    Advanced Multi-Channel SAR Imaging - Measured Data Demonstration

    Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is a well-established technique for remote sensing of the Earth. However, conventional SAR systems relying on only a single transmit and receive aperture are not capable of imaging a wide swath with high spatial resolution. Multi-channel SAR concepts, such as systems based on multiple receive apertures in azimuth, promise to overcome these restrictions, thus enabling high-resolution wide-swath imaging. Analysis revealed that these systems imperatively require sophisticated digital processing of the received signals in order to guarantee full performance independently of the spatial sample distribution imposed by the applied pulse repetition frequency (PRF). A suitable algorithm to cope with these challenges of multi-channel data is given by the “multi-channel reconstruction algorithm”, which demonstrated in comprehensive analysis and system design examples its potential for high perform-ance SAR imaging. In this context, various optimization strategies were investigated and aspects of operating multi-channel systems in burst modes such as ScanSAR or TOPS were discussed. Furthermore, a first proof-of-principle showed the algorithm’s applicability to measured multi-channel X-band data gathered by the German Aerospace Cen-ter’s (DLR) airborne F-SAR system. As a next step in the framework of multi-channel azimuth processing, this paper builds on the results recalled above and continues two paths. Firstly, focus is turned to further optimization of the proc-essing algorithm by investigating the classical Space-Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) applied to SAR. Secondly, attention is turned to the analysis of the measured multi-channel data by elaborating the impact and compensation of channel mismatch and by verifying the derived theory

    Accurate Reconstruction and Suppression for Azimuth Ambiguities in Spaceborne Stripmap SAR Images

    In this letter, an accurate mathematical model for azimuth ambiguity in stripmap synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is first constructed, with an azimuth ambiguity factor (AAF) defined as the residual amplitude and phase terms of ambiguities. Next, a novel framework for reconstructing and suppressing azimuth ambiguity is proposed based on the analysis of the AAF. In this framework, azimuth ambiguities are accurately reconstructed by applying reconstruction filters in the range Doppler and 2-D frequency domain, and then, the reconstructed signal is used for suppressing azimuth ambiguities. Moreover, the proposed framework does not depend on the statistical characteristics of a SAR image and is capable of reducing the space-variant ambiguities. As verified by both simulated data and real TerraSAR-X data, the proposed method is capable of suppressing azimuth ambiguities in SAR images

    Automatic refocus and feature extraction of single-look complex SAR signatures of vessels

    In recent years, spaceborne synthetic aperture radar ( SAR) technology has been considered as a complement to cooperative vessel surveillance systems thanks to its imaging capabilities. In this paper, a processing chain is presented to explore the potential of using basic stripmap single-look complex ( SLC) SAR images of vessels for the automatic extraction of their dimensions and heading. Local autofocus is applied to the vessels' SAR signatures to compensate blurring artefacts in the azimuth direction, improving both their image quality and their estimated dimensions. For the heading, the orientation ambiguities of the vessels' SAR signatures are solved using the direction of their ground-range velocity from the analysis of their Doppler spectra. Preliminary results are provided using five images of vessels from SLC RADARSAT-2 stripmap images. These results have shown good agreement with their respective ground-truth data from Automatic Identification System ( AIS) records at the time of the acquisitions.Postprint (published version

    Offshore oil spill detection using synthetic aperture radar

    Among the different types of marine pollution, oil spill has been considered as a major threat to the sea ecosystems. The source of the oil pollution can be located on the mainland or directly at sea. The sources of oil pollution at sea are discharges coming from ships, offshore platforms or natural seepage from sea bed. Oil pollution from sea-based sources can be accidental or deliberate. Different sensors to detect and monitor oil spills could be onboard vessels, aircraft, or satellites. Vessels equipped with specialised radars, can detect oil at sea but they can cover a very limited area. One of the established ways to monitor sea-based oil pollution is the use of satellites equipped with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR).The aim of the work presented in this thesis is to identify optimum set of feature extracted parameters and implement methods at various stages for oil spill detection from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. More than 200 images of ERS-2, ENVSAT and RADARSAT 2 SAR sensor have been used to assess proposed feature vector for oil spill detection methodology, which involves three stages: segmentation for dark spot detection, feature extraction and classification of feature vector. Unfortunately oil spill is not only the phenomenon that can create a dark spot in SAR imagery. There are several others meteorological and oceanographic and wind induced phenomena which may lead to a dark spot in SAR imagery. Therefore, these dark objects also appear similar to the dark spot due to oil spill and are called as look-alikes. These look-alikes thus cause difficulty in detecting oil spill spots as their primary characteristic similar to oil spill spots. To get over this difficulty, feature extraction becomes important; a stage which may involve selection of appropriate feature extraction parameters. The main objective of this dissertation is to identify the optimum feature vector in order to segregate oil spill and ‘look-alike’ spots. A total of 44 Feature extracted parameters have been studied. For segmentation, four methods; based on edge detection, adaptive theresholding, artificial neural network (ANN) segmentation and the other on contrast split segmentation have been implemented. Spot features are extracted from both the dark spots themselves and their surroundings. Classification stage was performed using two different classification techniques, first one is based on ANN and the other based on a two-stage processing that combines classification tree analysis and fuzzy logic. A modified feature vector, including both new and improved features, is suggested for better description of different types of dark spots. An ANN classifier using full spectrum of feature parameters has also been developed and evaluated. The implemented methodology appears promising in detecting dark spots and discriminating oil spills from look-alikes and processing time is well below any operational service requirements

