    Suppression of common-mode voltage in a PWM rectifier/inverter system

    This paper proposes a PWM rectifier/inverter system capable of suppressing not only supply harmonic currents but also electromagnetic interference (EMI). An active common-noise canceler (ACC) developed for this system is characterized by sophisticated connection of a common-mode transformer which can compensate for common-mode voltages produced by both PWM rectifier and inverter. As a result, the size of the common-mode transformer can be reduced to 1/3, compared with the previously proposed ACC.     Performance of common-mode chokes

    A low-cost method for experimental investigation of common-mode chokes for reducing high-frequency motor ground-currents of inverter-based drive systems of several hundred kW is presented. It provides a powerful tool during the design stage of such chokes to verify their predicted performance. The method draws from the mainly capacitive behavior of machines at very high frequencies. Results of experimental tests for drives with peak ground-current amplitudes of more than 60 Amperes, carried out on a 4 kW test-bed, are presented. They confirm the feasibility of such tests as well as the capability of small, inexpensive, single-turn chokes to effectively reduce the ground-current

    The scope of Session 2 (S2) has been defined as follows by the Session Advisory Group and the Technical Committee: Power Quality (PQ), with the more general concept of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and with some related safety problems in electricity distribution systems. Special focus is put on voltage continuity (supply reliability, problem of outages) and voltage quality (voltage level, flicker, unbalance, harmonics). This session will also look at electromagnetic compatibility (mains frequency to 150 kHz), electromagnetic interferences and electric and magnetic fields issues. Also addressed in this session are electrical safety and immunity concerns (lightning issues, step, touch and transferred voltages). The aim of this special report is to present a synthesis of the present concerns in PQ&EMC, based on all selected papers of session 2 and related papers from other sessions, (152 papers in total).     Characterization and Modeling of High Power Microwave Effects in CMOS Microelectronics

    The intentional use of high power microwave (HPM) signals to disrupt microelectronic systems is a substantial threat to vital infrastructure. Conventional methods to assess HPM threats involve empirical testing of electronic equipment, which provides no insight into fundamental mechanisms of HPM induced upset. The work presented in this dissertation is part of a broad effort to develop more effective means for HPM threat assessment. Comprehensive experimental evaluation of CMOS digital electronics was performed to provide critical information of the elementary mechanisms that govern the dynamics of HPM effects. Results show that electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection devices play a significant role in the behavior of circuits irradiated by HPM pulses. The PN junctions of the ESD protection devices distort HPM waveforms producing DC voltages at the input of the core logic elements, which produces output bit errors and abnormal circuit power dissipation. The dynamic capacitance of these devices combines with linear parasitic elements to create resonant structures that produce nonlinear circuit dynamics such as spurious oscillations. The insight into the fundamental mechanisms this research has revealed will contribute substantially to the broader effort aimed at identifying and mitigating susceptibilities in critical systems. Also presented in this work is a modeling technique based on scalable analytical circuit models that accounts for the non-quasi-static behavior of the ESD protection PN junctions. The results of circuit simulations employing these device models are in excellent agreement with experimental measurements, and are capable of predicting the threshold of effect for HPM driven non-linear circuit dynamics. For the first time, a deterministic method of evaluating HPM effects based on physical, scalable device parameters has been demonstrated. The modeling presented in this dissertation can be easily integrated into design cycles and will greatly aid the development of electronic systems with improved HPM immunity

    New Modulation Technique to Mitigate Common Mode Voltage Effects in Star-Connected Five-Phase AC Drives

    Star-connected multiphase AC drives are being considered for electromovility applications such as electromechanical actuators (EMA), where high power density and fault tolerance is demanded. As for three-phase systems, common-mode voltage (CMV) is an issue for multiphase drives. CMV leads to shaft voltages between rotor and stator windings, generating bearing currents which accelerate bearing degradation and produce high electromagnetic interferences (EMI). CMV effects can be mitigated by using appropriate modulation techniques. Thus, this work proposes a new Hybrid PWM algorithm that effectively reduces CMV in five-phase AC electric drives, improving their reliability. All the mathematical background required to understand the proposal, i.e., vector transformations, vector sequences and calculation of analytical expressions for duty cycle determination are detailed. Additionally, practical details that simplify the implementation of the proposal in an FPGA are also included. This technique, HAZSL5M5-PWM, extends the linear range of the AZSL5M5-PWM modulation, providing a full linear range.     Boost converter fed high performance BLDC drive for solar PV array powered air cooling system

    This paper proposes the utilization of a DC-DC boost converter as a mediator between a Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) array and the Voltage Source Inverters (VSI) in an SPV array powered air cooling system to attain maximum efficiency. The boost converter, over the various common DC-DC converters, offers many advantages in SPV based applications. Further, two Brushless DC (BLDC) motors are employed in the proposed air cooling system: one to run the centrifugal water pump and the other to run a fan-blower. Employing a BLDC motor is found to be the best option because of its top efficiency, supreme reliability and better performance over a wide range of speeds. The air cooling system is developed and simulated using the MATLAB/Simulink environment considering the steady state variation in the solar irradiance. Further, the efficiency of BLDC drive system is compared with a conventional Permanent Magnet DC (PMDC) motor drive system and from the simulated results it is found that the proposed system performs better

    Modelling and simulation of conducted emissions in the powertrain of electric vehicles

    In the general framework of intelligent transportation, the increasing use of information communication technology in full or hybrid electric vehicles requires careful assessment of electromagnetic compatibility, with specific reference to the conducted emissions (CE) generated by the inverter in a broad frequency range (10 kHz-100 MHz). To this aim, this work reports a modelling approach for the prediction of CE in electric powertrains, which is based on circuit representation of each single subsystem, that is, the battery, the inverter, the three-phase synchronous motor, and the power buses composed of shielded cables. The proposed models are able to represent both low-frequency functional aspects and high-frequency parasitic effects of paramount importance for CE analysis, and can be implemented into a Simulation-Programme-with-Integrated-Circuit-Emphasis (SPICE) solver. The proposed modelling approach is exploited to simulate virtual CE measurements according to international standard CISPR 25, and to investigate the impact of setup features, including grounding connections of shields, the propagation of CE in electrically long power buses, the operating point (power, torque, speed) of the motor-drive system

    Common-Mode Modeling of Neutral Point Clamped Converter Based Dual Active Bridge

    Modern power converters designed with wide-bandgap semiconductors are known to generate substantial conducted electromagnetic interference as a side effect of high edge rate and high frequency switching. With the advancement in power electronic converters, the significant EMI challenges need to be addressed for distribution level power systems. The goal is to provide a computationally efficient method of EMI characterization for conducted emissions for this future generation of power distribution systems. The first step in making this possible is through creating an accurate EMI characterization platform for the neutral point clamped dual active bridge. In this thesis, a formalized common-mode modeling approach is carried out for transforming this mixed-mode power system into its common-mode equivalent circuit. The approach is validated through comparison of time-domain waveforms predicted by detailed mixed-mode and common-mode equivalent models of the representative power distribution system, with a proposed future validation using hardware measurements. The experimental studies highlight the utility of the proposed modeling approach to assess design mitigation strategies
