A hierarchical Mamdani-type fuzzy modelling approach with new training data selection and multi-objective optimisation mechanisms: A special application for the prediction of mechanical properties of alloy steels
In this paper, a systematic data-driven fuzzy modelling methodology is proposed, which allows to construct Mamdani fuzzy models considering both accuracy (precision) and transparency (interpretability) of fuzzy systems. The new methodology employs a fast hierarchical clustering algorithm to generate an initial fuzzy model efficiently; a training data selection mechanism is developed to identify appropriate and efficient data as learning samples; a high-performance Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) based multi-objective optimisation mechanism is developed to further improve the fuzzy model in terms of both the structure and the parameters; and a new tolerance analysis method is proposed to derive the confidence bands relating to the final elicited models. This proposed modelling approach is evaluated using two benchmark problems and is shown to outperform other modelling approaches. Furthermore, the proposed approach is successfully applied to complex high-dimensional modelling problems for manufacturing of alloy steels, using ârealâ industrial data. These problems concern the prediction of the mechanical properties of alloy steels by correlating them with the heat treatment process conditions as well as the weight percentages of the chemical compositions
An artificial immune systems based predictive modelling approach for the multi-objective elicitation of Mamdani fuzzy rules: a special application to modelling alloys
In this paper, a systematic multi-objective Mamdani fuzzy modeling approach is proposed, which can be viewed as an extended version of the previously proposed Singleton fuzzy modeling paradigm. A set of new back-error propagation (BEP) updating formulas are derived so that they can replace the old set developed in the singleton version. With the substitution, the extension to the multi-objective Mamdani Fuzzy Rule-Based Systems (FRBS) is almost endemic. Due to the carefully chosen output membership functions, the inference and the defuzzification methods, a closed form integral can be deducted for the defuzzification method, which ensures the efficiency of the developed Mamdani FRBS. Some important factors, such as the variable length coding scheme and the rule alignment, are also discussed. Experimental results for a real data set from the steel industry suggest that the proposed approach is capable of eliciting not only accurate but also transparent FRBS with good generalization ability
Optimization of Evolutionary Neural Networks Using Hybrid Learning Algorithms
Evolutionary artificial neural networks (EANNs) refer to a special class of
artificial neural networks (ANNs) in which evolution is another fundamental
form of adaptation in addition to learning. Evolutionary algorithms are used to
adapt the connection weights, network architecture and learning algorithms
according to the problem environment. Even though evolutionary algorithms are
well known as efficient global search algorithms, very often they miss the best
local solutions in the complex solution space. In this paper, we propose a
hybrid meta-heuristic learning approach combining evolutionary learning and
local search methods (using 1st and 2nd order error information) to improve the
learning and faster convergence obtained using a direct evolutionary approach.
The proposed technique is tested on three different chaotic time series and the
test results are compared with some popular neuro-fuzzy systems and a recently
developed cutting angle method of global optimization. Empirical results reveal
that the proposed technique is efficient in spite of the computational
complexity
A survey of fuzzy control for stabilized platforms
This paper focusses on the application of fuzzy control techniques (fuzzy
type-1 and type-2) and their hybrid forms (Hybrid adaptive fuzzy controller and
fuzzy-PID controller) in the area of stabilized platforms. It represents an
attempt to cover the basic principles and concepts of fuzzy control in
stabilization and position control, with an outline of a number of recent
applications used in advanced control of stabilized platform. Overall, in this
survey we will make some comparisons with the classical control techniques such
us PID control to demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of the
application of fuzzy control techniques
Model fusion using fuzzy aggregation: Special applications to metal properties
To improve the modelling performance, one should either propose a new modelling methodology or make the best of existing models. In this paper, the study is concentrated on the latter solution, where a structure-free modelling paradigm is proposed. It does not rely on a fixed structure and can combine various modelling techniques in âsymbiosisâ using a âmaster fuzzy systemâ. This approach is shown to be able to include the advantages of different modelling techniques altogether by requiring less training and by minimising the efforts relating optimisation of the final structure. The proposed approach is then successfully applied to the industrial problems of predicting machining induced residual stresses for aerospace alloy components as well as modelling the mechanical properties of heat-treated alloy steels, both representing complex, non-linear and multi-dimensional environments
Comparison of different strategies of utilizing fuzzy clustering in structure identification
Fuzzy systems approximate highly nonlinear systems by means of fuzzy "if-then"
rules. In the literature, various algorithms are proposed for mining. These algorithms commonly utilize fuzzy clustering in structure identification. Basically, there are three different approaches in which one can utilize fuzzy clustering; the ïżœfirst one is based on input space clustering, the second one considers clustering realized in the output space, while the third one is concerned with clustering realized in the combined input-output space. In this study, we analyze these three approaches. We discuss each of the algorithms in great detail and o€er a thorough comparative analysis. Finally, we compare the performances of these algorithms in a medical diagnosis classiïżœcation problem, namely Aachen Aphasia Test. The experiment and the results provide a valuable insight about the merits and the shortcomings of these three clustering approaches
Application of a Mamdani-type fuzzy rule-based system to segment periventricular cerebral veins in susceptibility-weighted images
This paper presents an algorithm designed to segment veins in the periventricular region of the brain in susceptibility-weighted magnetic resonance images. The proposed algorithm is based on a Mamdani-type fuzzy rule-based system that enables enhancement of veins within periventricular regions of interest as the first step. Segmentation is achieved after determining the cut-off value providing the best trade-off between sensitivity and specificity to establish the suitability of each pixel to belong to a cerebral vein. Performance of the algorithm in
susceptibility-weighted images acquired in healthy volunteers showed very good segmentation, with a small number of false positives. The results were not affected by small changes in the size and location of the regions of interest. The
algorithm also enabled detection of differences in the visibility of periventricular veins between healthy subjects and multiple sclerosis patients. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.Postprint (author's final draft
Fuzzy local linear approximation-based sequential design
When approximating complex high-fidelity black box simulators with surrogate models, the experimental design is often created sequentially. LOLA-Voronoi, a powerful state of the art method for sequential design combines an Exploitation and Exploration algorithm and adapts the sampling distribution to provide extra samples in non-linear regions. The LOLA algorithm estimates gradients to identify interesting regions, but has a bad complexity which results in long computation time when simulators are high-dimensional. In this paper, a new gradient estimation approach for the LOLA algorithm is proposed based on Fuzzy Logic. Experiments show the new method is a lot faster and results in experimental designs of comparable quality
