Recent trends of the most used metaheuristic techniques for distribution network reconfiguration

    Get PDF
Distribution network reconfiguration (DNR) continues to be a good option to reduce technical losses in a distribution power grid. However, this non-linear combinatorial problem is not easy to assess by exact methods when solving for large distribution networks, which requires large computational times. For solving this type of problem, some researchers prefer to use metaheuristic techniques due to convergence speed, near-optimal solutions, and simple programming. Some literature reviews specialize in topics concerning the optimization of power network reconfiguration and try to cover most techniques. Nevertheless, this does not allow detailing properly the use of each technique, which is important to identify the trend. The contributions of this paper are three-fold. First, it presents the objective functions and constraints used in DNR with the most used metaheuristics. Second, it reviews the most important techniques such as particle swarm optimization (PSO), genetic algorithm (GA), simulated annealing (SA), ant colony optimization (ACO), immune algorithms (IA), and tabu search (TS). Finally, this paper presents the trend of each technique from 2011 to 2016. This paper will be useful for researchers interested in knowing the advances of recent approaches in these metaheuristics applied to DNR in order to continue developing new best algorithms and improving solutions for the topi

Optimal Reconfiguration and Capacitor Allocation in Radial Distribution Systems Using the Hybrid Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm in the Fuzzy Framework

    Get PDF
In distribution systems, in order to diminish power losses and keep voltage profiles within acceptable limits, network reconfiguration and capacitor placement are commonly used. In this paper, the Hybrid Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm (HSFLA) is used to optimize balanced and unbalanced radial distribution systems by means of a network reconfiguration and capacitor placement. High accuracy and fast convergence are the highlighted points of the proposed approach because of solving the multi-objective reconfiguration and capacitor placement in fuzzy frame work. These objectives are the minimization of total network real power losses, the minimization of buses voltage violation, and load balancing in the feeders. Each objective is transferred into fuzzy domain using membership function and fuzzified separately. Then, the overall fuzzy satisfaction function is formed and considered as a fitness function. To gain the optimal solution, the value of this function will be maximized. In the literature, several reconfiguration and capacitor placement methods have been investigated, which are implemented separately. However, there are few studies which simultaneously apply these two strategies. The proposed algorithm has been implemented in three IEEE test systems (two balanced and one unbalanced systems). Numerical results obtained by simulation show that the performance of the HSFLA algorithm is much higher than several other meta-heuristic algorithms

The particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is widely used to solve a variety of complicated engineering problems. However, PSO may suffer from an effective balance between local and global search ability in the solution search process. This study proposes a new acceleration coefficient for the PSO algorithm to overcome this issue. The proposed coefficient is implemented on the distribution network reconfiguration (DNR) problem to reduce power loss. The lowest power loss is obtained while problem constraints (maintain radial structure, voltage limits, and power flow balance) are satisfied with the proposed method. The validity of the proposed acceleration coefficient-based binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO) in handling the DNR problem is examined through simulation studies on IEEE 33-bus, P&G 69-bus, and 84-bus Taiwan Power Company (TPC) practical distribution networks. Furthermore, the DNR problem is evaluated regarding energy cost and environmental issues. Finally, the average computational times of the different acceleration coefficient-based PSO methods are compared. The solution speed of the proposed acceleration coefficient-based method is faster than the other methods in the DNR problem

The paper presents new strategies and algorithms for future mobile power infrastructure planning and operational management in smart cities. The efforts have been made to develop a resilient Electric Vehicle (EV) infrastructure for smart city applications. The goal of this work is to maximize the profit of utility and EV owners participating in real-time smart city energy market subjected to numerous techno-economic constraints of the EVs and power distribution system. For effective real-time applications, the knowledge of artificial intelligence and internet of things (IoT) are used in the proposed model. In order to validate the proposed model for smart city applications, IEEE 33-bus radial distribution network is adopted as a small city power network. The simulation results of proposed model are found to be encouraging when it is compared with the case in which conventional strategies are used

Multi-objective Reconfiguration of Distribution Network Using a Heuristic Modified Ant Colony Optimization Algorithm

Abstract In this paper, a multi-objective reconfiguration problem has been solved simultaneously by a modified ant colony optimization algorithm. Two objective functions, real power loss and energy not supplied index (ENS), were utilized. Multi-objective modified ant colony optimization algorithm has been generated by adding non-dominated sorting technique and changing the pheromone updating rule of original ACO. By proposed algorithm, a group of the best solutions can be obtained that called pareto front. None of these solutions are completely better than others among this pareto front. Furthermore, another objective function, i.e., voltage profile index has been separately considered to have better comparison between pareto front members. Simulations have been performed on two standard IEEE 16-bus and 33-bus test systems. The results show that the proposed heuristic modified algorithm generates welldistributed Pareto optimal solutions for the multi-objective reconfiguration problem1

Optimal allocation of battery energy storage systems to enhance system performance and reliability in unbalanced distribution networks

The continuously increasing renewable distributed generation (DG) penetration rate significantly reduces environmental pollution and power generation cost and satisfies society’s rapid growth in electricity demand. Nevertheless, high penetration of renewable DGs, such as wind power and photovoltaics (PV), might deteriorate the system’s efficiency and reliability due to its intermittent and stochastic natures. Introducing battery energy storage systems (BESSs) to the distribution system provides a practical method to compensate for the above deficiency since it can deliver and absorb power when needed. Hence, it is important to determine the optimal allocation of BESS to achieve maximum assistance in the grid. This study proposes an optimal BESS allocation methodology to improve reliability and economics in unbalanced distribution systems. The optimal BESS allocation problem is solved by simultaneously minimizing the cost of energy interruption, expected energy not supplied, power loss, line loading, voltage deviation, and BESS cost. The proposed technique is implemented and analyzed on a high renewable DG penetrated unbalanced IEEE-33 bus network using DIgSILENT PowerFactory software (version 2020 SP2A). An enhanced grey wolf optimization (EGWO) algorithm is developed to optimize BESS location and size according to the selected objective function. The simulation results show that the proposed optimal BESS optimization technique significantly improves the economics and reliability in unbalanced distribution systems and the EGWO outperforms the gray wolf optimization (GWO) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms
