scheme, it may create long hops routes, and the high quality paths will be frequently used. This leads to shorter lifetime of such paths; thereby the entire network's lifetime will be significantly minimized. This paper briefly presents a reliable load-balanced routing (RLBR) scheme for indoor ad hoc wireless sensor networks, which integrates routing information from different layers. The proposed scheme aims to redistribute the relaying workload and the energy usage among relay sensor nodes to achieve balanced energy dissipation; thereby maximizing the functional network lifetime. RLBR scheme was tested and benchmarked against the TinyOS-2.x implementation of MintRoute on an indoor testbed comprising 20 Mica2 motes and low power listening (LPL) link layer provided by CC1000 radio. RLBR scheme consumes less energy for communications while reducing topology repair latency and achieves better connectivity and communication reliability in terms of end-to-end packets delivery performance
A RELIABLE ROUTING MECHANISM WITH ENERGY-EFFICIENT NODE SELECTION FOR DATA TRANSMISSION USING A GENETIC ALGORITHM IN WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORK
Energy-efficient and reliable data routing is critical in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) application scenarios. Due to oscillations in wireless links in adverse environmental conditions, sensed data may not be sent to a sink node. As a result of wireless connectivity fluctuations, packet loss may occur. However, retransmission-based approaches are used to improve reliable data delivery. These approaches need a high quantity of data transfers for reliable data collection. Energy usage and packet delivery delays increase as a result of an increase in data transmissions. An energy-efficient data collection approach based on a genetic algorithm has been suggested in this paper to determine the most energy-efficient and reliable data routing in wireless sensor networks. The proposed algorithm reduced the number of data transmissions, energy consumption, and delay in network packet delivery. However, increased network lifetime. Furthermore, simulation results demonstrated the efficacy of the proposed method, considering the parameters energy consumption, network lifetime, number of data transmissions, and average delivery delay
Markov Decision Processes with Applications in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of autonomous and resource-limited
devices. The devices cooperate to monitor one or more physical phenomena within
an area of interest. WSNs operate as stochastic systems because of randomness
in the monitored environments. For long service time and low maintenance cost,
WSNs require adaptive and robust methods to address data exchange, topology
formulation, resource and power optimization, sensing coverage and object
detection, and security challenges. In these problems, sensor nodes are to make
optimized decisions from a set of accessible strategies to achieve design
goals. This survey reviews numerous applications of the Markov decision process
(MDP) framework, a powerful decision-making tool to develop adaptive algorithms
and protocols for WSNs. Furthermore, various solution methods are discussed and
compared to serve as a guide for using MDPs in WSNs
A Hybrid Algorithm for Reliable and Energy-efficient Data Gathering in Wireless Sensor Networks
Reliability and energy efficiency are two important requirements of the data gathering process in wireless sensor networks. Accordingly, we propose a novel data gathering algorithm which meets these requirements. The proposed scheme categorizes the sensed data into valuable and normal data and handles each type of data based on its demands. The main requirement of valuable data is reliability. Thus, the adopted strategy to gather this type of data is to send several copies of data packets toward the sink. The rise of energy exhaustion in this scheme is tolerable. This is due to that, the valuable data is generated at a low rate. On the other hand, our main concern in gathering normal data is energy efficiency. As most of the sensed data is normal, an energy-efficient approach to gather normal data results in considerable energy conserving. Thus, we exploit clustering technique for normal data gathering. We also propose a lightweight intrusion detection system to detect malicious nodes. Simulation results and theoretical analysis confirm that our proposed algorithm provides reliability and energy efficiency at an acceptable level
An Adaptive Fault-Tolerant Communication Scheme for Body Sensor Networks
A high degree of reliability for critical data transmission is required in
body sensor networks (BSNs). However, BSNs are usually vulnerable to channel
impairments due to body fading effect and RF interference, which may
potentially cause data transmission to be unreliable. In this paper, an
adaptive and flexible fault-tolerant communication scheme for BSNs, namely
AFTCS, is proposed. AFTCS adopts a channel bandwidth reservation strategy to
provide reliable data transmission when channel impairments occur. In order to
fulfill the reliability requirements of critical sensors, fault-tolerant
priority and queue are employed to adaptively adjust the channel bandwidth
allocation. Simulation results show that AFTCS can alleviate the effect of
channel impairments, while yielding lower packet loss rate and latency for
critical sensors at runtime.Comment: 10 figures, 19 page
