    Service agents based collaborative workflow management implementation

    Workflow management systems in collaborative logistic companies require strong information systems to support in a distributed environment. These IT integration requirements have expanded considerably with the advent of collaborative e-business; utilizing B2B (Business to Business) and P2P (Partner to Partner) e-commerce. This paper deals with adaptation management of collaborative workflow changes in such consortia and proposes architecture for implementation of these changes through the process of component integration and agent based workflow management system where by existing workflow systems adapt to the changes.     Integrated Solution Support System for Water Management

    Solving water management problems involves technical, social, economic, political and legal challenges and thus requires an integrated approach involving people from different backgrounds and roles. The integrated approach has been given a prominent role within the European Union¿s Water Framework Directive (WFD). The WFD requires an integrated approach in water management to achieve good ecological status of all water bodies. It consists amongst others of the following main planning stages: describing objectives, assessing present state, identifying gaps between objectives and present state, developing management plan, implementing measures and evaluating their impacts. The directive prescribes broad participation and consultation to achieve its objectives. Besides the obvious desktop software, such an integrated approach can benefit from using a variety of support tools. In addition to tools for specific tasks such as numerical models and questionnaires, knowledge bases on options and process support tools may be utilized. Water stress, defined as the lack of water of appropriate quality is one issue related to, but not specifically addressed by the WFD. However, like in the WFD, a participatory approach could be used to mitigate water stress. Similarly various tools can or need to be used in such a complex process. In the AquaStress Integrated project the Integrated Solution Support System (I3S ¿ I-triple-S) is developed. One of the cornerstones of the approach taken in AquaStress is that organizing available knowledge provides sufficient information to improve the possibility to make a water stress mitigation process truly end-user driven, meaning that dedicated local information is only collected after specific need is expressed by the stakeholders in the process. The novelty of the I3S lies in the combination of such knowledge stored in knowledge-bases, with adaptable workflow management facilities and with specific task-oriented tools ¿ all originating from different sources.     Quantification and expert evaluation of evidence for chemopredictive biomarkers to personalize cancer treatment.

    Predictive biomarkers have the potential to facilitate cancer precision medicine by guiding the optimal choice of therapies for patients. However, clinicians are faced with an enormous volume of often-contradictory evidence regarding the therapeutic context of chemopredictive biomarkers.We extensively surveyed public literature to systematically review the predictive effect of 7 biomarkers claimed to predict response to various chemotherapy drugs: ERCC1-platinums, RRM1-gemcitabine, TYMS-5-fluorouracil/Capecitabine, TUBB3-taxanes, MGMT-temozolomide, TOP1-irinotecan/topotecan, and TOP2A-anthracyclines. We focused on studies that investigated changes in gene or protein expression as predictors of drug sensitivity or resistance. We considered an evidence framework that ranked studies from high level I evidence for randomized controlled trials to low level IV evidence for pre-clinical studies and patient case studies.We found that further in-depth analysis will be required to explore methodological issues, inconsistencies between studies, and tumor specific effects present even within high evidence level studies. Some of these nuances will lend themselves to automation, others will require manual curation. However, the comprehensive cataloging and analysis of dispersed public data utilizing an evidence framework provides a high level perspective on clinical actionability of these protein biomarkers. This framework and perspective will ultimately facilitate clinical trial design as well as therapeutic decision-making for individual patients

    A Study Identifying Information Technology Development Strategies for Nursing Professional Development Specialists Practicing in Healthcare Settings

    The increased use of information systems (IS) in healthcare institutions, federal health information technology (IT) policy mandating the use of information systems in patient care, and the nursing informatics agenda force healthcare organizations to address the informatics competency of its workforce (Murphy, 2010). This study validates IT competencies for Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Specialists and determines self-directed, informal learning strategies for developing information technology competency. The NPD Specialist is responsible for the professional development of nursing caregivers in healthcare settings. This study validated 53 IT competencies for the NPD Specialist role in healthcare settings. The validated competencies include current healthcare technology, federal health IT policy, evidence-based practice, and other necessary topics within healthcare. This study regarded 41 competencies (of the 53 validated IT competencies) as high importance, or essential, to the NPD Specialists role in healthcare settings today. Strategies were also identified for developing the essential IT competencies. The NPD Specialists and leaders within healthcare organizations can use the validated essential IT competencies and development strategies from this study to build IT competency amongst its workforce (ANA, 2010)