    Innovative Adaptive Techniques for Multi Channel Spaceborne SAR Systems

    Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is a well-known technology which allows to coherently combine multiple returns from (typically) ground-based targets from a moving radar mounted either on an airborne or on a space-borne vehicle. The relative motion between the targets on ground and the platform causes a Doppler effect, which is exploited to discriminate along-track positions of targets themselves. In addition, as most of conventional radar, a pulsed wide-band waveform is transmitted periodically, thus allowing even a radar discrimination capability in the range direction (i.e. in distance). For side-looking acquisition geometries, the along-track and the range directions are almost orthogonal, so that the two dimensional target discrimination capabiliy results in the possibility to produce images of the illuminated area on ground. A side-looking geometry consists in the radar antenna to be, either mechanically or electronically, oriented perpendicular to the observed area. Nowadays technology allows discrimination capability (also referred to as resolution) in both alongtrack and range directions in the order of few tenths of centimeters. Since the SAR is a microwave active sensor, this technology assure the possibility to produce images of the terrain independently of the sunlight illumination and/or weather conditions. This makes the SAR a very useful instrument for monitoring and mapping both the natural and the artificial activities over the Earth’s surface. Among all the limitations of a single-channel SAR system, this work focuses over some of them which are briefly listed below: a) the performance achievable in terms of resolution are usually paid in terms of system complexity, dimension, mass and cost; b) since the SAR is a coherent active sensor, it is vulnerable to both intentionally and unintentionally radio-frequency interferences which might limit normal system operability; c) since the Doppler effect it is used to discriminate targets (assumed to be stationary) on the ground, this causes an intrinsic ambiguity in the interpretation of backscattered returns from moving targets. These drawbacks can be easily overcome by resorting to a Multi-cannel SAR (M-SAR) system

    Investigations on OFDM Signal for Range Ambiguity Suppression in SAR Configuration

    International audienceThis paper presents an opportunity to cancel range ambiguities in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) configuration. One of the limitations of SAR systems is the range ambiguity phenomenon that appears with long delayed echoes. The reflected signal corresponding to one pulse is detected when the radar has already transmitted the next pulse. Thus, this signal is considered as an echo from the next pulse. This paper investigates the opportunity of coding the transmitted pulses using an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing pulse. The results show that coded-OFDM signals outperform conventional chirp signal and make it possible to relax constraints placed upon the pulse repetition frequency

    This dissertation work was to examine the feasibility of InSAR through the ice sheets to create a fine resolution basal topography map and extraction of basal composition. InSAR was shown to be possible through the ice sheet, using data collected by the MCRDS radar around the NEEM drill site. Reflectivity maps were generated leading to the possibility of extracting useful basal composition data.     Statistical tests for a ship detector based on the Polarimetric Notch Filter

    Ship detection is an important topic in remote sensing and Synthetic Aperture Radar has a valuable contribution, allowing detection at night time and with almost any weather conditions. Additionally, polarimetry can play a significant role considering its capability to discriminate between different targets. Recently, a new ship detector exploiting polarimetric information was developed, namely the Geometrical Perturbation Polarimetric Notch Filter (GP-PNF). This work is focused on devising two statistical tests for the GP-PNF. The latter allow an automatic and adaptive selection of the detector threshold. Initially, the probability density function (pdf) of the detector is analytically derived. Finally, the Neyman-Pearson (NP) lemma is exploited to set the threshold calculating probabilities using the clutter pdf (i.e. a Constant False Alarm Rate, CFAR) and a likelihood ratio (LR). The goodness of fit of the clutter pdf is tested with four real SAR datasets acquired by the RADARSAT-2 and the TanDEM-X satellites. The former images are quad-polarimetric, while the latter are dual-polarimetric HH/VV. The data are accompanied by the Automatic Identification System (AIS) location of vessels, which facilitates the validation of the detection masks. It can be observed that the pdf's fit the data histograms and they pass the two sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov and χ2 tests
