    Time-domain optimization of amplifiers based on distributed genetic algorithms

    Thesis presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the subject of Electrical and Computer EngineeringThe work presented in this thesis addresses the task of circuit optimization, helping the designer facing the high performance and high efficiency circuits demands of the market and technology evolution. A novel framework is introduced, based on time-domain analysis, genetic algorithm optimization, and distributed processing. The time-domain optimization methodology is based on the step response of the amplifier. The main advantage of this new time-domain methodology is that, when a given settling-error is reached within the desired settling-time, it is automatically guaranteed that the amplifier has enough open-loop gain, AOL, output-swing (OS), slew-rate (SR), closed loop bandwidth and closed loop stability. Thus, this simplification of the circuit‟s evaluation helps the optimization process to converge faster. The method used to calculate the step response expression of the circuit is based on the inverse Laplace transform applied to the transfer function, symbolically, multiplied by 1/s (which represents the unity input step). Furthermore, may be applied to transfer functions of circuits with unlimited number of zeros/poles, without approximation in order to keep accuracy. Thus, complex circuit, with several design/optimization degrees of freedom can also be considered. The expression of the step response, from the proposed methodology, is based on the DC bias operating point of the devices of the circuit. For this, complex and accurate device models (e.g. BSIM3v3) are integrated. During the optimization process, the time-domain evaluation of the amplifier is used by the genetic algorithm, in the classification of the genetic individuals. The time-domain evaluator is integrated into the developed optimization platform, as independent library, coded using C programming language. The genetic algorithms have demonstrated to be a good approach for optimization since they are flexible and independent from the optimization-objective. Different levels of abstraction can be optimized either system level or circuit level. Optimization of any new block is basically carried-out by simply providing additional configuration files, e.g. chromosome format, in text format; and the circuit library where the fitness value of each individual of the genetic algorithm is computed. Distributed processing is also employed to address the increasing processing time demanded by the complex circuit analysis, and the accurate models of the circuit devices. The communication by remote processing nodes is based on Message Passing interface (MPI). It is demonstrated that the distributed processing reduced the optimization run-time by more than one order of magnitude. Platform assessment is carried by several examples of two-stage amplifiers, which have been optimized and successfully used, embedded, in larger systems, such as data converters. A dedicated example of an inverter-based self-biased two-stage amplifier has been designed, laid-out and fabricated as a stand-alone circuit and experimentally evaluated.     Accurate Settling-Time Modeling and Design Procedures for Two-Stage Miller-Compensated Amplifiers for Switched-Capacitor Circuits

    We present modeling techniques for accurate estimation of settling errors in switched-capacitor (SC) circuits built with Miller-compensated operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs). One distinctive feature of the proposal is the computation of the impact of signal levels (on both the model parameters and the model structure) as they change during transient evolution. This is achieved by using an event-driven behavioral approach that combines small- and large-signal behavioral descriptions and keeps track of the amplifier state after each clock phase. Also, SC circuits are modeled under closed-loop conditions to guarantee that the results remain close to those obtained by electrical simulation of the actual circuits. Based on these models, which can be regarded as intermediate between the more established small-signal approach and full-fledged simulations, design procedures for dimensioning SC building blocks are presented whose targets are system-level specifications (such as ENOB and SNDR) instead of OTA specifications.     A fully on-chip LDO voltage regulator with 37 dB PSRR at 1 MHz for remotely powered biomedical implants

    This article presents a fully on-chip low-power LDO voltage regulator dedicated to remotely powered wireless cortical implants. This regulator is stable over the full range of alternating load current and provides fast load regulation achieved by applying a time-domain design methodology. Moreover, a new compensation technique is proposed and implemented to improve PSRR beyond the performance levels which can be obtained using the standard cascode compensation technique. Measurement results show that the regulator has a load regulation of 0.175 V/A, a line regulation of 0.024%, and a PSRR of 37 dB at 1MHz power carrier frequency. The output of the regulator settles within 10-bit accuracy of the nominal voltage (1.8 V) within 1.6μs, at full load transition. The total ground current including the bandgap reference circuit is 28μA and the active chip area measures 290μm×360μm in a 0.18μm CMOS technolog

    Analog CMOS Readout Channel for Time and Amplitude Measurements With Radiation Sensitivity Analysis for Gain-Boosting Amplifiers

