    Quantitative Measures of Regret and Trust in Human-Robot Collaboration Systems

    Human-robot collaboration (HRC) systems integrate the strengths of both humans and robots to improve the joint system performance. In this thesis, we focus on social human-robot interaction (sHRI) factors and in particular regret and trust. Humans experience regret during decision-making under uncertainty when they feel that a better result could be obtained if chosen differently. A framework to quantitatively measure regret is proposed in this thesis. We embed quantitative regret analysis into Bayesian sequential decision-making (BSD) algorithms for HRC shared vision tasks in both domain search and assembly tasks. The BSD method has been used for robot decision-making tasks, which however is proved to be very different from human decision-making patterns. Instead, regret theory qualitatively models human\u27s rational decision-making behaviors under uncertainty. Moreover, it has been shown that joint performance of a team will improve if all members share the same decision-making logic. Trust plays a critical role in determining the level of a human\u27s acceptance and hence utilization of a robot. A dynamic network based trust model combing the time series trust model is first implemented in a multi-robot motion planning task with a human-in-the-loop. However, in this model, the trust estimates for each robot is independent, which fails to model the correlative trust in multi-robot collaboration.     Trust-Based Control of (Semi)Autonomous Mobile Robotic Systems

    Despite great achievements made in (semi)autonomous robotic systems, human participa-tion is still an essential part, especially for decision-making about the autonomy allocation of robots in complex and uncertain environments. However, human decisions may not be optimal due to limited cognitive capacities and subjective human factors. In human-robot interaction (HRI), trust is a major factor that determines humans use of autonomy. Over/under trust may lead to dispro-portionate autonomy allocation, resulting in decreased task performance and/or increased human workload. In this work, we develop automated decision-making aids utilizing computational trust models to help human operators achieve a more effective and unbiased allocation. Our proposed decision aids resemble the way that humans make an autonomy allocation decision, however, are unbiased and aim to reduce human workload, improve the overall performance, and result in higher acceptance by a human. We consider two types of autonomy control schemes for (semi)autonomous mobile robotic systems. The first type is a two-level control scheme which includes switches between either manual or autonomous control modes. For this type, we propose automated decision aids via a computational trust and self-confidence model. We provide analytical tools to investigate the steady-state effects of the proposed autonomy allocation scheme on robot performance and human workload. We also develop an autonomous decision pattern correction algorithm using a nonlinear model predictive control to help the human gradually adapt to a better allocation pattern. The second type is a mixed-initiative bilateral teleoperation control scheme which requires mixing of autonomous and manual control. For this type, we utilize computational two-way trust models. Here, mixed-initiative is enabled by scaling the manual and autonomous control inputs with a function of computational human-to-robot trust. The haptic force feedback cue sent by the robot is dynamically scaled with a function of computational robot-to-human trust to reduce humans physical workload. Using the proposed control schemes, our human-in-the-loop tests show that the trust-based automated decision aids generally improve the overall robot performance and reduce the operator workload compared to a manual allocation scheme. The proposed decision aids are also generally preferred and trusted by the participants. Finally, the trust-based control schemes are extended to the single-operator-multi-robot applications. A theoretical control framework is developed for these applications and the stability and convergence issues under the switching scheme between different robots are addressed via passivity based measures

We hope that robots will take up tedious, mundane or dirty chores and make our lives more comfortable, easy and enjoyable by providing companionship and care. However, robots may pose a threat to human privacy, safety and autonomy; therefore, it is necessary to have constant control over the developing technology to ensure the benevolent intentions and safety of autonomous systems. Building trust in (autonomous) robotic systems is thus necessary. The title of this book highlights this challenge: “Trust in robots—Trusting robots”. Herein, various notions and research areas associated with robots are unified. The theme “Trust in robots” addresses the development of technology that is trustworthy for users; “Trusting robots” focuses on building a trusting relationship with robots, furthering previous research. These themes and topics are at the core of the PhD program “Trust Robots” at TU Wien, Austria

