    Power enhancement based link quality for wireless mesh network

    Energy consumption of wireless network communication is still a big issue and a lot of research papers have proposed many solutions to increase node life time. The WMN architecture is made up of a fixed and mobile component, whereas the wireless mesh networks (WMNs) are multi-hop wireless networks with instant deployment, self-healing, self-organization and self-configuration features. The reduction in the distance by a factor of two can result in at least four times more powerful signals at the receiver. This paper presents suggestions that the links are more reliable without the increase in power of the transmitter in individual nodes. As a result, the present simulations networks are nine mobile nodes for considering coverage issues of the service area. The analytic results show that the link power node for direct communication between two nodes with long distance consuming more power than it is cleared. The improvement in the network performance for maintaining is available and this solution can be used to implement mobility in such case with low power region for the wireless mesh networks

    Exploiting the power of multiplicity: a holistic survey of network-layer multipath

    The Internet is inherently a multipath network: For an underlying network with only a single path, connecting various nodes would have been debilitatingly fragile. Unfortunately, traditional Internet technologies have been designed around the restrictive assumption of a single working path between a source and a destination. The lack of native multipath support constrains network performance even as the underlying network is richly connected and has redundant multiple paths. Computer networks can exploit the power of multiplicity, through which a diverse collection of paths is resource pooled as a single resource, to unlock the inherent redundancy of the Internet. This opens up a new vista of opportunities, promising increased throughput (through concurrent usage of multiple paths) and increased reliability and fault tolerance (through the use of multiple paths in backup/redundant arrangements). There are many emerging trends in networking that signify that the Internet's future will be multipath, including the use of multipath technology in data center computing; the ready availability of multiple heterogeneous radio interfaces in wireless (such as Wi-Fi and cellular) in wireless devices; ubiquity of mobile devices that are multihomed with heterogeneous access networks; and the development and standardization of multipath transport protocols such as multipath TCP. The aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive survey of the literature on network-layer multipath solutions. We will present a detailed investigation of two important design issues, namely, the control plane problem of how to compute and select the routes and the data plane problem of how to split the flow on the computed paths. The main contribution of this paper is a systematic articulation of the main design issues in network-layer multipath routing along with a broad-ranging survey of the vast literature on network-layer multipathing. We also highlight open issues and identify directions for future work

    On-demand Multipath Routing Protocols for Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks: A Comparative Survey

    A Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is an infrastructure-less, self-organized and multi-hop network with a rapidly changing topology causing the wireless links to be broken at any time. Routing in such a network is challenging due to the mobility of its nodes and the challenge becomes more difficult when the network size increases. Due to the limited capacity of a multi-hop path and the high dynamics of wireless links, the single-path routing approach is unable to provide efficient high data rate transmission in MANETs. The multipath routing is the routing technique of using multiple alternative paths through a network. Furthermore, whenever a link failure is detected on a primary route, the source node can select the optimal route among multiple available routes. Therefore, the multipath routing approach is broadly utilized as one of the possible solutions to overcome the single-path limitation. Most of the multipath routing protocols are based on Ad Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector (AODV). The objective of this paper is to provide a survey and compare sets of multipath routing protocols for mobile ad-hoc networks. This survey will motivate the design of new multipath routing protocols, which overcome the weaknesses identified in this paper

