    Proceedings of the 3rd Workshop on Domain-Specific Language Design and Implementation (DSLDI 2015)

    The goal of the DSLDI workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in sharing ideas on how DSLs should be designed, implemented, supported by tools, and applied in realistic application contexts. We are both interested in discovering how already known domains such as graph processing or machine learning can be best supported by DSLs, but also in exploring new domains that could be targeted by DSLs. More generally, we are interested in building a community that can drive forward the development of modern DSLs. These informal post-proceedings contain the submitted talk abstracts to the 3rd DSLDI workshop (DSLDI'15), and a summary of the panel discussion on Language Composition

    Feature interaction is nothing new and not limited to computer science. The problem of undesirable feature interaction (feature interaction problem) has already been investigated in the telecommunication domain. Our goal is the investigation of feature interaction in componet-based systems beyond telecommunication. This Technical Report embraces all position papers accepted at the ECOOP 2001 workshop no. 08 on "Feature Interaction in Composed Systems".     Bridging the Gap between Machine and Language using First-Class Building Blocks

    High-performance virtual machines (VMs) are increasingly reused for programming languages for which they were not initially designed. Unfortunately, VMs are usually tailored to specific languages, offer only a very limited interface to running applications, and are closed to extensions. As a consequence, extensions required to support new languages often entail the construction of custom VMs, thus impacting reuse, compatibility and performance. Short of building a custom VM, the language designer has to choose between the expressiveness and the performance of the language. In this dissertation we argue that the best way to open the VM is to eliminate it. We present Pinocchio, a natively compiled Smalltalk, in which we identify and reify three basic building blocks for object-oriented languages. First we define a protocol for message passing similar to calling conventions, independent of the actual message lookup mechanism. The lookup is provided by a self-supporting runtime library written in Smalltalk and compiled to native code. Since it unifies the meta- and base-level we obtain a metaobject protocol (MOP). Then we decouple the language-level manipulation of state from the machine-level implementation by extending the structural reflective model of the language with object layouts, layout scopes and slots. Finally we reify behavior using AST nodes and first-class interpreters separate from the low-level language implementation. We describe the implementations of all three first-class building blocks. For each of the blocks we provide a series of examples illustrating how they enable typical extensions to the runtime, and we provide benchmarks validating the practicality of the approaches

    Security is an important quality aspect of modern open software systems. However, it is challenging to keep such systems secure because of evolution. Security evolution can only be managed adequately if it is considered for all artifacts throughout the software development lifecycle. This article provides state of the art on the evolution of security engineering artifacts. The article covers the state of the art on evolution of security requirements, security architectures, secure code, security tests, security models, and security risks as well as security monitoring. For each of these artifacts the authors give an overview of evolution and security aspects and discuss the state of the art on its security evolution in detail. Based on this comprehensive survey, they summarize key issues and discuss directions of future research

