    Planning Algorithms for Multi-Robot Active Perception

    A fundamental task of robotic systems is to use on-board sensors and perception algorithms to understand high-level semantic properties of an environment. These semantic properties may include a map of the environment, the presence of objects, or the parameters of a dynamic field. Observations are highly viewpoint dependent and, thus, the performance of perception algorithms can be improved by planning the motion of the robots to obtain high-value observations. This motivates the problem of active perception, where the goal is to plan the motion of robots to improve perception performance. This fundamental problem is central to many robotics applications, including environmental monitoring, planetary exploration, and precision agriculture. The core contribution of this thesis is a suite of planning algorithms for multi-robot active perception. These algorithms are designed to improve system-level performance on many fronts: online and anytime planning, addressing uncertainty, optimising over a long time horizon, decentralised coordination, robustness to unreliable communication, predicting plans of other agents, and exploiting characteristics of perception models. We first propose the decentralised Monte Carlo tree search algorithm as a generally-applicable, decentralised algorithm for multi-robot planning. We then present a self-organising map algorithm designed to find paths that maximally observe points of interest. Finally, we consider the problem of mission monitoring, where a team of robots monitor the progress of a robotic mission. A spatiotemporal optimal stopping algorithm is proposed and a generalisation for decentralised monitoring. Experimental results are presented for a range of scenarios, such as marine operations and object recognition. Our analytical and empirical results demonstrate theoretically-interesting and practically-relevant properties that support the use of the approaches in practice

    Persistent ocean monitoring with underwater gliders: Adapting sampling resolution

    Ocean processes are dynamic and complex and occur on multiple spatial and temporal scales. To obtain a synoptic view of such processes, ocean scientists collect data over long time periods. Historically, measurements were continually provided by fixed sensors, e.g., moorings, or gathered from ships. Recently, an increase in the utilization of autonomous underwater vehicles has enabled a more dynamic data acquisition approach. However, we still do not utilize the full capabilities of these vehicles. Here we present algorithms that produce persistent monitoring missions for underwater vehicles by balancing path following accuracy and sampling resolution for a given region of interest, which addresses a pressing need among ocean scientists to efficiently and effectively collect high-value data. More specifically, this paper proposes a path planning algorithm and a speed control algorithm for underwater gliders, which together give informative trajectories for the glider to persistently monitor a patch of ocean. We optimize a cost function that blends two competing factors: maximize the information value along the path while minimizing deviation from the planned path due to ocean currents. Speed is controlled along the planned path by adjusting the pitch angle of the underwater glider, so that higher resolution samples are collected in areas of higher information value. The resulting paths are closed circuits that can be repeatedly traversed to collect long-term ocean data in dynamic environments. The algorithms were tested during sea trials on an underwater glider operating off the coast of southern California, as well as in Monterey Bay, California. The experimental results show improvements in both data resolution and path reliability compared to previously executed sampling paths used in the respective regions.United States.     Multi-vehicle Dynamic Water Surface Monitoring

    Repeated exploration of a water surface to detect objects of interest and their subsequent monitoring is important in search-and-rescue or ocean clean-up operations. Since the location of any detected object is dynamic, we propose to address the combined surface exploration and monitoring of the detected objects by modeling spatio-temporal reward states and coordinating a team of vehicles to collect the rewards. The model characterizes the dynamics of the water surface and enables the planner to predict future system states. The state reward value relevant to the particular water surface cell increases over time and is nullified by being in a sensor range of a vehicle. Thus, the proposed multi-vehicle planning approach is to minimize the collective value of the dynamic model reward states. The purpose is to address vehicles' motion constraints by using model predictive control on receding horizon, thus fully exploiting the utilized vehicles' motion capabilities. Based on the evaluation results, the approach indicates improvement in a solution to the kinematic orienteering problem and the team orienteering problem in the monitoring task compared to the existing solutions. The proposed approach has been experimentally verified, supporting its feasibility in real-world monitoring tasks

    Distributed allocation of mobile sensing swarms in gyre flows

    We address the synthesis of distributed control policies to enable a swarm of homogeneous mobile sensors to maintain a desired spatial distribution in a geophysical flow environment, or workspace. In this article, we assume the mobile sensors (or robots) have a "map" of the environment denoting the locations of the Lagrangian coherent structures or LCS boundaries. Based on this information, we design agent-level hybrid control policies that leverage the surrounding fluid dynamics and inherent environmental noise to enable the team to maintain a desired distribution in the workspace. We establish the stability properties of the ensemble dynamics of the distributed control policies. Since realistic quasi-geostrophic ocean models predict double-gyre flow solutions, we use a wind-driven multi-gyre flow model to verify the feasibility of the proposed distributed control strategy and compare the proposed control strategy with a baseline deterministic allocation strategy.     Towards a 3D hydrodynamic characterization from the joint analysis and blending of multiplatform observations for potential marine applications in the southeastern Bay of Biscay

