    Noise Detection Pattern Recognition in a Univariate Time Series Case

    The goal of this project is to find a specific time series pattern in diverse univariate time series data. The data comes from memory reports of computing servers. These reports show the amount of memory that is in use in the servers, as well as the total memory available. The specific pattern that was required to find was noise, which consists of periods of time in which there are high fluctuations of in-use memory. The algorithms that detect these patterns have been manually developed from scratch, due to the diverse nature of the data with which more control was needed. Some of the developed algorithms are a custom peak and valley detector, a noisy segment calculator by two different methodologies (which will be compared), and a daily seasonality detector. In the results, we get all the systems with noise of the customer, a score of noisiness of each one, and a ranked list of those from the noisiest to the least noisy. An analysis of the two or three noisiest cases is performed, depending on the methodology used. Additionally, a deployment of part of the work is done on a tool to assess its feasibility. This proof of concept will potentially allow deploying all current and future developments on this tool

    Arabic Isolated Word Speaker Dependent Recognition System

    In this thesis we designed a new Arabic isolated word speaker dependent recognition system based on a combination of several features extraction and classifications techniques. Where, the system combines the methods outputs using a voting rule. The system is implemented with a graphic user interface under Matlab using G62 Core I3/2.26 Ghz processor laptop. The dataset used in this system include 40 Arabic words recorded in a calm environment with 5 different speakers using laptop microphone. Each speaker will read each word 8 times. 5 of them are used in training and the remaining are used in the test phase. First in the preprocessing step we used an endpoint detection technique based on energy and zero crossing rates to identify the start and the end of each word and remove silences then we used a discrete wavelet transform to remove noise from signal. In order to accelerate the system and reduce the execution time we make the system first to recognize the speaker and load only the reference model of that user. We compared 5 different methods which are pairwise Euclidean distance with MelFrequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC), Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) with Formants features, Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) with MFCC, MFCC+DTW and Itakura distance with Linear Predictive Coding features (LPC) and we got a recognition rate of 85.23%, 57% , 87%, 90%, 83% respectively. In order to improve the accuracy of the system, we tested several combinations of these 5 methods. We find that the best combination is MFCC | Euclidean + Formant | DTW + MFCC | DTW + LPC | Itakura with an accuracy of 94.39% but with large computation time of 2.9 seconds. In order to reduce the computation time of this hybrid, we compare several subcombination of it and find that the best performance in trade off computation time is by first combining MFCC | Euclidean + LPC | Itakura and only when the two methods do not match the system will add Formant | DTW + MFCC | DTW methods to the combination, where the average computation time is reduced to the half to 1.56 seconds and the system accuracy is improved to 94.56%. Finally, the proposed system is good and competitive compared with other previous researches

    Cooperative positioning studies based on WLANs

    Location information and location-based service have gained importance in recent years because, based on their concept, a new business market has been opened which encompass emergency services, security, monitoring, tracking, logistics, etc. Nowadays, the most developed positioning systems, namely the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), are meant for outdoor use. In order to integrate outdoor and indoor localization in the same mobile application, several lines of research have been created for the purpose of investigating the possibility of wireless network technologies and of overcoming the challenges faced by GNSS in performing localization and navigation in indoor environments. The benefit in using wireless networks is that they provide a minimally invasive solution which is based on software algorithms that can be implemented and executed in the Mobile Station (MS) or in a Location Server connected to the network. This thesis focuses on the development of localization approaches based on Received Signal Strength (RSS) and applied in WLANs. Such approaches demonstrated in recent research advances that RSS-based localization algorithms are the simplest existing approaches due to the fact that the RSSs are most accessible existing measurements. RSS measurements can be used with two main algorithms, which are addressed in this thesis: Fingerprinting method (FP) and Pathloss method (PL). These two methods can be applied in both cooperative and non-cooperative algorithms. Such algorithms are evaluated here in terms of Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) for both simulated and real-field data

