    PVC gel based artificial muscles: Characterizations and actuation modular constructions

    Polymer materials based artificial muscles have the properties of being soft, lightweight, and flexible which are similar to the nature muscular actuators. In our previous study, we have developed a contraction type artificial muscle based on plasticized poly vinyl chloride (PVC) gel and meshed electrodes. And we have improved the characteristics to make it close to the level of natural muscle. It has many positive characteristics, such as stable actuation in the air, high output, notable response rate, and low power consumption. So a wide application is expected. However, for practical applications, it is necessary to consider some specific criteria, such as performance criteria and structural criteria. In this study, we introduced the most updated properties of PVC gel artificial muscles and proposed three types of mechanical actuation modular constructions for making the PVC gel artificial muscle as a robust actuation device for robotics and mechatronics. And we tested a prototype to examine the effectiveness of the proposed modules. Finally, an analytical model for the static characteristics of PVC gel artificial muscles at different applied voltages was derived and showed good agreement with experimental results measured by a prototype of modules.     Human-centered Electric Prosthetic (HELP) Hand

    In developing countries such as India, there is a higher rate of amputations among the population but a lack of viable, low cost solutions. Through a partnership with Indian non-profit Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), the team designed a functional, robust, and low cost electrically powered prosthetic hand that communicates with people with unilateral, transradial amputations in urban India through a biointerface. The device uses compliant tendon actuation, small linear servos, and a wearable sleeve outfitted with electromyography (EMG) sensors to produce a device that, once placed inside a prosthetic glove, is anthropomorphic in both look and feel. The hand is capable of forming three grips through the use of a manually adjustable opposable thumb: the key, pinch, and wrap grips. The hand also provides vibrotactile user feedback upon completion of a grip. The design includes a prosthetic gel liner to provide a layer of cushion and comfort for safe use by the user. These results show that it is possible to create a low cost, electrically powered prosthetic hand for users in developing countries without sacrificing functionality. In order for this design to be truly adjustable to each user, the creation of an easily navigable graphical user interface (GUI) will have to be a future goal. The prosthesis prototype was developed such that future groups can design for manufacturing and distribution in India