    A distributed architecture for the monitoring and analysis of time series data

    It is estimated that the quantity of digital data being transferred, processed or stored at any one time currently stands at 4.4 zettabytes (4.4 × 2 70 bytes) and this figure is expected to have grown by a factor of 10 to 44 zettabytes by 2020. Exploiting this data is, and will remain, a significant challenge. At present there is the capacity to store 33% of digital data in existence at any one time; by 2020 this capacity is expected to fall to 15%. These statistics suggest that, in the era of Big Data, the identification of important, exploitable data will need to be done in a timely manner. Systems for the monitoring and analysis of data, e.g. stock markets, smart grids and sensor networks, can be made up of massive numbers of individual components. These components can be geographically distributed yet may interact with one another via continuous data streams, which in turn may affect the state of the sender or receiver. This introduces a dynamic causality, which further complicates the overall system by introducing a temporal constraint that is difficult to accommodate. Practical approaches to realising the system described above have led to a multiplicity of analysis techniques, each of which concentrates on specific characteristics of the system being analysed and treats these characteristics as the dominant component affecting the results being sought. The multiplicity of analysis techniques introduces another layer of heterogeneity, that is heterogeneity of approach, partitioning the field to the extent that results from one domain are difficult to exploit in another. The question is asked can a generic solution for the monitoring and analysis of data that: accommodates temporal constraints; bridges the gap between expert knowledge and raw data; and enables data to be effectively interpreted and exploited in a transparent manner, be identified? The approach proposed in this dissertation acquires, analyses and processes data in a manner that is free of the constraints of any particular analysis technique, while at the same time facilitating these techniques where appropriate. Constraints are applied by defining a workflow based on the production, interpretation and consumption of data. This supports the application of different analysis techniques on the same raw data without the danger of incorporating hidden bias that may exist. To illustrate and to realise this approach a software platform has been created that allows for the transparent analysis of data, combining analysis techniques with a maintainable record of provenance so that independent third party analysis can be applied to verify any derived conclusions. In order to demonstrate these concepts, a complex real world example involving the near real-time capturing and analysis of neurophysiological data from a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) was chosen. A system was engineered to gather raw data, analyse that data using different analysis techniques, uncover information, incorporate that information into the system and curate the evolution of the discovered knowledge. The application domain was chosen for three reasons: firstly because it is complex and no comprehensive solution exists; secondly, it requires tight interaction with domain experts, thus requiring the handling of subjective knowledge and inference; and thirdly, given the dearth of neurophysiologists, there is a real world need to provide a solution for this domai

    This report was commissioned to deliver the understanding of the chosen Final Year Project title "Automated Ticket Routing Helpdesk Portal". The report will be segregated into four chapters which are the introduction including problem statement and objectives; literature review; methodology and conclusion. Helpdesk is a very powerful tool to assist IT users. A good helpdesk system is very crucial to assist users and also improve service by the helpdesk team. At Universiti Teknologi Petronas, we already have an existing helpdesk system. However, I have identified a problem in the system; the current system still uses manual ticket routing and assignment. Automated ticket routing and assignment stop manually assigning tickets to the support personnel that you think is available and has the skill set to address the ticket. Automated ticket routing and assignment uses intelligent business logic to determine which support personnel is assigned to a new ticket using a combination of skill-set, work schedule and work load balancing criteria. In the introduction, problem statements that lead to the idea of developing the project title will be cleared up and the objectives are highlighted. Towards the development of this project, information gathering from the experts will be conducted. A comprehensive research also will determine the relevancy of this project. The literature reviews will explain in depth the understanding of the proposed project

    Integration of decision support systems to improve decision support performance

    Decision support system (DSS) is a well-established research and development area. Traditional isolated, stand-alone DSS has been recently facing new challenges. In order to improve the performance of DSS to meet the challenges, research has been actively carried out to develop integrated decision support systems (IDSS). This paper reviews the current research efforts with regard to the development of IDSS. The focus of the paper is on the integration aspect for IDSS through multiple perspectives, and the technologies that support this integration. More than 100 papers and software systems are discussed. Current research efforts and the development status of IDSS are explained, compared and classified. In addition, future trends and challenges in integration are outlined. The paper concludes that by addressing integration, better support will be provided to decision makers, with the expectation of both better decisions and improved decision making processes