    277 p.La necesidad de un mayor conocimiento y una gestión sostenible de las áreas costeras ha suscitado la instalación de observatorios que monitorizan su estado. A pesar de que la información aportada por estos observatorios es esencial la compleja hidrodinámica de estas áreas dificulta una completa caracterización de las mismas. Además, la cobertura espacial de las observaciones es, en general, relativamente escasa especialmente en la columna de agua. Por tanto, el objetivo de esta tesis es combinar los datos disponibles de diferentes plataformas de observación en el sureste del Golfo de Bizkaia proporcionados por el sistema de oceanografía operacional de la costa vasca (EuskOOS) y también por fuentes externas para caracterizar en 3D la hidrodinámica de la zona. Para ello se han analizado conjuntamente las diferentes observaciones disponibles y se han utilizado métodos de reconstrucción de datos que permiten expandir dichas observaciones en 3D. Las observaciones conjuntas permiten detectar los principales procesos hidrodinámicos como los remolinos o la corriente de talud. Por otro lado, se observa que el usode los métodos de reconstrucción evaluados es factible en el área, especialmente el de la interpolación óptima de orden reducido (ROOI). Las observaciones y las corrientes reconstruidas por el ROOI han permitido caracterizar un remolino en 3D en el área de estudio por primera vez. Además, los campos de corrientes reconstruidos han posibilitado simular la advección superficial y subsuperficial de huevos y larvas de anchoa en la zona, mostrando el potencial del ROOI para aplicaciones marinas

    Augmented Terrain-Based Navigation to Enable Persistent Autonomy for Underwater Vehicles in GPS-Denied Environments

    Aquatic robots, such as Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), play a major role in the study of ocean processes that require long-term sampling efforts and commonly perform navigation via dead-reckoning using an accelerometer, a magnetometer, a compass, an IMU and a depth sensor for feedback. However, these instruments are subjected to large drift, leading to unbounded uncertainty in location. Moreover, the spatio-temporal dynamics of the ocean environment, coupled with limited communication capabilities, make navigation and localization difficult, especially in coastal regions where the majority of interesting phenomena occur. To add to this, the interesting features are themselves spatio-temporally dynamic, and effective sampling requires a good understanding of vehicle localization relative to the sampled feature. Therefore, our work is motivated by the desire to enable intelligent data collection of complex dynamics and processes that occur in coastal ocean environments to further our understanding and prediction capabilities. The study originated from the need to localize and navigate aquatic robots in a GPS-denied environment and examine the role of the spatio-temporal dynamics of the ocean into the localization and navigation processes. The methods and techniques needed range from the data collection to the localization and navigation algorithms used on-board of the aquatic vehicles. The focus of this work is to develop algorithms for localization and navigation of AUVs in GPS-denied environments. We developed an Augmented terrain-based framework that incorporates physical science data, i.e., temperature, salinity, pH, etc., to enhance the topographic map that the vehicle uses to navigate. In this navigation scheme, the bathymetric data are combined with the physical science data to enrich the uniqueness of the underlying terrain map and increase the accuracy of underwater localization. Another technique developed in this work addresses the problem of tracking an underwater vehicle when the GPS signal suddenly becomes unavailable. The methods include the whitening of the data to reveal the true statistical distance between datapoints and also incorporates physical science data to enhance the topographic map. Simulations were performed at Lake Nighthorse, Colorado, USA, between April 25th and May 2nd 2018 and at Big Fisherman\u27s Cove, Santa Catalina Island, California, USA, on July 13th and July 14th 2016. Different missions were executed on different environments (snow, rain and the presence of plumes). Results showed that these two methodologies for localization and tracking work for reference maps that had been recorded within a week and the accuracy on the average error in localization can be compared to the errors found when using GPS if the time in which the observations were taken are the same period of the day (morning, afternoon or night). The whitening of the data had positive results when compared to localizing without whitening

    Contemporary robots have become exceptionally skilled at achieving specific tasks in structured environments. However, they often fail when faced with the limitless permutations of real-world unstructured environments. This motivates robotics methods which learn from experience, rather than follow a pre-defined set of rules. In this thesis, we present a range of learning-based methods aimed at enabling robots, operating in dynamic and unstructured environments, to better understand their surroundings, anticipate the actions of others, and take informed actions accordingly

    Information-theoretic Reasoning in Distributed and Autonomous Systems

    The increasing prevalence of distributed and autonomous systems is transforming decision making in industries as diverse as agriculture, environmental monitoring, and healthcare. Despite significant efforts, challenges remain in robustly planning under uncertainty. In this thesis, we present a number of information-theoretic decision rules for improving the analysis and control of complex adaptive systems. We begin with the problem of quantifying the data storage (memory) and transfer (communication) within information processing systems. We develop an information-theoretic framework to study nonlinear interactions within cooperative and adversarial scenarios, solely from observations of each agent's dynamics. This framework is applied to simulations of robotic soccer games, where the measures reveal insights into team performance, including correlations of the information dynamics to the scoreline. We then study the communication between processes with latent nonlinear dynamics that are observed only through a filter. By using methods from differential topology, we show that the information-theoretic measures commonly used to infer communication in observed systems can also be used in certain partially observed systems. For robotic environmental monitoring, the quality of data depends on the placement of sensors. These locations can be improved by either better estimating the quality of future viewpoints or by a team of robots operating concurrently. By robustly handling the uncertainty of sensor model measurements, we are able to present the first end-to-end robotic system for autonomously tracking small dynamic animals, with a performance comparable to human trackers. We then solve the issue of coordinating multi-robot systems through distributed optimisation techniques. These allow us to develop non-myopic robot trajectories for these tasks and, importantly, show that these algorithms provide guarantees for convergence rates to the optimal payoff sequence