    The front-end readout channel consists of a charge sensitive amplifier (CSA) and two different unipolar-shaping circuits to generate pulses suitable for time and energy measurement. The signal processing chain of the single channel is built of two different parallel processing paths: a fast path with a peaking time of 30 ns to obtain the time of arrival for each particle impinging the detector; and a slow path with a peaking time of 400 ns dedicated for low noise amplitude measurements, which is formed by a pole-zero cancellation circuit and a 4th order complex shaper based on a bridged-T architecture. The tunability of the system is accomplished by the discharge time constant of the CSA in order to accommodate various event rates. The readout system has been implemented in a 180 nm CMOS technology with the size of 525 μm x 290 μm . The building blocks use compact gain-boosting techniques based on quasi-floating gate (QFG) transistors achieving accurate energy measurement with good resolution. The high impedance nodes of QFG transistors require a detailed study of sensitivity to single-effect transients (SET). After carrying out this study, this paper proposes a method to select the value of the QFG capacitors, minimizing the area occupancy while maintaining robustness to radiation. The nonlinearity of the CSA-slow-shaper has been found to be less than 1% over a 10–70 fC input charge.     Design Techniques for High Speed Low Voltage and Low Power Non-Calibrated Pipeline Analog to Digital Converters

    The profound digitization of modern microelectronic modules made Analog-to- Digital converters (ADC) key components in many systems. With resolutions up to 14bits and sampling rates in the 100s of MHz, the pipeline ADC is a prime candidate for a wide range of applications such as instrumentation, communications and consumer electronics. However, while past work focused on enhancing the performance of the pipeline ADC from an architectural standpoint, little has been done to individually address its fundamental building blocks. This work aims to achieve the latter by proposing design techniques to improve the performance of these blocks with minimal power consumption in low voltage environments, such that collectively high performance is achieved in the pipeline ADC. Towards this goal, a Recycling Folded Cascode (RFC) amplifier is proposed as an enhancement to the general performance of the conventional folded cascode. Tested in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) 0.18?m Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) technology, the RFC provides twice the bandwidth, 8-10dB additional gain, more than twice the slew rate and improved noise performance over the conventional folded cascode-all at no additional power or silicon area. The direct auto-zeroing offset cancellation scheme is optimized for low voltage environments using a dual level common mode feedback (CMFB) circuit, and amplifier differential offsets up to 50mV are effectively cancelled. Together with the RFC, the dual level CMFB was used to implement a sample and hold amplifier driving a singleended load of 1.4pF and using only 2.6mA; at 200MS/s better than 9bit linearity is achieved. Finally a power conscious technique is proposed to reduce the kickback noise of dynamic comparators without resorting to the use of pre-amplifiers. When all techniques are collectively used to implement a 1Vpp 10bit 160MS/s pipeline ADC in Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) 0.18[mu]m CMOS, 9.2 effective number of bits (ENOB) is achieved with a near Nyquist-rate full scale signal. The ADC uses an area of 1.1mm2 and consumes 42mW in its analog core. Compared to recent state-of-the-art implementations in the 100-200MS/s range, the presented pipeline ADC uses the least power per conversion rated at 0.45pJ/conversion-step

    Design and Analysis of Low-power Millimeter-Wave SiGe BiCMOS Circuits with Application to Network Measurement Systems

    Interest in millimeter (mm-) wave frequencies covering the spectrum of 30-300 GHz has been steadily increasing. Advantages such as larger absolute bandwidth and smaller form-factor have made this frequency region attractive for numerous applications, including high-speed wireless communication, sensing, material science, health, automotive radar, and space exploration. Continuous development of silicon-germanium heterojunction bipolar transistor (SiGe HBT) and associated BiCMOS technology has achieved transistors with fT/fmax of 505/720 GHz and integration with 55 nm CMOS. Such accomplishment and predictions of beyond THz performance have made SiGe BiCMOS technology the most competitive candidate for addressing the aforementioned applications. Especially for mobile applications, a critical demand for future mm-wave applications will be low DC power consumption (Pdc), which requires a substantial reduction of supply voltage and current. Conventionally, reducing the supply voltage will lead to HBTs operating close to or in the saturation region, which is typically avoided in mm-wave circuits due to expectated performance degradation and often inaccurate models. However, due to only moderate speed reduction at the forward-biased base-collector voltage (VBC) up to 0.5 V and the accuracy of the compact model HICUM/L2 also in saturation, low-power mm-wave circuits with SiGe HBTs operating in saturation offer intriguing benefits, which have been explored in this thesis based on 130 nm SiGe BiCMOS technologies: • Different low-power mm-wave circuit blocks are discussed in detail, including low-noise amplifiers (LNAs), down-conversion mixers, and various frequency multipliers covering a wide frequency range from V-band (50-75 GHz) to G-band (140-220 GHz). • Aiming at realizing a better trade-off between Pdc and RF performance, a drastic decrease in supply voltage is realized with forward-biased VBC, forcing transistors of the circuits to operate in saturation. • Discussions contain the theoretical analysis of the key figure of merits (FoMs), topology and bias selection, device sizing, and performance enhancement techniques. • A 173-207 GHz low-power amplifier with 23 dB gain and 3.2 mW Pdc, and a 72-108 GHz low-power tunable amplifier with 10-23 dB gain and 4-21 mW Pdc were designed. • A 97 GHz low-power down-conversion mixer was presented with 9.6 dB conversion gain (CG) and 12 mW Pdc. • For multipliers, a 56-66 GHz low-power frequency quadrupler with -3.6 dB peak CG and 12 mW Pdc, and a 172-201 GHz low-power frequency tripler with -4 dB peak CG and 10.5 mW Pdc were realized. By cascading these two circuits, also a 176-193 GHz low-power ×12 multiplier was designed, achieving -11 dBm output power with only 26 mW Pdc. • An integrated 190 GHz low-power receiver was designed as one receiving channel of a G-band frequency extender specifically for a VNA-based measurement system. Another goal of this receiver is to explore the lowest possible Pdc while keeping its highly competitive RF performance for general applications requiring a wide LO tuning range. Apart from the low-power design method of circuit blocks, the careful analysis and distribution of the receiver FoMs are also applied for further reduction of the overall Pdc. Along this line, this receiver achieved a peak CG of 49 dB with a 14 dB tunning range, consuming only 29 mW static Pdc for the core part and 171 mW overall Pdc, including the LO chain. • All designs presented in this thesis were fabricated and characterized on-wafer. Thanks to the accurate compact model HICUM/L2, first-pass access was achieved for all circuits, and simulation results show excellent agreement with measurements. • Compared with recently published work, most of the designs in this thesis show extremely low Pdc with highly competitive key FoMs regarding gain, bandwidth, and noise figure. • The observed excellent measurement-simulation agreement enables the sensitivity analysis of each design for obtaining a deeper insight into the impact of transistor-related physical effects on critical circuit performance parameters.     Microwave Characteristics of an Independently Biased 3-stack InGaP/GaAs HBT Configuration

