    As Built Survey of road side features for 3D GIS application

    The objectives of this research is to develop and customize a traditional GIS, explore the options available for developing a 3D GIS and develop a web enabled 3D GIS. The research describes and compares the various data collection techniques that can be used to carry out As Built surveys for road and road side features. It also shows how to efficiently develop and customize a GIS. It shows the shortcomings of such a traditional GIS and the need to develop a more robust and powerful 3D GIS, which is not only 3D but also web enabled. This thesis contains six chapters. Chapter 1 discusses the research objectives. Chapter 2 discusses the various data collection techniques for carrying out As Built survey for Road Side features. Chapter 3 discusses the principles of a GIS and the various GIS software components available to carry out analyses. Chapter 4 describes the development of a customized GIS for As Built Surveys. Chapter 5 discusses the need to incorporate 3D features into the traditional GIS and it also looks at tools available to develop such a 3D GIS system. Chapter 6 draws conclusion on the work done and states recommendations to further improve the system

    Fast PRISM: Branch and Bound Hough Transform for Object Class Detection

    This paper addresses the task of efficient object class detection by means of the Hough transform. This approach has been made popular by the Implicit Shape Model (ISM) and has been adopted many times. Although ISM exhibits robust detection performance, its probabilistic formulation is unsatisfactory. The PRincipled Implicit Shape Model (PRISM) overcomes these problems by interpreting Hough voting as a dual implementation of linear sliding-window detection. It thereby gives a sound justification to the voting procedure and imposes minimal constraints. We demonstrate PRISM's flexibility by two complementary implementations: a generatively trained Gaussian Mixture Model as well as a discriminatively trained histogram approach. Both systems achieve state-of-the-art performance. Detections are found by gradient-based or branch and bound search, respectively. The latter greatly benefits from PRISM's feature-centric view. It thereby avoids the unfavourable memory trade-off and any on-line pre-processing of the original Efficient Subwindow Search (ESS). Moreover, our approach takes account of the features' scale value while ESS does not. Finally, we show how to avoid soft-matching and spatial pyramid descriptors during detection without losing their positive effect. This makes algorithms simpler and faster.     Anomaly detection and explanation in big data

    2021 Spring.Includes bibliographical references.Data quality tests are used to validate the data stored in databases and data warehouses, and to detect violations of syntactic and semantic constraints. Domain experts grapple with the issues related to the capturing of all the important constraints and checking that they are satisfied. The constraints are often identified in an ad hoc manner based on the knowledge of the application domain and the needs of the stakeholders. Constraints can exist over single or multiple attributes as well as records involving time series and sequences. The constraints involving multiple attributes can involve both linear and non-linear relationships among the attributes. We propose ADQuaTe as a data quality test framework that automatically (1) discovers different types of constraints from the data, (2) marks records that violate the constraints as suspicious, and (3) explains the violations. Domain knowledge is required to determine whether or not the suspicious records are actually faulty. The framework can incorporate feedback from domain experts to improve the accuracy of constraint discovery and anomaly detection. We instantiate ADQuaTe in two ways to detect anomalies in non-sequence and sequence data. The first instantiation (ADQuaTe2) uses an unsupervised approach called autoencoder for constraint discovery in non-sequence data. ADQuaTe2 is based on analyzing records in isolation to discover constraints among the attributes. We evaluate the effectiveness of ADQuaTe2 using real-world non-sequence datasets from the human health and plant diagnosis domains. We demonstrate that ADQuaTe2 can discover new constraints that were previously unspecified in existing data quality tests, and can report both previously detected and new faults in the data. We also use non-sequence datasets from the UCI repository to evaluate the improvement in the accuracy of ADQuaTe2 after incorporating ground truth knowledge and retraining the autoencoder model. The second instantiation (IDEAL) uses an unsupervised LSTM-autoencoder for constraint discovery in sequence data. IDEAL analyzes the correlations and dependencies among data records to discover constraints. We evaluate the effectiveness of IDEAL using datasets from Yahoo servers, NASA Shuttle, and Colorado State University Energy Institute. We demonstrate that IDEAL can detect previously known anomalies from these datasets. Using mutation analysis, we show that IDEAL can detect different types of injected faults. We also demonstrate that the accuracy of the approach improves after incorporating ground truth knowledge about the injected faults and retraining the LSTM-Autoencoder model. The novelty of this research lies in the development of a domain-independent framework that effectively and efficiently discovers different types of constraints from the data, detects and explains anomalous data, and minimizes false alarms through an interactive learning process

