Combined Coverage Area Reporting and Geographical Routing in Wireless Sensor-Actuator Networks for Cooperating with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
In wireless sensor network (WSN) applications with multiple gateways, it is key to route location dependent subscriptions efficiently at two levels in the system. At the gateway level, data sinks must not waste the energy of the WSN by injecting subscriptions that are not relevant for the nodes in their coverage area and at WSN level, energy-efficient delivery of subscriptions to target areas is required. In this paper, we propose a mechanism in which (1) the WSN provides an accurate and up-to-date coverage area description to gateways and (2) the wireless sensor network re-uses the collected coverage area information to enable efficient geographical routing of location dependent subscriptions and other messages. The latter has a focus on routing of messages injected from sink nodes to nodes in the region of interest. Our proposed mechanisms are evaluated in simulation
An Optimization Based Design for Integrated Dependable Real-Time Embedded Systems
Moving from the traditional federated design paradigm, integration of mixedcriticality software components onto common computing platforms is increasingly being adopted by automotive, avionics and the control industry. This method faces new challenges such as the integration of varied functionalities (dependability, responsiveness, power consumption, etc.) under platform resource constraints and the prevention of error propagation. Based on model driven architecture and platform based design’s principles, we present a systematic mapping process for such integration adhering a transformation based design methodology. Our aim is to convert/transform initial platform independent application specifications into post integration platform specific models. In this paper, a heuristic based resource allocation approach is depicted for the consolidated mapping of safety critical and non-safety critical applications onto a common computing platform meeting particularly dependability/fault-tolerance and real-time requirements. We develop a supporting tool suite for the proposed framework, where VIATRA (VIsual Automated model TRAnsformations) is used as a transformation tool at different design steps. We validate the process and provide experimental results to show the effectiveness, performance and robustness of the approach
4Sensing - decentralized processing for participatory sensing data

It leverages the growing adoption of mobile phones equipped with sensors, such as camera, GPS and accelerometer, enabling users to collect and aggregate data, covering a wide area without incurring in the costs associated with a large-scale sensor network.
Related research in participatory sensing usually proposes an architecture based on a centralized back-end. Centralized solutions raise a set of issues. On one side, there is the implications of having a centralized repository hosting privacy sensitive information. On the other side, this
centralized model has financial costs that can discourage grassroots initiatives.
This dissertation focuses on the data management aspects of a decentralized infrastructure for the support of participatory sensing applications, leveraging the body of work on participatory
sensing and related areas, such as wireless and internet-wide sensor networks, peer-to-peer data management and stream processing. It proposes a framework covering a common set of data management requirements - from data acquisition, to processing, storage and querying - with the goal of lowering the barrier for the development and deployment of applications.
Alternative architectural approaches - RTree, QTree and NTree - are proposed and evaluated experimentally in the context of a case-study application - SpeedSense - supporting the monitoring and prediction of traffic conditions, through the collection of speed and location samples in an urban setting, using GPS equipped mobile phones
Dynamic distributed clustering in wireless sensor networks via Voronoi tessellation control
This paper presents two dynamic and distributed clustering algorithms for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Clustering approaches are used in WSNs to improve the network lifetime and scalability by balancing the workload among the clusters. Each cluster is managed by a cluster head (CH) node. The first algorithm requires the CH nodes to be mobile: by dynamically varying the CH node positions, the algorithm is proved to converge to a specific partition of the mission area, the generalised Voronoi tessellation, in which the loads of the CH nodes are balanced. Conversely, if the CH nodes are fixed, a weighted Voronoi clustering approach is proposed with the same load-balancing objective: a reinforcement learning approach is used to dynamically vary the mission space partition by controlling the weights of the Voronoi regions. Latency-Sensitive 5G RAN Slicing for Industry 4.0
Network slicing is a novel 5G paradigm that exploits the virtualization and softwarization of
networks to create different logical network instances over a common network infrastructure. Each instance
is tailored for specific Quality of Service (QoS) profiles so that network slicing can simultaneously support
several services with diverse requirements. Network slicing can be applied at the Core Network or at the
Radio Access Network (RAN). RAN slicing is particularly relevant to support latency-sensitive or timecritical
applications since the RAN accounts for a significant part of the end-to-end transmission latency. In
this context, this study proposes a novel latency-sensitive 5G RAN slicing solution. The proposal includes
schemes to design slices and partition (or allocate) radio resources among slices. These schemes are
designed with the objective to satisfy both the rate and latency demands of diverse applications. In
particular, this study considers applications with deterministic aperiodic, deterministic periodic and nondeterministic
traffic. The latency-sensitive 5G RAN slicing proposal is evaluated in Industry 4.0 scenarios
where stringent and/or deterministic latency requirements are common. However, it can be evolved to

Cross-layer design of multi-hop wireless networks
MULTI -hop wireless networks are usually defined as a collection of nodes
equipped with radio transmitters, which not only have the capability to
communicate each other in a multi-hop fashion, but also to route each others’ data
packets. The distributed nature of such networks makes them suitable for a variety of
applications where there are no assumed reliable central entities, or controllers, and
may significantly improve the scalability issues of conventional single-hop wireless
networks.
This Ph.D. dissertation mainly investigates two aspects of the research issues
related to the efficient multi-hop wireless networks design, namely: (a) network
protocols and (b) network management, both in cross-layer design paradigms to
ensure the notion of service quality, such as quality of service (QoS) in wireless mesh
networks (WMNs) for backhaul applications and quality of information (QoI) in
wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for sensing tasks. Throughout the presentation of
this Ph.D. dissertation, different network settings are used as illustrative examples,
however the proposed algorithms, methodologies, protocols, and models are not
restricted in the considered networks, but rather have wide applicability.
First, this dissertation proposes a cross-layer design framework integrating
a distributed proportional-fair scheduler and a QoS routing algorithm, while using
WMNs as an illustrative example. The proposed approach has significant performance
gain compared with other network protocols. Second, this dissertation proposes
a generic admission control methodology for any packet network, wired and
wireless, by modeling the network as a black box, and using a generic mathematical

function and Taylor expansion to capture the admission impact. Third, this dissertation
further enhances the previous designs by proposing a negotiation process,
to bridge the applications’ service quality demands and the resource management,
while using WSNs as an illustrative example. This approach allows the negotiation
among different service classes and WSN resource allocations to reach the optimal
operational status. Finally, the guarantees of the service quality are extended to
the environment of multiple, disconnected, mobile subnetworks, where the question
of how to maintain communications using dynamically controlled, unmanned data
ferries is investigated
Parallel and Distributed Simulation from Many Cores to the Public Cloud (Extended Version)
In this tutorial paper, we will firstly review some basic simulation concepts
and then introduce the parallel and distributed simulation techniques in view
of some new challenges of today and tomorrow. More in particular, in the last
years there has been a wide diffusion of many cores architectures and we can
expect this trend to continue. On the other hand, the success of cloud
computing is strongly promoting the everything as a service paradigm. Is
parallel and distributed simulation ready for these new challenges? The current
approaches present many limitations in terms of usability and adaptivity: there
is a strong need for new evaluation metrics and for revising the currently
implemented mechanisms. In the last part of the paper, we propose a new
approach based on multi-agent systems for the simulation of complex systems. It
is possible to implement advanced techniques such as the migration of simulated
entities in order to build mechanisms that are both adaptive and very easy to
use. Adaptive mechanisms are able to significantly reduce the communication
cost in the parallel/distributed architectures, to implement load-balance
techniques and to cope with execution environments that are both variable and
dynamic. Finally, such mechanisms will be used to build simulations on top of