    Human-Robot Teams – Paving the Way for the Teams of the Future

    Thanks to advances in artificial intelligence and robotics, robots, and especially social robots that can naturally interact with humans, are now found in more and more areas of our lives. At the same time, teams have been the norm in organizations for decades. To bring these two circumstances together, this dissertation addresses the use of social robots together with humans in teams, so-called human-robot teams (HRTs). This work aims to advance knowledge about HRTs and important underlying mechanisms in the establishment of such teams, thereby providing insights in two aspects. First, a structured and universal definition of HRTs is derived from the various perspectives of extant research, and based on a comprehensive literature overview, important characteristics and influencing factors of HRTs as well as research gaps in HRT research are identified. Second, insights into the underlying mechanisms of the establishment of human-robot teams are provided for settings with social robots in two different team roles: team assistant and lower-level (team) manager. For this purpose, this dissertation contains three research studies that cover the currently largely unexplored area of social robots' use in organizational teams at both the employee and lower-level manager levels. The first study (conceptual study) provides a foundation for this dissertation and beyond by developing a structured and universal definition of HRTs. It also structures extant research on HRTs and proposes an agenda for future research on HRTs based on research gaps identified in a comprehensive literature review that includes 194 studies on HRTs. The second and third studies (empirical studies 1 and 2) use empirical online studies to address two of the research gaps identified in the conceptual study. They examine the underlying mechanisms in decisions for social robots in two different team roles: team assistant (empirical study 1) and team manager (empirical study 2). By looking at expectations and experiences of taskwork-/performance-related and teamwork-related/relational features of social robots using polynomial regressions and response surface analyses, these studies rely on expectation disconfirmation theory to provide a detailed investigation of the underlying mechanisms of organizational decisions for social robots. Empirical study 1 thereby shows that for teamwork, positive disconfirmation and high levels of experiences lead to higher acceptance of humanoid and android robotic team assistants, and similar results emerge for a humanoid robot’s taskwork skills. In contrast, for taskwork skills of android team assistants, high levels of positive disconfirmation lead to lower robot acceptance. For robotic lower-level managers, empirical study 2 shows that there are discrepancies in the evaluation of performance-related usefulness and relational attitude. While for usefulness a slight overfulfilment of expectations leads to a positive impact on the readiness to work with, before evaluations decrease with greater overfulfillment, for attitude increasing positive experiences are associated with (decreasing) positive evaluations of readiness. In summary, this dissertation contributes to scientific research on HRTs by advancing the understanding of HRTs, providing a structured and universal definition of HRTs, and suggesting avenues for future research. The systematic investigation of underlying mechanisms for the selection of different types of social robots for different team roles provides a holistic view of this new form of organizational teams. In addition to the research contributions, this thesis also provides practical guidance for the successful establishment of HRTs in organizations

    Organization based multiagent architecture for distributed environments

    [EN]Distributed environments represent a complex field in which applied solutions should be flexible and include significant adaptation capabilities. These environments are related to problems where multiple users and devices may interact, and where simple and local solutions could possibly generate good results, but may not be effective with regards to use and interaction. There are many techniques that can be employed to face this kind of problems, from CORBA to multi-agent systems, passing by web-services and SOA, among others. All those methodologies have their advantages and disadvantages that are properly analyzed in this documents, to finally explain the new architecture presented as a solution for distributed environment problems. The new architecture for solving complex solutions in distributed environments presented here is called OBaMADE: Organization Based Multiagent Architecture for Distributed Environments. It is a multiagent architecture based on the organizations of agents paradigm, where the agents in the architecture are structured into organizations to improve their organizational capabilities. The reasoning power of the architecture is based on the Case-Based Reasoning methology, being implemented in a internal organization that uses agents to create services to solve the external request made by the users. The OBaMADE architecture has been successfully applied to two different case studies where its prediction capabilities have been properly checked. Those case studies have showed optimistic results and, being complex systems, have demonstrated the abstraction and generalizations capabilities of the architecture. Nevertheless OBaMADE is intended to be able to solve much other kind of problems in distributed environments scenarios. It should be applied to other varieties of situations and to other knowledge fields to fully develop its potencial.[ES]Los entornos distribuidos representan un campo de conocimiento complejo en el que las soluciones a aplicar deben ser flexibles y deben contar con gran capacidad de adaptación. Este tipo de entornos está normalmente relacionado con problemas donde varios usuarios y dispositivos entran en juego. Para solucionar dichos problemas, pueden utilizarse sistemas locales que, aunque ofrezcan buenos resultados en términos de calidad de los mismos, no son tan efectivos en cuanto a la interacción y posibilidades de uso. Existen múltiples técnicas que pueden ser empleadas para resolver este tipo de problemas, desde CORBA a sistemas multiagente, pasando por servicios web y SOA, entre otros. Todas estas mitologías tienen sus ventajas e inconvenientes, que se analizan en este documento, para explicar, finalmente, la nueva arquitectura presentada como una solución para los problemas generados en entornos distribuidos. La nueva arquitectura aquí se llama OBaMADE, que es el acrónimo del inglés Organization Based Multiagent Architecture for Distributed Environments (Arquitectura Multiagente Basada en Organizaciones para Entornos Distribuidos). Se trata de una arquitectura multiagente basasa en el paradigma de las organizaciones de agente, donde los agentes que forman parte de la arquitectura se estructuran en organizaciones para mejorar sus capacidades organizativas. La capacidad de razonamiento de la arquitectura está basada en la metodología de razonamiento basado en casos, que se ha implementado en una de las organizaciones internas de la arquitectura por medio de agentes que crean servicios que responden a las solicitudes externas de los usuarios. La arquitectura OBaMADE se ha aplicado de forma exitosa a dos casos de estudio diferentes, en los que se han demostrado sus capacidades predictivas. Aplicando OBaMADE a estos casos de estudio se han obtenido resultados esperanzadores y, al ser sistemas complejos, se han demostrado las capacidades tanto de abstracción como de generalización de la arquitectura presentada. Sin embargo, esta arquitectura está diseñada para poder ser aplicada a más tipo de problemas de entornos distribuidos. Debe ser aplicada a más variadas situaciones y a otros campos de conocimiento para desarrollar completamente el potencial de esta arquitectura
