SSR Markers in the Genus <em>Pistacia</em>

Simple sequence repeats (SSRs) are one of the most powerful molecular marker systems due to abundance in the genomes, its codominant nature, and high repeatability. P. vera L. is cultivated species in the genus Pistacia due to commercial value of its edible nuts. Other species in the genus are in the wild and are important especially for rootstock sources as well as for ornamental and forest trees. There were a very limited number of SSR markers for Pistacia species until several years ago; however, next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology has allowed to develop plenty of SSRs since 2016 in the genus. There are currently about 1500 published SSR markers developed from cultivated P. vera. There are also several studies generating SSR loci from wild Pistacia species. In a conclusion, there are currently an adequate number of SSR markers for cultivated pistachio and that can be used in wild Pistacia species due to their high level of transferability rate between Pistacia species. These SSRs can be used for assaying diversity in natural populations, marker discovery, germplasm characterization, parental identification, genetic linkage mapping, and evolutionary studies in the genus Pistacia

Sanata yeni oryantalist yaklaşım, batılı küratör ve eleştirmenlerin sanatçıların çalışmalarındaki rolü ve bu yaklaşımın neden desteklendiği açıklanmıştır. Bu sebeple, uluslararası sergiler ile eleştirmen ve sanat tarihçilerinin görüşlerinden örnekler verilmiştir. Kültürel emperyalizm, ötekileştirme gibi sosyal ve politik meselelerin periferi sanatçılarının güncel çalışmalarına etkisi bu metinde önemli bir yere sahiptir

The Role of Drawing and Art Classes in The Graphic Design Education

This study aims to analyse the role and importance of the Arts relevant courses, concentrating on Drawing lessons, in the light of evolving technology and new expectations in the Graphic Design education era. First, the article briefly focuses on the relationship between art and design area. Then, the topics such as the possible contributions of art and drawing classes in education and the link between art, culture and a good design are covered. In the next section, the old fashioned Graphic Design education methods and new approaches are compared. The relation between creativity and knowledge, necessity of hand drawing while creating designs and the question about the competency of computer design programmes are discussed. The discussion is exemplified through comparison of Graphic Design curriculums from different higher education institutions. Another important question attempted to answer here is, to what extent the computer programmes an instrument of abstract design or the execution process are. The expectations and demands of the students are examined in context of previous discussions. The final objective of the paper is to show that manuel drawing skills and art culture knowledge are still valuable achievements for a graphic design student. Therefore, the work ends with thoughts about convincing them to notice and properly learn these skills

Design: New Art?

Sanatın sonuna dair tartışmalar dünyada uzunca bir zamandır sürüp gidiyor. Sanatın gerekliliği ve geleceği belki de tüm tarihi boyunca hiç bu denli sorgulanmamıştı. Diğer yandan da hayatın her alanında tasarım çok önemli bir hale gelmiş durumda. Bir zamanlar sadece ayrıcalıklı zümreler özel tasarım ürünlerine sahip olabiliyorken, artık her gelir seviyesi ve zevke yönelik tasarımlar yapılmakta. Teknolojik ürünler değişik firmalar tarafından aşağı-yukarı benzer özelliklere sahip olarak piyasa sürülüyor. Görsel tasarımları onları birbirinden farklılaştıran ve tercih sebebi haline getiren özelliklerinden biri haline geldi. Günümüzde tasarım ürünlerinin çok etkileyici bir görsellikle sunulduğunu kabul etmemiz gerekir. Bu durum zaman zaman onlara birer sanat objesi gibi davranılmasına dahi yol açmakta. Peki, günlük kullanıma yönelik, işlevsel bir tasarım ürününün estetik açıdan etkileyiciliği onu bir sanat nesnesi haline getirmeye yeterli midir? Görsel sanatlar arenasında ise işlerin çoğunlukla reklam estetiğinde, grafiksel anlatımın ağırlıkta olduğu bir dille seyirciye sunulduğunu görüyoruz. Bu durumda sanat hala “sanat” sayılabilir mi? Bu bildiride sanat ve tasarım arasındaki bulanıklaşan sınırlar irdelenerek, çağdaş sanatla tasarımın (ya da sanatçıyla tasarımcının) hangi noktalarda buluştuğu ya da ayrıştığı; sanatın ve insanlığın sanata duyduğu ihtiyacın varlığını sürdürüp sürdürmediği incelenecektir. Tarih boyunca sanatın motivasyonları ve içeriği kısaca açıklandıktan sonra, “sanatın sonundan sonra” sanatın geldiği nokta ve çağımızda tasarım alanlarının sanatın yerini alıp alamayacağı sorularına yanıt aranacaktır

Phytochemicals in Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are the most important sources of phytochemicals. Phytochemicals use for both human diets and natural antimicrobial agents in food preservation. Their benefits for health are mainly due to high antioxidant activity. Antimicrobials of plant origin are known as secondary metabolites that could play a role not only individually or jointly against food‐borne pathogens but also contribute to food flavor. Phytochemicals have a strong effect on control and prevention of natural spoilage processes and growth of microorganisms, including pathogens causing food safety issues. Microorganisms are always associated with harvested plants and slaughtered animals, the basic unprocessed materials of the food industry. Since foods consumed by humans undergo several processing treatments, it is important to understand the effect of such treatments on the phytochemical composition of foods
