A study of systems implementation languages for the POCCNET system
The results are presented of a study of systems implementation languages for the Payload Operations Control Center Network (POCCNET). Criteria are developed for evaluating the languages, and fifteen existing languages are evaluated on the basis of these criteria
Program representation size in an intermediate language with intersection and union types
The CIL compiler for core Standard ML compiles whole programs using a novel typed intermediate language (TIL) with intersection and union types and flow labels on both terms and types. The CIL term representation duplicates portions of the program where intersection types are introduced and union types are eliminated. This duplication makes it easier to represent type information and to introduce customized data representations. However, duplication incurs compile-time space costs that are potentially much greater than are incurred in TILs employing type-level abstraction or quantification. In this paper, we present empirical data on the compile-time space costs of using CIL as an intermediate language. The data shows that these costs can be made tractable by using sufficiently fine-grained flow analyses together with standard hash-consing techniques. Modular, Fully-abstract Compilation by Approximate Back-translation
A compiler is fully-abstract if the compilation from source language programs
to target language programs reflects and preserves behavioural equivalence.
Such compilers have important security benefits, as they limit the power of an
attacker interacting with the program in the target language to that of an
attacker interacting with the program in the source language. Proving compiler
full-abstraction is, however, rather complicated. A common proof technique is
based on the back-translation of target-level program contexts to
behaviourally-equivalent source-level contexts. However, constructing such a
back- translation is problematic when the source language is not strong enough
to embed an encoding of the target language. For instance, when compiling from
STLC to ULC, the lack of recursive types in the former prevents such a
back-translation.
We propose a general and elegant solution for this problem. The key insight
is that it suffices to construct an approximate back-translation. The
approximation is only accurate up to a certain number of steps and conservative
beyond that, in the sense that the context generated by the back-translation
may diverge when the original would not, but not vice versa. Based on this
insight, we describe a general technique for proving compiler full-abstraction
and demonstrate it on a compiler from STLC to ULC. The proof uses asymmetric
cross-language logical relations and makes innovative use of step-indexing to
express the relation between a context and its approximate back-translation.
The proof extends easily to common compiler patterns such as modular
compilation and it, to the best of our knowledge, it is the first compiler full
abstraction proof to have been fully mechanised in Coq. We believe this proof
technique can scale to challenging settings and enable simpler, more scalable
proofs of compiler full-abstraction
Type Inference for Deadlock Detection in a Multithreaded Polymorphic Typed Assembly Language
We previously developed a polymorphic type system and a type checker for a
multithreaded lock-based polymorphic typed assembly language (MIL) that ensures
that well-typed programs do not encounter race conditions. This paper extends
such work by taking into consideration deadlocks. The extended type system
verifies that locks are acquired in the proper order. Towards this end we
require a language with annotations that specify the locking order. Rather than
asking the programmer (or the compiler's backend) to specifically annotate each
newly introduced lock, we present an algorithm to infer the annotations. The
result is a type checker whose input language is non-decorated as before, but
that further checks that programs are exempt from deadlocks
Speculative Staging for Interpreter Optimization
Interpreters have a bad reputation for having lower performance than
just-in-time compilers. We present a new way of building high performance
interpreters that is particularly effective for executing dynamically typed
programming languages. The key idea is to combine speculative staging of
optimized interpreter instructions with a novel technique of incrementally and
iteratively concerting them at run-time.
This paper introduces the concepts behind deriving optimized instructions
from existing interpreter instructions---incrementally peeling off layers of
complexity. When compiling the interpreter, these optimized derivatives will be
compiled along with the original interpreter instructions. Therefore, our
technique is portable by construction since it leverages the existing
compiler's backend. At run-time we use instruction substitution from the
interpreter's original and expensive instructions to optimized instruction
derivatives to speed up execution.
Our technique unites high performance with the simplicity and portability of
interpreters---we report that our optimization makes the CPython interpreter up
to more than four times faster, where our interpreter closes the gap between

A component-based model and language for wireless sensor network applications
Wireless sensor networks are often used by experts in many different fields to gather data pertinent to their work. Although their expertise may not include software engineering, these users are expected to produce low-level software for a concurrent, real-time and resource-constrained computing environment. In this paper, we introduce a component-based model for wireless sensor network applications and a language, Insense, for supporting the model. An application is modelled as a composition of interacting components and the application model is preserved in the Insense implementation where active components communicate via typed channels. The primary design criteria for Insense include: to abstract over low-level concerns for ease of programming; to permit worst-case space and time usage of programs to be determinable; to support the fractal composition of components whilst eliminating implicit dependencies between them; and, to facilitate the construction of low footprint programs suitable for resource-constrained devices. NASTRAN general purpose interface requirements document
This NASTRAN (NASA STRuctural ANalysis) General Purpose Interface Requirements Document (IRD) defines standards for deliverables required of New Capability Contractors (NCCs) and relates these deliverables to the software development cycle. It also defines standards to be followed by NCCs for adding to and modifying the code in the NASTRAN software system and for adding to and modifying the four official NASTRAN manuals: The NASTRAN Theoretical Manual, the NASTRAN User's Manual, The NASTRAN Programmer's Manual, and The NASTRAN Demonstration Problem Manual. It is intended that this General Purpose IRD shall be incorporated by reference in all contracts for a new NASTRAN capability
Julia: A Fresh Approach to Numerical Computing
Bridging cultures that have often been distant, Julia combines expertise from
the diverse fields of computer science and computational science to create a
new approach to numerical computing. Julia is designed to be easy and fast.
Julia questions notions generally held as "laws of nature" by practitioners of
numerical computing:
1. High-level dynamic programs have to be slow.
2. One must prototype in one language and then rewrite in another language
for speed or deployment, and
3. There are parts of a system for the programmer, and other parts best left
untouched as they are built by the experts.
We introduce the Julia programming language and its design --- a dance
between specialization and abstraction. Specialization allows for custom
treatment. Multiple dispatch, a technique from computer science, picks the
right algorithm for the right circumstance. Abstraction, what good computation
is really about, recognizes what remains the same after differences are
stripped away. Abstractions in mathematics are captured as code through another
technique from computer science, generic programming.
Julia shows that one can have machine performance without sacrificing human