    Fall prevention strategy for an active orthotic system

    Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Engenharia Biomédica (especialização em Eletrónica Médica)Todos os anos, são reportadas cerca de 684,000 quedas fatais e 37.3 milhões de quedas não fatais que requerem atenção médica, afetando principalmente a população idosa. Assim, é necessário identificar eficientemente indivíduos com alto risco de queda, a partir da população alvo idosa, e prepará los para superar perturbações da marcha inesperadas. Uma estratégia de prevenção de queda capaz de eficientemente e atempadamente detetar e contrariar os eventos de perdas de equilíbrio (PDE) mais frequentes pode reduzir o risco de queda. Como slips foram identificados como a causa mais prevalente de quedas, estes eventos devem ser abordados como foco principal da estratégia. No entanto, há falta de estratégias de prevenção de quedas por slip. Esta dissertação tem como objetivo o design de uma estratégia de prevenção de quedas de slips baseada na conceção das etapas de atuação e deteção. A estratégia de atuação foi delineada com base na resposta biomecânica humana a slips, onde o joelho da perna perturbada (leading) apresenta um papel proeminente para contrariar LOBs induzidas por slips. Quando uma slip é detetada, a estratégia destaca uma ortótese de joelho que providencia um torque assisstivo para prevenir a queda. A estratégia de deteção considerou as propriedades atrativas dos controladores Central Pattern Generator (CPG) para prever parâmetros da marcha. Algoritmos baseados em threshold monitorizam o erro de previsão do CPG, que aumenta após uma perturbação inesperada na marcha, para a deteção de slips. O ângulo do joelho e a velocidade angular da canela foram selecionados como os parâmetros de monitorização da marcha. Um protocolo experimental concebido para provocar perturbações de slip a sujeitos humanos permitiu a recolha de dados destas variáveis para posteriormente validar o algoritmo de deteção de perturbações. Algoritmos CPG foram capazes de produzir aproximações aceitáveis dos sinais de marcha em estado estacionário do ângulo do joelho e da velocidade angular da canela com sucesso. Além disso, o algoritmo de threshold adaptativo detetou LOBs induzidas por slips eficientemente. A melhor performance global foi obtida usando este algoritmo para monitorizar o ângulo do joelho, que detetou quase 80% (78.261%) do total de perturbações com um tempo médio de deteção (TMD) de 250 ms. Além disso, uma média de 0.652 falsas perturbações foram detetadas por cada perturbação corretamente identificada. Estes resultados sugerem uma performance aceitável de deteção de perturbações do algoritmo, de acordo com os requisitos especificados para a deteção.Every year, an estimated 684,000 fatal falls and 37.3 million non-fatal falls requiring medical attention are reported, mostly affecting the older population. Thus, it is necessary to effectively screen high fall risk individuals from targeted elderly populations and prepare them to successfully overcome unexpected gait perturbations. A fall prevention strategy capable of effectively and timely detect and counteract the most frequent loss of balance (LOB) events may reduce the fall risk. Since slips were identified as the main contributors to falls, these events should be addressed as a main focus of the strategy. Nonetheless, there is a lack of slip-induced fall prevention strategies. This dissertation aims the design of a slip-related fall prevention strategy based on the conception of an actuation and a detection stage. The actuation strategy was delineated based on the human biomechanical reactions to slips, where the perturbed (leading) leg’s knee joint presents a prominent role to counteract slip-induced LOBs. Thereby, upon the detection of a slip, this strategy highlighted a knee orthotic device that provides an assistive torque to prevent the falls. The detection strategy considered the attractive properties of biological-inspired Central Pattern Generator (CPG) controllers to predict gait parameters. Threshold-based algorithms monitored the CPG’s prediction error produced, which increases upon an unexpected gait perturbation, to perform slip detection. The knee angle and shank angular velocity were selected as the monitoring gait parameters. An experimental protocol designed to provoke slip perturbations to human subjects allowed to collect data from these variables to further validate the perturbation detection algorithm. CPG algorithms were able to successfully produce acceptable estimations of the knee angle and shank angular velocity signals during steady-state walking. Furthermore, an adaptive threshold algorithm effectively detected slip-induced LOBs. The best overall performance was obtained using this algorithm to monitor the knee angle from the perturbed leg, which detected almost 80% (78.261%) of the total perturbations with a mean detection time (MDT) of 250 ms. In addition, a mean of 0.652 false perturbations were detected for each correct perturbation identified. These results suggest an acceptable perturbation detection performance of the algorithm implemented in light of the detection requirements specified

    Advanced Signal Processing in Wearable Sensors for Health Monitoring

    Smart, wearables devices on a miniature scale are becoming increasingly widely available, typically in the form of smart watches and other connected devices. Consequently, devices to assist in measurements such as electroencephalography (EEG), electrocardiogram (ECG), electromyography (EMG), blood pressure (BP), photoplethysmography (PPG), heart rhythm, respiration rate, apnoea, and motion detection are becoming more available, and play a significant role in healthcare monitoring. The industry is placing great emphasis on making these devices and technologies available on smart devices such as phones and watches. Such measurements are clinically and scientifically useful for real-time monitoring, long-term care, and diagnosis and therapeutic techniques. However, a pertaining issue is that recorded data are usually noisy, contain many artefacts, and are affected by external factors such as movements and physical conditions. In order to obtain accurate and meaningful indicators, the signal has to be processed and conditioned such that the measurements are accurate and free from noise and disturbances. In this context, many researchers have utilized recent technological advances in wearable sensors and signal processing to develop smart and accurate wearable devices for clinical applications. The processing and analysis of physiological signals is a key issue for these smart wearable devices. Consequently, ongoing work in this field of study includes research on filtration, quality checking, signal transformation and decomposition, feature extraction and, most recently, machine learning-based methods

    Investigation into the need for Additive Manufacturing personalisation of handheld assistive devices

