    Synthesis of asynchronous controllers using integer linear programming

    A novel strategy for the logic synthesis of asynchronous control circuits is presented. It is based on the structural theory of Petri nets and integer linear programming. Techniques that are capable of checking implementability conditions, such as complete state coding, and deriving a gate netlist to implement the specified behavior are presented. These techniques can handle Petri net specifications consisting of several thousands of transitions and provide a significant speed-up compared with techniques that have previously been proposed.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    State-based encoding of large asynchronous controllers

    State encoding is one of the fundamental problems in the synthesis of asynchronous controllers. The requirement for a correct hazard-free implementation imposes severe constraints on the way encoding signals can be inserted in the specification of a controller. Even though some specification formalisms, such as Burst-mode machines or Signal Transition Graphs, enable to specify behaviors at the event level, the state encoding methods that provide the best good-quality solutions work at the state level. This imposes a severe limitation on the size of the controllers that can be handled by these methods. This paper proposes a method to solve the encoding problem for large asynchronous controllers using statebased methods. It is based on an iterative process of projection and re-composition that reduces the size specification by hiding signals, partially solves the encoding problem at the state level and re-composes the original specification using a synchronous product. The process iterates until all encoding conflicts have been solved. The method is proved to preserve the behavior of the specification (branching bisimilarity) and shown to be capable of providing good-quality solutions for controllers of more than 100 signals and 106 states.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    A Golden Age of Hardware Description Languages: Applying Programming Language Techniques to Improve Design Productivity

    Leading experts have declared that there is an impending golden age of computer architecture. During this age, the rate at which architects will be able to innovate will be directly tied to the design and implementation of the hardware description languages they use. Thus, the programming languages community stands on the critical path to this new golden age. This implies that we are also on the cusp of a golden age of hardware description languages. In this paper, we discuss the intellectual challenges facing researchers interested in hardware description language design, compilers, and formal methods. The major theme will be identifying opportunities to apply programming language techniques to address issues in hardware design productivity. Then, we present a vision for a multi-language system that provides a framework for developing solutions to these intellectual problems. This vision is based on a meta-programmed host language combined with a core embedded hardware description language that is used as the basis for the research and development of a sea of domain-specific languages. Central to the design of this system is the core language which is based on an abstraction that provides a general mechanism for the composition of hardware components described in any language

    There has been a resurgence of interest in asynchronous design recently. The renewed interest in asynchronous design results from its potential to address the problem faced by the synchronous design methodology. In asynchronous methodology, there is no global clock controlling the synchronization of a circuit; instead, the data communication between each functional unit is completed through local request-acknowledge handshake protocol. The growth in demand of high performance portable systems has accelerated asynchronous logic design technique which can offers better performance and lower power consumption especially in the development of the asynchronous processor for mobile and portable application. In this thesis, the design and verification of an 8-bit asynchronous pipelined processor is presented. The developed asynchronous processor is based on Harvard architecture and uses Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) instruction set architecture. 24 instructions are supported by the processor including register, memory, branch and jump operations. The processor has three-stage pipelining i.e. fetch, decode and execution pipeline. Micropipelines framework with 2-phase signalling protocol and bundled-data approach is employed in designing complex and powerful asynchronous control circuits for the processor. Very High Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language (VHDL) is used to design and construct all parts of the asynchronous processor. Simulation, synthesis and verification of the processor are carried out using MAX +PLUS II software. The simulation results have demonstrated that the developed 8-bit asynchronous RISC processor is working correctly using current Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology. This processor employed 903 logic cells and has 6144 memory bits for instruction and data memory. Each of the processor subsystem can operates at different cycle time, thus enable an asynchronous processor achieving 11.95MHz average speed performance

    Area/latency optimized early output asynchronous full adders and relative-timed ripple carry adders

    This article presents two area/latency optimized gate level asynchronous full adder designs which correspond to early output logic. The proposed full adders are constructed using the delay-insensitive dual-rail code and adhere to the four-phase return-to-zero handshaking. For an asynchronous ripple carry adder (RCA) constructed using the proposed early output full adders, the relative-timing assumption becomes necessary and the inherent advantages of the relative-timed RCA are: (1) computation with valid inputs, i.e., forward latency is data-dependent, and (2) computation with spacer inputs involves a bare minimum constant reverse latency of just one full adder delay, thus resulting in the optimal cycle time. With respect to different 32-bit RCA implementations, and in comparison with the optimized strong-indication, weak-indication, and early output full adder designs, one of the proposed early output full adders achieves respective reductions in latency by 67.8, 12.3 and 6.1 %, while the other proposed early output full adder achieves corresponding reductions in area by 32.6, 24.6 and 6.9 %, with practically no power penalty. Further, the proposed early output full adders based asynchronous RCAs enable minimum reductions in cycle time by 83.4, 15, and 8.8 % when considering carry-propagation over the entire RCA width of 32-bits, and maximum reductions in cycle time by 97.5, 27.4, and 22.4 % for the consideration of a typical carry chain length of 4 full adder stages, when compared to the least of the cycle time estimates of various strong-indication, weak-indication, and early output asynchronous RCAs of similar size. All the asynchronous full adders and RCAs were realized using standard cells in a semi-custom design fashion based on a 32/28 nm CMOS process technology

    As the demand for an energy-efficient alternative to traditional synchronous circuit design grows, hardware designers must reconsider the traditional clock tree. By doing away with the constrains of a clock, asynchronous sequential circuit designs can achieve a much greater level of efficiency. The utilization of asynchronous logic synthesis flows has enabled researchers to better implement asynchronous circuit designs which have been optimized using the same industry standard tools that are already used in sequential synchronous designs. This thesis offers a new flow for such tools which implements the MTNCL asynchronous circuit architecture
