Turing, Kasparov and the future
The 'Turing 100' Conference in Manchester was the main event of the Turing Centenary Year in 2012. This is a report and reflection on Kasparov's popular talk. Within it, he explained how Turing and influenced computer chess, his career and the chess community. Kasparov also played Chessbase's 'TURING' emulation of Turing's second paper chess engine, here labelled 'AT2'. Quasi Turing-tests, computer contributions to world championship chess, and suspected cheating in chess are also mentioned
Two-dimensional ranking of Wikipedia articles
The Library of Babel, described by Jorge Luis Borges, stores an enormous
amount of information. The Library exists {\it ab aeterno}. Wikipedia, a free
online encyclopaedia, becomes a modern analogue of such a Library. Information
retrieval and ranking of Wikipedia articles become the challenge of modern
society. While PageRank highlights very well known nodes with many ingoing
links, CheiRank highlights very communicative nodes with many outgoing links.
In this way the ranking becomes two-dimensional. Using CheiRank and PageRank we
analyze the properties of two-dimensional ranking of all Wikipedia English
articles and show that it gives their reliable classification with rich and
nontrivial features. Detailed studies are done for countries, universities,
personalities, physicists, chess players, Dow-Jones companies and other
categories.Comment: RevTex 9 pages, data, discussion added, more data at

Embedded non-interactive CAPTCHA for Fischer Random Chess.
Cheating in chess can take many forms and has existed almost as long as the game itself. The advent of computers has introduced a new form of cheating into the game. Thanks to the computational power of modern-day computers, a player can use a program to calculate thousands of moves for him or her, and determine the best possible scenario for each move and counter-move. These programs are often referred to as “bots,” and can even play the game without any user interaction. In this paper, we describe a methodology aimed at preventing bots from participating in online chess games. The proposed approach is based on the integration of a CAPTCHA protocol into a game scenario, and the subsequent inability of bots to accurately track the game states. Preliminary experimental results provide favorable feedback for further development of the proposed algorithm

Temporal Difference Learning in Complex Domains
PhDThis thesis adapts and improves on the methods of TD(k) (Sutton 1988) that were
successfully used for backgammon (Tesauro 1994) and applies them to other complex
games that are less amenable to simple pattem-matching approaches. The games
investigated are chess and shogi, both of which (unlike backgammon) require
significant amounts of computational effort to be expended on search in order to
achieve expert play. The improved methods are also tested in a non-game domain.
In the chess domain, the adapted TD(k) method is shown to successfully learn the
relative values of the pieces, and matches using these learnt piece values indicate that
they perform at least as well as piece values widely quoted in elementary chess books.
The adapted TD(X) method is also shown to work well in shogi, considered by many
researchers to be the next challenge for computer game-playing, and for which there
is no standardised set of piece values.
An original method to automatically set and adjust the major control parameters used
by TD(k) is presented. The main performance advantage comes from the learning
rate adjustment, which is based on a new concept called temporal coherence.
Experiments in both chess and a random-walk domain show that the temporal
coherence algorithm produces both faster learning and more stable values than both
human-chosen parameters and an earlier method for learning rate adjustment.
The methods presented in this thesis allow programs to learn with as little input of
external knowledge as possible, exploring the domain on their own rather than by
being taught. Further experiments show that the method is capable of handling many
hundreds of weights, and that it is not necessary to perform deep searches during the
leaming phase in order to learn effective weight
Multiple Choice Systems for Decision Support
Humans are able to think, to feel, and to sense. We are also able to compute but not very well. In contrast, computers are giants in computing. Yet, they can not do anything else besides computing. Appropriate combinations of the different gifts and strengths of human and computer may result in impressive performances. In the 3-Hirn approach one human and two computers are involved. On the computers different programs are running. The human starts the machines and inspects the solutions they propose. He compares these candidate solutions and finally decides for one of the alternatives. So, the human makes the final choice from a small number of computer proposals. In performance-oriented chess, 3-Hirn combinations consisting of an amateur player and commer-cial software have reached world class level. 3-Hirn is a Decision Support System with Multiple Choice Structure. Such Multiple Choice Systems will be exhibited and discussed
Essays in the Economics of Tournaments
This dissertation consists of three essays that focus on tournaments, incentives, and performance. The first essay presents evidence of cheating that took place in online examinations during COVID-19 lockdowns and proposes two solutions with and without a camera for the cheating problem based on the experience accumulated by online chess communities over the past two decades. The best implementable solution is a uniform online exam policy where a camera capturing each students computer screen and room is a requirement.
The second essay investigates the superstar effect using observations from chess tournaments. Superstars exist in many places. In competition, they might intimidate others, forcing their peers to exert less effort. On the other hand, superstars might encourage others because their participation in a competition encourages everybody to “step up” their game. We analyze direct and indirect effects of a superstar on their peers by analyzing six different chess superstars between 1962-2019. The results suggest that the direct superstar effect is always negative, but the indirect superstar effect depends on the intensity of the superstar. If the skill gap between the superstar and the rest is small, there is a positive peer effect. However, when the skill gap is large, the indirect effect is negative.
The third essay examines the impact of expectations on performance. Traditionally, the red corner has been designated for the favorite fighter in fighting sports. The fighter in the red corner could gain a mental edge over their opponent, with their announcement as the favorite before the fight. This essay asks Can corner assignment itself change the odds of wins and losses? Using more than 5,000 fights that took place as part of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) between 1993 and 2020, we identify fighters who were assigned to the red corner, but should have been assigned to the blue corner per their performance record. The results show that underdog fighters who get assigned to the red corner perform significantly better even against stronger opposition, suggesting performance gains with salient expectations