    As people become older, they are prone to suffer physical and cognitive deterioration due to diseases and the ageing process itself. These disabilities affect their daily activities but the usage of an assistive device may provide the necessary support and increase their quality of life. However, sometimes these products do not provide a solution to everybody, as they are standard versions offering the same characteristics to all users; for this reason, it is useful to think about the production of personalised options that could solve particular needs. The creation and built of tailored devices may have as a result a better match between the user and the product, improving their fit and performance; these characteristics can be achieved via additive manufacturing since this technology is able to produce cost-effective and complex organic forms adapted to a user. This study has the aim of assessing the potential of additive manufacturing in the production of personalised assistive devices, evaluating whether it is worth or not use this technology to personalise assistive products. Through a combination of literature searching and focus group sessions, a walking stick handle was identified as a suitable case study device which would have the potential to impact a high number of people across a range of illnesses associated with ageing. This study has shown, via user trials, that an ergonomic shape as opposed to the more traditional “crook” style, was a preferred option because its form adapts better for the user’s hand, there is more support due to its wider surface and pressure is exerted over the whole hand; also, it could provide a more comfortable position for hand and wrist. Most users also preferred some kind of additional texturing on the handle because they could provide a degree of roughness to the surface, causing an anti-slippery effect and providing a better grip, but the exact texture they preferred varied between users. This suggests that there may be a benefit to allowing users a choice of different textures at the point of purchase. Personalisation of an ergonomic-shaped handle did not appear to provide a significant benefit, with participants generally preferring the standard shape. This suggests that (for the majority of people) the overall shape may have more of an influence on the user’s preference than any small changes to enable conformance to the individual. However, further work is needed to define a suitable and accurate method of capturing user data in cases where personalisation may be more relevant, for example, where someone has a disability that affects their ability to grab the handle

    Doutoramento em Engenharia MecânicaO presente trabalho teve como objetivo principal estudar o comportamento mecânico do disco intervertebral recorrendo a sensores em fibra ótica. Na expetativa de efetuar o melhor enquadramento do tema foi efetuada uma revisão exaustiva das várias configurações de sensores em fibra ótica que têm vindo a ser utilizadas em aplicações biomédicas e biomecânicas, nomeadamente para medição de temperatura, deformação, força e pressão. Nesse âmbito, procurou-se destacar as potencialidades dos sensores em fibra ótica e apresentá-los como uma tecnologia alternativa ou até de substituição das tecnologias associadas a sensores convencionais. Tendo em vista a aplicação de sensores em fibra ótica no estudo do comportamento do disco intervertebral efetuou-se também uma revisão exaustiva da coluna vertebral e, particularmente, do conceito de unidade funcional. A par de uma descrição anatómica e funcional centrada no disco intervertebral, vértebras adjacentes e ligamentos espinais foram ainda destacadas as suas propriedades mecânicas e descritos os procedimentos mais usuais no estudo dessas propriedades. A componente experimental do presente trabalho descreve um conjunto de experiências efetuadas com unidades funcionais cadavéricas utilizando sensores convencionais e sensores em fibra ótica com vista à medição da deformação do disco intervertebral sob cargas compressivas uniaxiais. Inclui ainda a medição in vivo da pressão intradiscal num disco lombar de uma ovelha sob efeito de anestesia. Para esse efeito utilizou-se um sensor comercial em fibra ótica e desenvolveu-se a respetiva unidade de interrogação. Finalmente apresenta-se os resultados da investigação em curso que tem como objetivo propor e desenvolver protótipos de sensores em fibra ótica para aplicações biomédicas e biomecânicas. Nesse sentido, são apresentadas duas soluções de sensores interferométricos para medição da pressão em fluídos corporais.The present work aimed to study the mechanical behavior of the intervertebral disc using fiber optic sensors. To address the theme an exhaustive review of the various configurations of fiber optic sensors that have been used in biomechanical and biomedical applications, in particular for measuring temperature, strain, force and pressure, was conducted. In this context, an effort was made to highlight the advantages of fiber optic sensors and present them as an alternative or even a substitution technology to conventional sensors. In view of the application of fiber optic sensors to study intervertebral disc behavior an exhaustive review of the spine and, particularly, of the spinal motion segment was made. Along with an anatomical and functional description of the intervertebral disc, the adjacent vertebrae and spinal ligaments, their mechanical properties were also highlighted as well as the most common procedures and guidelines followed in the study of these properties. The experimental section of the present work describes a set of tests performed with cadaveric spinal motion segments using conventional and fiber optic sensors to assess strain of the intervertebral disc under uniaxial compressive loads. This section also includes an experience reporting in vivo pressures measured in the lumbar disc of a sheep under general anesthesia. In this case, a commercial fiber optic sensor and a purpose-built interrogation unit were used. Finally, the results of ongoing research aiming to develop fiber optic sensors prototypes for biomedical and biomechanical applications are presented.
