    Distribution System State Estimation in the Presence of High Solar Penetration

    Low-to-medium voltage distribution networks are experiencing rising levels of distributed energy resources, including renewable generation, along with improved sensing, communication, and automation infrastructure. As such, state estimation methods for distribution systems are becoming increasingly relevant as a means to enable better control strategies that can both leverage the benefits and mitigate the risks associated with high penetration of variable and uncertain distributed generation resources. The primary challenges of this problem include modeling complexities (nonlinear, non-convex power-flow equations), limited availability of sensor measurements, and high penetration of uncertain renewable generation. This paper formulates the distribution system state estimation as a nonlinear, weighted, least squares problem, based on sensor measurements as well as forecast data (both load and generation). We investigate the sensitivity of state estimator accuracy to (load/generation) forecast uncertainties, sensor accuracy, and sensor coverage levels.Comment: accepted for presentation at the IEEE 2019 American Control Conferenc

    An Analysis of Camera Configurations and Depth Estimation Algorithms For Triple-Camera Computer Vision Systems

    The ability to accurately map and localize relevant objects surrounding a vehicle is an important task for autonomous vehicle systems. Currently, many of the environmental mapping approaches rely on the expensive LiDAR sensor. Researchers have been attempting to transition to cheaper sensors like the camera, but so far, the mapping accuracy of single-camera and dual-camera systems has not matched the accuracy of LiDAR systems. This thesis examines depth estimation algorithms and camera configurations of a triple-camera system to determine if sensor data from an additional perspective will improve the accuracy of camera-based systems. Using a synthetic dataset, the performance of a selection of stereo depth estimation algorithms is compared to the performance of two triple-camera depth estimation algorithms: disparity fusion and cost fusion. The cost fusion algorithm in both a multi-baseline and multi-axis triple-camera configuration outperformed the environmental mapping accuracy of non-CNN algorithms in a two-camera configuration

    Parallelized Particle and Gaussian Sum Particle Filters for Large Scale Freeway Traffic Systems

    Large scale traffic systems require techniques able to: 1) deal with high amounts of data and heterogenous data coming from different types of sensors, 2) provide robustness in the presence of sparse sensor data, 3) incorporate different models that can deal with various traffic regimes, 4) cope with multimodal conditional probability density functions for the states. Often centralized architectures face challenges due to high communication demands. This paper develops new estimation techniques able to cope with these problems of large traffic network systems. These are Parallelized Particle Filters (PPFs) and a Parallelized Gaussian Sum Particle Filter (PGSPF) that are suitable for on-line traffic management. We show how complex probability density functions of the high dimensional trafc state can be decomposed into functions with simpler forms and the whole estimation problem solved in an efcient way. The proposed approach is general, with limited interactions which reduces the computational time and provides high estimation accuracy. The efciency of the PPFs and PGSPFs is evaluated in terms of accuracy, complexity and communication demands and compared with the case where all processing is centralized

    Near-Optimal Sensor Scheduling for Batch State Estimation: Complexity, Algorithms, and Limits

    In this paper, we focus on batch state estimation for linear systems. This problem is important in applications such as environmental field estimation, robotic navigation, and target tracking. Its difficulty lies on that limited operational resources among the sensors, e.g., shared communication bandwidth or battery power, constrain the number of sensors that can be active at each measurement step. As a result, sensor scheduling algorithms must be employed. Notwithstanding, current sensor scheduling algorithms for batch state estimation scale poorly with the system size and the time horizon. In addition, current sensor scheduling algorithms for Kalman filtering, although they scale better, provide no performance guarantees or approximation bounds for the minimization of the batch state estimation error. In this paper, one of our main contributions is to provide an algorithm that enjoys both the estimation accuracy of the batch state scheduling algorithms and the low time complexity of the Kalman filtering scheduling algorithms. In particular: 1) our algorithm is near-optimal: it achieves a solution up to a multiplicative factor 1/2 from the optimal solution, and this factor is close to the best approximation factor 1/e one can achieve in polynomial time for this problem; 2) our algorithm has (polynomial) time complexity that is not only lower than that of the current algorithms for batch state estimation; it is also lower than, or similar to, that of the current algorithms for Kalman filtering. We achieve these results by proving two properties for our batch state estimation error metric, which quantifies the square error of the minimum variance linear estimator of the batch state vector: a) it is supermodular in the choice of the sensors; b) it has a sparsity pattern (it involves matrices that are block tri-diagonal) that facilitates its evaluation at each sensor set.Comment: Correction of typos in proof

    An essential part of future collision avoidance systems is to be able to predict road curvature. This can be based on vision data, but the lateral movement of leading vehicles can also be used to support road geometry estimation. This paper presents a method for detecting lane departures, including lane changes, of leading vehicles. This information is used to adapt the dynamic models used in the estimation algorithm in order to accommodate for the fact that a lane departure is in progress. The goal is to improve the accuracy of the road geometry estimates, which is affected by the motion of leading vehicles. The significantly improved performance is demonstrated using sensor data from authentic traffic environments

    Evaluation of classical machine learning techniques towards urban sound recognition embedded systems

    Automatic urban sound classification is a desirable capability for urban monitoring systems, allowing real-time monitoring of urban environments and recognition of events. Current embedded systems provide enough computational power to perform real-time urban audio recognition. Using such devices for the edge computation when acting as nodes of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) drastically alleviates the required bandwidth consumption. In this paper, we evaluate classical Machine Learning (ML) techniques for urban sound classification on embedded devices with respect to accuracy and execution time. This evaluation provides a real estimation of what can be expected when performing urban sound classification on such constrained devices. In addition, a cascade approach is also proposed to combine ML techniques by exploiting embedded characteristics such as pipeline or multi-thread execution present in current embedded devices. The accuracy of this approach is similar to the traditional solutions, but provides in addition more flexibility to prioritize accuracy or timing
