    NetGPT: A Native-AI Network Architecture Beyond Provisioning Personalized Generative Services

    Large language models (LLMs) have triggered tremendous success to empower daily life by generative information, and the personalization of LLMs could further contribute to their applications due to better alignment with human intents. Towards personalized generative services, a collaborative cloud-edge methodology sounds promising, as it facilitates the effective orchestration of heterogeneous distributed communication and computing resources. In this article, after discussing the pros and cons of several candidate cloud-edge collaboration techniques, we put forward NetGPT to capably deploy appropriate LLMs at the edge and the cloud in accordance with their computing capacity. In addition, edge LLMs could efficiently leverage location-based information for personalized prompt completion, thus benefiting the interaction with cloud LLMs. After deploying representative open-source LLMs (e.g., GPT-2-base and LLaMA model) at the edge and the cloud, we present the feasibility of NetGPT on the basis of low-rank adaptation-based light-weight fine-tuning. Subsequently, we highlight substantial essential changes required for a native artificial intelligence (AI) network architecture towards NetGPT, with special emphasis on deeper integration of communications and computing resources and careful calibration of logical AI workflow. Furthermore, we demonstrate several by-product benefits of NetGPT, given edge LLM's astonishing capability to predict trends and infer intents, which possibly leads to a unified solution for intelligent network management \& orchestration. In a nutshell, we argue that NetGPT is a promising native-AI network architecture beyond provisioning personalized generative services

    Architecture and Prototype of a Real-Time Processor Farm Running at 1 MHz

    The Level-1 trigger of the LHCb experiment is a hardware/software based system built around standard components whenever possible. The trigger is the second stage in the LHCb trigger pipeline having an average input of 1 MHz and a bandwidth requirement of more than 4 GByte/s. The input data is initially split amongst several input feeds with sub-events being as small as 128 Byte. The system uses a high-speed network available off-the-shelf which connects commodity PCs. The interface to the NIC is PCI. The thesis gives an overview of the different networking requirements that have to be met to satisfy the LHCb boundary conditions. The requirements of the project do not allow to use common data transfer methods. However, based on a shared memory architecture a new method of transferring data is introduced. The method uses additional reconfigurable logic which allows to send data in bursts over the PCI bus directly into the network inducing almost no overhead. Based on the Scalable Coherent Interface, tests concerning speed, throughput, latency, and scalability are presented. Based on the latest simulation results done at CERN, an approximate system size is calculated and a basic timing analysis of the system is given. The system is characterized by multiple nodes sending to one single receiver. Therefore, the Level-1 trigger is prone to network congestion since the receiving node can not handle the aggregate input data rate. However, a hardware based data scheduling mechanism, the TagNet, is introduced which avoids congestion in the system. A 30 node prototype is presented which has been built around Linux PCs connected by an SCI network. The system is able to process data with a MHz rate. Sub-events have been chosen to be as small as 128 Byte. Data transfer has been scheduled by a basic implementation of the TagNet. The system has been used to prove basic functionality and to measure important input parameters concerning the system

    Internet of Things and Intelligent Technologies for Efficient Energy Management in a Smart Building Environment

    Internet of Things (IoT) is attempting to transform modern buildings into energy efficient, smart, and connected buildings, by imparting capabilities such as real-time monitoring, situational awareness and intelligence, and intelligent control. Digitizing the modern day building environment using IoT improves asset visibility and generates energy savings. This dissertation provides a survey of the role, impact, and challenges and recommended solutions of IoT for smart buildings. It also presents an IoT-based solution to overcome the challenge of inefficient energy management in a smart building environment. The proposed solution consists of developing an Intelligent Computational Engine (ICE), composed of various IoT devices and technologies for efficient energy management in an IoT driven building environment. ICE’s capabilities viz. energy consumption prediction and optimized control of electric loads have been developed, deployed, and dispatched in the Real-Time Power and Intelligent Systems (RTPIS) laboratory, which serves as the IoT-driven building case study environment. Two energy consumption prediction models viz. exponential model and Elman recurrent neural network (RNN) model were developed and compared to determine the most accurate model for use in the development of ICE’s energy consumption prediction capability. ICE’s prediction model was developed in MATLAB using cellular computational network (CCN) technique, whereas the optimized control model was developed jointly in MATLAB and Metasys Building Automation System (BAS) using particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and logic connector tool (LCT), respectively. It was demonstrated that the developed CCN-based energy consumption prediction model was highly accurate with low error % by comparing the predicted and the measured energy consumption data over a period of one week. The predicted energy consumption values generated from the CCN model served as a reference for the PSO algorithm to generate control parameters for the optimized control of the electric loads. The LCT model used these control parameters to regulate the electric loads to save energy (increase energy efficiency) without violating any operational constraints. Having ICE’s energy consumption prediction and optimized control of electric loads capabilities is extremely useful for efficient energy management as they ensure that sufficient energy is generated to meet the demands of the electric loads optimally at any time thereby reducing wasted energy due to excess generation. This, in turn, reduces carbon emissions and generates energy and cost savings. While the ICE was tested in a small case-study environment, it could be scaled to any smart building environment

    An architecture for an ATM network continuous media server exploiting temporal locality of access

    With the continuing drop in the price of memory, Video-on-Demand (VoD) solutions that have so far focused on maximising the throughput of disk units with a minimal use of physical memory may now employ significant amounts of cache memory. The subject of this thesis is the study of a technique to best utilise a memory buffer within such a VoD solution. In particular, knowledge of the streams active on the server is used to allocate cache memory. Stream optimised caching exploits reuse of data among streams that are temporally close to each other within the same clip; the data fetched on behalf of the leading stream may be cached and reused by the following streams. Therefore, only the leading stream requires access to the physical disk and the potential level of service provision allowed by the server may be increased. The use of stream optimised caching may consequently be limited to environments where reuse of data is significant. As such, the technique examined within this thesis focuses on a classroom environment where user progress is generally linear and all users progress at approximately the same rate for such an environment, reuse of data is guaranteed. The analysis of stream optimised caching begins with a detailed theoretical discussion of the technique and suggests possible implementations. Later chapters describe both the design and construction of a prototype server that employs the caching technique, and experiments that use of the prototype to assess the effectiveness of the technique for the chosen environment using `emulated' users. The conclusions of these experiments indicate that stream optimised caching may be applicable to larger scale VoD systems than small scale teaching environments. Future development of stream optimised caching is considered

    A survey on vehicular communication for cooperative truck platooning application

    Platooning is an application where a group of vehicles move one after each other in close proximity, acting jointly as a single physical system. The scope of platooning is to improve safety, reduce fuel consumption, and increase road use efficiency. Even if conceived several decades ago as a concept, based on the new progress in automation and vehicular networking platooning has attracted particular attention in the latest years and is expected to become of common implementation in the next future, at least for trucks.The platoon system is the result of a combination of multiple disciplines, from transportation, to automation, to electronics, to telecommunications. In this survey, we consider the platooning, and more specifically the platooning of trucks, from the point of view of wireless communications. Wireless communications are indeed a key element, since they allow the information to propagate within the convoy with an almost negligible delay and really making all vehicles acting as one. Scope of this paper is to present a comprehensive survey on connected vehicles for the platooning application, starting with an overview of the projects that are driving the development of this technology, followed by a brief overview of the current and upcoming vehicular networking architecture and standards, by a review of the main open issues related to wireless communications applied to platooning, and a discussion of security threats and privacy concerns. The survey will conclude with a discussion of the main areas that we consider still open and that can drive future research directions.(c) 2022 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Inc.