    Refactorings to evolve object-oriented systems with aspect-oriented concepts

    Tese de doutoramento em Informática.Software engineering tools should support complete separation of concerns, by enabling the deployment of each different concern in its own unit of modularity. Unfortunately, current tools and languages – including those supporting the object-oriented programming paradigm – fail to provide a complete and effective support for the separation of all concerns. Undesirable phenomena such as code scattering and code tangling ensue. Aspect-Oriented Programming is a new programming paradigm capable of modularising crosscutting concerns. Aspect-oriented programming complements existing programming paradigms, including object-oriented programming, with constructs that provide a fuller separation of concerns. Refactoring is a technique to restructure program source code in order to improve its underlying design and style while preserving the externally observable behaviour. “Code smells” help to detect inadequate structures and designs, which are then gradually removed through refactoring processes. There is a prospect of aspect-oriented programming becoming a mainstream technology in the near future. This begs the question of how to deal with a large base of object-oriented legacy code when aspect-orientation becomes standard practice. AspectJ's backward compatibility with Java opens the way for refactoring existing Java applications to leverage the concepts and mechanisms of aspects. This requires a prior idea of good style for aspect-oriented source code, something yet to be developed and matured. This thesis contributes to the definition of a new style appropriate to aspect orientation. To this effect, this thesis documents a collection of novel refactorings enabling the extraction of crosscutting concerns from object-oriented legacy source code and the subsequent restructuring of the aspects thus obtained. In addition, this thesis presents a review of traditional object-oriented code smells so they can be used as indicators of latent aspects in object-oriented source code. Finally, this thesis proposes several novel aspect-oriented code smells. We validate the refactorings through an illustrative refactoring process.Idealmente, as ferramentas de engenharia de programas suportariam uma estrita separação de facetas, possibilitando a colocação de cada faceta na sua própria unidade modular. Infelizmente, as actuais ferramentas e linguagens – incluindo as que suportam o paradigma da orientação ao objecto – não conseguem obter uma completa e efectiva separação de todas as facetas. Daí resultam fenómenos indesejáveis tais como a dispersão e emaranhado de texto fonte. A programação orientada ao aspecto é um novo paradigma da programação capaz de modularizar facetas transversais. A orientação ao aspecto complementa os paradigmas existentes, incluindo a orientação ao objecto, com mecanismos que providenciam uma separação de facetas mais completa. A refabricação de programas é uma técnica para reestruturar o texto fonte de um programa no sentido de melhorar a concepção e estilo subjacentes, mantendo o seu comportamento externamente observável. “Maus cheiros” no texto fonte ajudam a detectar estruturas e concepções inadequadas, que são então gradualmente removidos através de processos de refabricação. Existe a perspectiva da orientação ao aspecto ter uma aceitação generalizada no futuro próximo. Coloca-se a questão de como lidar com uma grande base instalada de texto fonte orientado ao objecto legado quando tal acontecer. A compatibilidade retroactiva de AspectJ em relação a Java possibilita a refabricação das aplicações Java existentes de modo a tomarem partido dos conceitos e mecanismos dos aspectos. Porém, isto tem como pressuposto uma ideia clara de bom estilo para o texto fonte orientado ao aspecto, algo que actualmente não existe duma maneira desenvolvida e matura. Esta tese contribui para a caracterização de um novo estilo, apropriado à orientação ao aspecto. Para esse efeito, esta tese documenta uma colecção de refabricações originais através das quais facetas transversais existentes em texto legado orientado ao objecto são extraídas para aspectos, e a posterior reestruturação dos aspectos assim obtidos pode ser realizada. Esta tese apresenta também uma reapreciação dos maus cheiros orientados ao objecto tradicionais no sentido de poderem ser usados na detecção de aspectos latentes no texto fonte orientado ao objecto. Por fim, esta tese propõe diversos maus cheiros originais, orientados ao aspecto.     How To Touch a Running System

    The increasing importance of distributed and decentralized software architectures entails more and more attention for adaptive software. Obtaining adaptiveness, however, is a difficult task as the software design needs to foresee and cope with a variety of situations. Using reconfiguration of components facilitates this task, as the adaptivity is conducted on an architecture level instead of directly in the code. This results in a separation of concerns; the appropriate reconfiguration can be devised on a coarse level, while the implementation of the components can remain largely unaware of reconfiguration scenarios. We study reconfiguration in component frameworks based on formal theory. We first discuss programming with components, exemplified with the development of the cmc model checker. This highly efficient model checker is made of C++ components and serves as an example for component-based software development practice in general, and also provides insights into the principles of adaptivity. However, the component model focuses on high performance and is not geared towards using the structuring principle of components for controlled reconfiguration. We thus complement this highly optimized model by a message passing-based component model which takes reconfigurability to be its central principle. Supporting reconfiguration in a framework is about alleviating the programmer from caring about the peculiarities as much as possible. We utilize the formal description of the component model to provide an algorithm for reconfiguration that retains as much flexibility as possible, while avoiding most problems that arise due to concurrency. This algorithm is embedded in a general four-stage adaptivity model inspired by physical control loops. The reconfiguration is devised to work with stateful components, retaining their data and unprocessed messages. Reconfiguration plans, which are provided with a formal semantics, form the input of the reconfiguration algorithm. We show that the algorithm achieves perceived atomicity of the reconfiguration process for an important class of plans, i.e., the whole process of reconfiguration is perceived as one atomic step, while minimizing the use of blocking of components. We illustrate the applicability of our approach to reconfiguration by providing several examples like fault-tolerance and automated resource control