    Vision Based Extraction of Nutrition Information from Skewed Nutrition Labels

    An important component of a healthy diet is the comprehension and retention of nutritional information and understanding of how different food items and nutritional constituents affect our bodies. In the U.S. and many other countries, nutritional information is primarily conveyed to consumers through nutrition labels (NLs) which can be found in all packaged food products. However, sometimes it becomes really challenging to utilize all this information available in these NLs even for consumers who are health conscious as they might not be familiar with nutritional terms or find it difficult to integrate nutritional data collection into their daily activities due to lack of time, motivation, or training. So it is essential to automate this data collection and interpretation process by integrating Computer Vision based algorithms to extract nutritional information from NLs because it improves the user’s ability to engage in continuous nutritional data collection and analysis. To make nutritional data collection more manageable and enjoyable for the users, we present a Proactive NUTrition Management System (PNUTS). PNUTS seeks to shift current research and clinical practices in nutrition management toward persuasion, automated nutritional information processing, and context-sensitive nutrition decision support. PNUTS consists of two modules, firstly a barcode scanning module which runs on smart phones and is capable of vision-based localization of One Dimensional (1D) Universal Product Code (UPC) and International Article Number (EAN) barcodes with relaxed pitch, roll, and yaw camera alignment constraints. The algorithm localizes barcodes in images by computing Dominant Orientations of Gradients (DOGs) of image segments and grouping smaller segments with similar DOGs into larger connected components. Connected components that pass given morphological criteria are marked as potential barcodes. The algorithm is implemented in a distributed, cloud-based system. The system’s front end is a smartphone application that runs on Android smartphones with Android 4.2 or higher. The system’s back end is deployed on a five node Linux cluster where images are processed. The algorithm was evaluated on a corpus of 7,545 images extracted from 506 videos of bags, bottles, boxes, and cans in a supermarket. The DOG algorithm was coupled to our in-place scanner for 1D UPC and EAN barcodes. The scanner receives from the DOG algorithm the rectangular planar dimensions of a connected component and the component’s dominant gradient orientation angle referred to as the skew angle. The scanner draws several scan lines at that skew angle within the component to recognize the barcode in place without any rotations. The scanner coupled to the localizer was tested on the same corpus of 7,545 images. Laboratory experiments indicate that the system can localize and scan barcodes of any orientation in the yaw plane, of up to 73.28 degrees in the pitch plane, and of up to 55.5 degrees in the roll plane. The videos have been made public for all interested research communities to replicate our findings or to use them in their own research. The front end Android application is available for free download at Google Play under the title of NutriGlass. This module is also coupled to a comprehensive NL database from which nutritional information can be retrieved on demand. Currently our NL database consists of more than 230,000 products. The second module of PNUTS is an algorithm whose objective is to determine the text skew angle of an NL image without constraining the angle’s magnitude. The horizontal, vertical, and diagonal matrices of the (Two Dimensional) 2D Haar Wavelet Transform are used to identify 2D points with significant intensity changes. The set of points is bounded with a minimum area rectangle whose rotation angle is the text’s skew. The algorithm’s performance is compared with the performance of five text skew detection algorithms on 1001 U.S. nutrition label images and 2200 single- and multi-column document images in multiple languages. To ensure the reproducibility of the reported results, the source code of the algorithm and the image data have been made publicly available.     Information overload in structured data

    Information overload refers to the difficulty of making decisions caused by too much information. In this dissertation, we address information overload problem in two separate structured domains, namely, graphs and text. Graph kernels have been proposed as an efficient and theoretically sound approach to compute graph similarity. They decompose graphs into certain sub-structures, such as subtrees, or subgraphs. However, existing graph kernels suffer from a few drawbacks. First, the dimension of the feature space associated with the kernel often grows exponentially as the complexity of sub-structures increase. One immediate consequence of this behavior is that small, non-informative, sub-structures occur more frequently and cause information overload. Second, as the number of features increase, we encounter sparsity: only a few informative sub-structures will co-occur in multiple graphs. In the first part of this dissertation, we propose to tackle the above problems by exploiting the dependency relationship among sub-structures. First, we propose a novel framework that learns the latent representations of sub-structures by leveraging recent advancements in deep learning. Second, we propose a general smoothing framework that takes structural similarity into account, inspired by state-of-the-art smoothing techniques used in natural language processing. Both the proposed frameworks are applicable to popular graph kernel families, and achieve significant performance improvements over state-of-the-art graph kernels. In the second part of this dissertation, we tackle information overload in text. We first focus on a popular social news aggregation website, Reddit, and design a submodular recommender system that tailors a personalized frontpage for individual users. Second, we propose a novel submodular framework to summarize videos, where both transcript and comments are available. Third, we demonstrate how to apply filtering techniques to select a small subset of informative features from virtual machine logs in order to predict resource usage
