On the Security of the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast Protocol
Automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) is the communications
protocol currently being rolled out as part of next generation air
transportation systems. As the heart of modern air traffic control, it will
play an essential role in the protection of two billion passengers per year,
besides being crucial to many other interest groups in aviation. The inherent
lack of security measures in the ADS-B protocol has long been a topic in both
the aviation circles and in the academic community. Due to recently published
proof-of-concept attacks, the topic is becoming ever more pressing, especially
with the deadline for mandatory implementation in most airspaces fast
approaching.
This survey first summarizes the attacks and problems that have been reported
in relation to ADS-B security. Thereafter, it surveys both the theoretical and
practical efforts which have been previously conducted concerning these issues,
including possible countermeasures. In addition, the survey seeks to go beyond
the current state of the art and gives a detailed assessment of security
measures which have been developed more generally for related wireless networks
such as sensor networks and vehicular ad hoc networks, including a taxonomy of

Secure Position-Based Routing for VANETs
Vehicular communication (VC) systems have the potential to improve road safety and driving comfort. Nevertheless, securing the operation is a prerequisite for deployment. So far, the security of VC applications has mostly drawn the attention of research efforts, while comprehensive solutions to protect the network operation have not been developed. In this paper, we address this problem: we provide a scheme that secures geographic position-based routing, which has been widely accepted as the appropriate one for VC. Moreover, we focus on the scheme currently chosen and evaluated in the Car2Car Communication Consortium (C2C-CC). We integrate security mechanisms to protect the position-based routing functionality and services (beaconing, multi-hop forwarding, and geo-location discovery), and enhance the network robustness. We propose defense mechanisms, relying both on cryptographic primitives, and plausibility checks mitigating false position injection. Our implementation and initial measurements show that the security overhead is low and the proposed scheme deployable
State-of-the-art authentication and verification schemes in VANETs:A survey
Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs), a subset of Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks (MANETs), are wireless networks formed around moving vehicles, enabling communication between vehicles, roadside infrastructure, and servers. With the rise of autonomous and connected vehicles, security concerns surrounding VANETs have grown. VANETs still face challenges related to privacy with full-scale deployment due to a lack of user trust. Critical factors shaping VANETs include their dynamic topology and high mobility characteristics. Authentication protocols emerge as the cornerstone of enabling the secure transmission of entities within a VANET. Despite concerted efforts, there remains a need to incorporate verification approaches for refining authentication protocols. Formal verification constitutes a mathematical approach enabling developers to validate protocols and rectify design errors with precision. Therefore, this review focuses on authentication protocols as a pivotal element for securing entity transmission within VANETs. It presents a comparative analysis of existing protocols, identifies research gaps, and introduces a novel framework that incorporates formal verification and threat modeling. The review considers key factors influencing security, sheds light on ongoing challenges, and emphasises the significance of user trust. The proposed framework not only enhances VANET security but also contributes to the growing field of formal verification in the automotive domain. As the outcomes of this study, several research gaps, challenges, and future research directions are identified. These insights would offer valuable guidance for researchers to establish secure authentication communication within VANETs
Secure and robust multi-constrained QoS aware routing algorithm for VANETs
Secure QoS routing algorithms are a fundamental part of wireless networks that aim to provide services with QoS and security guarantees. In Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs), vehicles perform routing functions, and at the same time act as end-systems thus routing control messages are transmitted unprotected over wireless channels. The QoS of the entire network could be degraded by an attack on the routing process, and manipulation of the routing control messages. In this paper, we propose a novel secure and reliable multi-constrained QoS aware routing algorithm for VANETs. We employ the Ant Colony Optimisation (ACO) technique to compute feasible routes in VANETs subject to multiple QoS constraints determined by the data traffic type. Moreover, we extend the VANET-oriented Evolving Graph (VoEG) model to perform plausibility checks on the exchanged routing control messages among vehicles. Simulation results show that the QoS can be guaranteed while applying security mechanisms to ensure a reliable and robust routing service
Secure Authentication Mechanism for Cluster based Vehicular Adhoc Network (VANET): A Survey
Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) play a crucial role in Intelligent
Transportation Systems (ITS) by facilitating communication between vehicles and
infrastructure. This communication aims to enhance road safety, improve traffic
efficiency, and enhance passenger comfort. The secure and reliable exchange of
information is paramount to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of data,
while the authentication of vehicles and messages is essential to prevent
unauthorized access and malicious activities. This survey paper presents a
comprehensive analysis of existing authentication mechanisms proposed for
cluster-based VANETs. The strengths, weaknesses, and suitability of these
mechanisms for various scenarios are carefully examined. Additionally, the
integration of secure key management techniques is discussed to enhance the
overall authentication process. Cluster-based VANETs are formed by dividing the
network into smaller groups or clusters, with designated cluster heads
comprising one or more vehicles. Furthermore, this paper identifies gaps in the
existing literature through an exploration of previous surveys. Several schemes
based on different methods are critically evaluated, considering factors such
as throughput, detection rate, security, packet delivery ratio, and end-to-end
delay. To provide optimal solutions for authentication in cluster-based VANETs,
this paper highlights AI- and ML-based routing-based schemes. These approaches
leverage artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to enhance
authentication within the cluster-based VANET network. Finally, this paper
explores the open research challenges that exist in the realm of authentication
for cluster-based Vehicular Adhoc Networks, shedding light on areas that
require further investigation and development

An Efficient Authentication Protocol Based on Chebyshev Chaotic Map for Intelligent Transportation
For meeting the demands of safety, traffic management, and high mobility, vehicular adhoc network (VANET) has become a promising component for smart transportation systems. However, the wireless environment of vehicular network leads to various challenges in the communication security. Hence, several authentication schemes have previously been proposed to address VANET security issues but their procedures disregard the balance between effectiveness and security. Thus, this paper presents a new decentralized authentication protocol that relies on lightweight functions such as the Chebyshev chaotic map and logical shift operator to achieve the high mobility requirement. In order to reduce the number of messages transferred over the network, this protocol attempts to eliminate any redundant authentication steps during its authentication stage. Additionally, the new protocol solves key management problems by applying a little modification to the public key infrastructure to ignore certificates transmission over the network. The proposed design incorporates the self-authentication concept to safeguard the vehicle trip route on the road. Moreover, the performance evaluation is conducted to verify that the proposed protocol outperforms the most related scheme in terms of security and efficiency aspects. Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETS) Security: Review and Challenges
Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network (VANET) has become a popular research area as it has tremendous capacity to improve vehicle and road safety, traffic management and convenience as well as comfort to both drivers and passengers. Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) are trying to find solution to avoid accidents and control traffic. It (VANET) is a piece of critical infrastructure that boosts traffic management efficiency and road safety. At present research efforts have placed a strong significance on novel VANET architectures and design implementations. A lot of VANET research works have focused on specific areas including broadcasting, navigation, Quality of Service (QoS), and security. This survey paper sheds some light on VANETs’ vulnerabilities and attacks. It surveys and examines some recent security problems and limitations of solutions. We observed that security is the key parameter for success of any VANET applications. There are still many critical challenges that should be taken into account such as privacy preservation, productivity, and usability.