    This paper investigates various important microwave characteristics of an independently biased 3-stack InGaP/GaAs heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) chip at both small-signal and large-signal operation. By taking the advantage of the independently biased functionality, bias condition for individual transistor can be adjusted flexibly, resulting in the ability of independent control for both small-signal and large-signal performances. It was found that at small-signal operation stability and isolation characteristics of the proposed configuration can be significantly improved by controlling bias condition of the second-stage and the third-stage transistors while at large-signal operation its linearity and power gain can be improved through controlling the bias condition of the first-stage and the third-stage transistors. To demonstrate the benefits of using such an independently biased configuration, a measured optimum large-signal performance at an operation frequency of 1.6 GHz under an optimum bias condition for the high gain, low distortion were obtained as: PAE = 23.5 %, Pout = 12 dBm; Gain = 32.6 dB at IMD3 = -35 dBc. Moreover, to demonstrate the superior advantage of the proposed configuration, its small-signal and large-signal performance were also compared to that of a single stage common-emitter, a conventional 2-stack, an independently biased 2-stack and a conventional 3-stack configuration. The compared results showed that the independently biased 3-stack is the best candidate among the configurations for various wireless communications applications

    Joint implementation of the sharing OTA and bias current regulation techniques in a 11-bit 10 MS/s pipelined ADC

    The power dissipation of a pipeline analog to digital converter (ADC) depends on different design strategies. In this brief communication, an 11-bit pipeline ADC consisting of five stages with 2.5 effective bit resolution is described. The circuit combines two main techniques to improve power dissipation, such as sharing OTAs between adjacent ADC stages and dynamic regulation of the OTA biasing according to the stage and subcycle of operation. To reduce the charge injection effect caused by the OTA sharing added circuitry, the ADC uses a topology based on four-input OTAs to reduce the number of transmission gates. The ADC has been fabricated using a standard 0.35 µm CMOS process. It consumes 17.85 mW at 10 MSample/s sampling rate.     New mathematical formulation for designing a fully differential self-biased folded cascode amplifier

    One of the most important building blocks in analog circuit design is the operational amplifiers. This is because of their versatility and wide spread usage in many applications such as communications transmitters and receivers, analog to digital converters, or any other application that requires a small signal to be amplified. The basic amplifier topologies are introduced. Then, some operational amplifiers topologies are introduced with some techniques to self bias these amplifiers. The folded cascode fully differential Op-Amp with self bias is presented. This is one of the newest amplifier topologies which provide stable self-biased amplifiers. A new mathematical model for fully differential folded cascode amplifiers is presented and generalized to include the family of fully differential complementary amplifiers. This formulation focuses on deriving detailed design equations for the amplifier gain and frequency response. The equations are verified through time domain and frequency domain simulations of different fabrication processes to ensure the validity of the model across a wide range of processes. The model was verified against TMSC 180nm, 250nm, and 350nm fabrication processes. The new model agrees well with simulations; with 1% error for the amplifier gain and \u3c7% error for amplifier bandwidth. The relatively high error value for the bandwidth is because the model considers the worst case scenario and overestimates the output capacitance. Finally, the algorithm of getting this formulation is extended to include special and commonly used cases. This formulation proved to be very useful in designing stable, self-biased, fully differential folded cascode amplifiers