    TIME AND LOCATION FORENSICS FOR MULTIMEDIA

    In the modern era, a vast quantities of digital information is available in the form of audio, image, video, and other sensor recordings. These recordings may contain metadata describing important information such as the time and the location of recording. As the stored information can be easily modified using readily available digital editing software, determining the authenticity of a recording has utmost importance, especially for critical applications such as law enforcement, journalism, and national and business intelligence. In this dissertation, we study novel environmental signatures induced by power networks, which are known as Electrical Network Frequency (ENF) signals and become embedded in multimedia data at the time of recording. ENF fluctuates slightly over time from its nominal value of 50 Hz/60 Hz. The major trend of fluctuations in the ENF remains consistent across the entire power grid, including when measured at physically distant geographical locations. We investigate the use of ENF signals for a variety of applications such as estimation/verification of time and location of a recording's creation, and develop a theoretical foundation to support ENF based forensic analysis. In the first part of the dissertation, the presence of ENF signals in visual recordings captured in electric powered lighting environments is demonstrated. The source of ENF signals in visual recordings is shown to be the invisible flickering of indoor lighting sources such as fluorescent and incandescent lamps. The techniques to extract ENF signals from recordings demonstrate that a high correlation is observed between the ENF fluctuations obtained from indoor lighting and that from the power mains supply recorded at the same time. Applications of the ENF signal analysis to tampering detection of surveillance video recordings, and forensic binding of the audio and visual track of a video are also discussed. In the following part, an analytical model is developed to gain an understanding of the behavior of ENF signals. It is demonstrated that ENF signals can be modeled using a time-varying autoregressive process. The performance of the proposed model is evaluated for a timestamp verification application. Based on this model, an improved algorithm for ENF matching between a reference signal and a query signal is provided. It is shown that the proposed approach provides an improved matching performance as compared to the case when matching is performed directly on ENF signals. Another application of the proposed model in learning the power grid characteristics is also explicated. These characteristics are learnt by using the modeling parameters as features to train a classifier to determine the creation location of a recording among candidate grid-regions. The last part of the dissertation demonstrates that differences exist between ENF signals recorded in the same grid-region at the same time. These differences can be extracted using a suitable filter mechanism and follow a relationship with the distance between different locations. Based on this observation, two localization protocols are developed to identify the location of a recording within the same grid-region, using ENF signals captured at anchor locations. Localization accuracy of the proposed protocols are then compared. Challenges in using the proposed technique to estimate the creation location of multimedia recordings within the same grid, along with efficient and resilient trilateration strategies in the presence of outliers and malicious anchors, are also discussed

    Accelerating Globally Optimal Consensus Maximization in Geometric Vision

    Branch-and-bound-based consensus maximization stands out due to its important ability of retrieving the globally optimal solution to outlier-affected geometric problems. However, while the discovery of such solutions caries high scientific value, its application in practical scenarios is often prohibited by its computational complexity growing exponentially as a function of the dimensionality of the problem at hand. In this work, we convey a novel, general technique that allows us to branch over an n−1n-1 dimensional space for an n-dimensional problem. The remaining degree of freedom can be solved globally optimally within each bound calculation by applying the efficient interval stabbing technique. While each individual bound derivation is harder to compute owing to the additional need for solving a sorting problem, the reduced number of intervals and tighter bounds in practice lead to a significant reduction in the overall number of required iterations. Besides an abstract introduction of the approach, we present applications to three fundamental geometric computer vision problems: camera resectioning, relative camera pose estimation, and point set registration. Through our exhaustive tests, we demonstrate significant speed-up factors at times exceeding two orders of magnitude, thereby increasing the viability of globally optimal consensus maximizers in online application scenarios

    Generating Multiple User Interfaces for Multiple Application Domains

    This Ph.D. dissertation presents a classification scheme for User Interface Development Environments (UIDEs) based on the multiplicity of user interfaces and application domains that can be supported. The SISD, SIMD and MISD [S= Single, I= user Interface(s), M= Multiple, D= application Domain(s)] generator classes encompass most of the UIDEs described in the literature. A major goal of this research is to allow any user to develop a personalized interface for any interactive application, that is, the development of an MIMD UIDE. Fundamental to the development of such a UIDE is the complete separation of the user interface component from the application component. This separation necessitates devising less tightly coupled models of the application and user interface than have been reported to date. The main features of the MIMD UIDE model are as follows. [1] Interactive applications are modeled as editors providing a set of functions that manipulate 2-dimensional graphical objects. [2] Interactive data structures are introduced for maintaining and manipulating both the internal and external representation(s) of application information as a single unit. These external representations form the basis for presenting internal information to the user. [3] Since interaction with the user must be the sole responsibility of the user interface component, function interaction is modeled as follows. Application functions are modeled as a set of services. Each service processes a (set of) parameter(s) independently. For each service in the application, a corresponding service Interface object is defined in the user interface component. The service interface object interacts with the user to specify the required (set of) parameter(s), calls the associated service within the application, and displays the result of the service to the user. Using the above model, the user interface component is modeled to allow personalized specifications at all levels; including the internal entities of the interactive system, the characteristics of the display of information, and the interaction tasks, techniques and devices used for parameter specification