    Enabling Parallel Wireless Communication in Mobile Robot Teams

    Wireless inter-robot communication enables robot teams to cooperatively solve complex problems that cannot be addressed by a single robot. Applications for cooperative robot teams include search and rescue, exploration and surveillance. Communication is one of the most important components in future autonomous robot systems and is essential for core functions such as inter-robot coordination, neighbour discovery and cooperative control algorithms. In environments where communication infrastructure does not exist, decentralised multi-hop networks can be constructed using only the radios on-board each robot. These are known as wireless mesh networks (WMNs). However existing WMNs have limited capacity to support even small robot teams. There is a need for WMNs where links act like dedicated point-to-point connections such as in wired networks. Addressing this problem requires a fundamentally new approach to WMN construction and this thesis is the first comprehensive study in the multi-robot literature to address these challenges. In this thesis, we propose a new class of communication systems called zero mutual interference (ZMI) networks that are able to emulate the point-to-point properties of a wired network over a WMN implementation. We instantiate the ZMI network using a multi-radio multi-channel architecture that autonomously adapts its topology and channel allocations such that all network edges communicate at the full capacity of the radio hardware. We implement the ZMI network on a 100-radio testbed with up to 20-individual nodes and verify its theoretical properties. Mobile robot experiments also demonstrate these properties are practically achievable. The results are an encouraging indication that the ZMI network approach can facilitate the communication demands of large cooperative robot teams deployed in practical problems such as data pipe-lining, decentralised optimisation, decentralised data fusion and sensor networks

    Multichannel Cross-Layer Routing for Sensor Networks

    Wireless Sensor Networks are ad-hoc networks that consist of sensor nodes that typically use low-power radios to connect to the Internet. The channels used by the low-power radio often suffer from interference from the other devices sharing the same frequency. By using multichannel communication in wireless networks, the effects of interference can be mitigated to enable the network to operate reliably. This thesis investigates an energy efficient multichannel protocol in Wireless Sensor Networks. It presents a new decentralised multichannel tree-building protocol with a centralised controller for ad-hoc sensor networks. The proposed protocol alleviates the effect of interference, which results in improved network efficiency, stability, and link reliability. The protocol detects the channels that suffer interference in real-time and switches the sensor nodes from those channels. It takes into account all available channels and aims to use the spectrum efficiently by transmitting on several channels. In addition to the use of multiple channels, the protocol reconstructs the topology based on the sensor nodesā€™ residual energy, which can prolong the network lifetime. The sensor nodesā€™ energy consumption is reduced because of the multichannel protocol. By using the lifetime energy spanning tree algorithm proposed in this thesis, energy consumption can be further improved by balancing the energy load in the network. This solution enables sensor nodes with less residual energy to remain functional in the network. The benefits of the proposed protocol are described in an extensive performance evaluation of different scenarios in this thesis

    Planning the deployment of fault-tolerant wireless sensor networks

    Since Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are subject to failures, fault-tolerance becomes an important requirement for many WSN applications. Fault-tolerance can be enabled in different areas of WSN design and operation, including the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer and the initial topology design. To be robust to failures, a MAC protocol must be able to adapt to traffic fluctuations and topology dynamics. We design ER-MAC that can switch from energy-efficient operation in normal monitoring to reliable and fast delivery for emergency monitoring, and vice versa. It also can prioritise high priority packets and guarantee fair packet deliveries from all sensor nodes. Topology design supports fault-tolerance by ensuring that there are alternative acceptable routes to data sinks when failures occur. We provide solutions for four topology planning problems: Additional Relay Placement (ARP), Additional Backup Placement (ABP), Multiple Sink Placement (MSP), and Multiple Sink and Relay Placement (MSRP). Our solutions use a local search technique based on Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedures (GRASP). GRASP-ARP deploys relays for (k,l)-sink-connectivity, where each sensor node must have k vertex-disjoint paths of length ā‰¤ l. To count how many disjoint paths a node has, we propose Counting-Paths. GRASP-ABP deploys fewer relays than GRASP-ARP by focusing only on the most important nodes ā€“ those whose failure has the worst effect. To identify such nodes, we define Length-constrained Connectivity and Rerouting Centrality (l-CRC). Greedy-MSP and GRASP-MSP place minimal cost sinks to ensure that each sensor node in the network is double-covered, i.e. has two length-bounded paths to two sinks. Greedy-MSRP and GRASP-MSRP deploy sinks and relays with minimal cost to make the network double-covered and non-critical, i.e. all sensor nodes must have length-bounded alternative paths to sinks when an arbitrary sensor node fails. We then evaluate the fault-tolerance of each topology in data gathering simulations using ER-MAC
