    Hierarchical eyelid and face tracking

    Most applications on Human Computer Interaction (HCI) require to extract the movements of user faces, while avoiding high memory and time expenses. Moreover, HCI systems usually use low-cost cameras, while current face tracking techniques strongly depend on the image resolution. In this paper, we tackle the problem of eyelid tracking by using Appearance-Based Models, thus achieving accurate estimations of the movements of the eyelids, while avoiding cues, which require high-resolution faces, such as edge detectors or colour information. Consequently, we can track the fast and spontaneous movements of the eyelids, a very hard task due to the small resolution of the eye regions. Subsequently, we combine the results of eyelid tracking with the estimations of other facial features, such as the eyebrows and the lips. As a result, a hierarchical tracking framework is obtained: we demonstrate that combining two appearance-based trackers allows to get accurate estimates for the eyelid, eyebrows, lips and also the 3D head pose by using low-cost video cameras and in real-time. Therefore, our approach is shown suitable to be used for further facial-expression analysis.Peer Reviewe

    Deterministic and stochastic methods for gaze tracking in real-time

    Psychological evidence demonstrates how eye gaze analysis is requested for human computer interaction endowed with emotion recognition capabilities. The existing proposals analyse eyelid and iris motion by using colour information and edge detectors, but eye movements are quite fast and difficult for precise and robust tracking. Instead, we propose to reduce the dimensionality of the image-data by using multi-Gaussian modelling and transition estimations by applying partial differences. The tracking system can handle illumination changes, low-image resolution and occlusions while estimating eyelid and iris movements as continuous variables. Therefore, this is an accurate and robust tracking system for eyelids and irises in 3D for standard image quality.Peer Reviewe

    A Comprehensive Performance Evaluation of Deformable Face Tracking "In-the-Wild"

    Recently, technologies such as face detection, facial landmark localisation and face recognition and verification have matured enough to provide effective and efficient solutions for imagery captured under arbitrary conditions (referred to as "in-the-wild"). This is partially attributed to the fact that comprehensive "in-the-wild" benchmarks have been developed for face detection, landmark localisation and recognition/verification. A very important technology that has not been thoroughly evaluated yet is deformable face tracking "in-the-wild". Until now, the performance has mainly been assessed qualitatively by visually assessing the result of a deformable face tracking technology on short videos. In this paper, we perform the first, to the best of our knowledge, thorough evaluation of state-of-the-art deformable face tracking pipelines using the recently introduced 300VW benchmark. We evaluate many different architectures focusing mainly on the task of on-line deformable face tracking. In particular, we compare the following general strategies: (a) generic face detection plus generic facial landmark localisation, (b) generic model free tracking plus generic facial landmark localisation, as well as (c) hybrid approaches using state-of-the-art face detection, model free tracking and facial landmark localisation technologies.     Automatic Generation of Facial Expression Using Triangular Geometric Deformation

    AbstractThis paper presents an image deformation algorithm and constructs an automatic facial expression generation system to generate new facial expressions in neutral state. After the users input the face image in a neutral state into the system, the system separates the possible facial areas and the image background by skin color segmentation. It then uses the morphological operation to remove noise and to capture the organs of facial expression, such as the eyes, mouth, eyebrow, and nose. The feature control points are labeled according to the feature points (FPs) defined by MPEG-4. After the designation of the deformation expression, the system also increases the image correction points based on the obtained FP coordinates. The FPs are utilized as image deformation units by triangular segmentation. The triangle is split into two vectors. The triangle points are regarded as linear combinations of two vectors, and the coefficients of the linear combinations correspond to the triangular vectors of the original image. Next, the corresponding coordinates are obtained to complete the image correction by image interpolation technology to generate the new expression. As for the proposed deformation algorithm, 10 additional correction points are generated in the positions corresponding to the FPs obtained according to MPEG-4. Obtaining the correction points within a very short operation time is easy. Using a particular triangulation for deformation can extend the material area without narrowing the unwanted material area, thus saving the filling material operation in some areas

    Real Time Driver Safety System

    The technology for driver safety has been developed in many fields such as airbag system, Anti-lock Braking System or ABS, ultrasonic warning system, and others. Recently, some of the automobile companies have introduced a new feature of driver safety systems. This new system is to make the car slower if it finds a driver’s drowsy eyes. For instance, Toyota Motor Corporation announced that it has given its pre-crash safety system the ability to determine whether a driver’s eyes are properly open with an eye monitor. This paper is focusing on finding a driver’s drowsy eyes by using face detection technology. The human face is a dynamic object and has a high degree of variability; that is why face detection is considered a difficult problem in computer vision. Even with the difficulty of this problem, scientists and computer programmers have developed and improved the face detection technologies. This paper also introduces some algorithms to find faces or eyes and compares algorithm’s characteristics. Once we find a face in a sequence of images, the matter is to find drowsy eyes in the driver safety system. This system can slow a car or alert the user not to sleep; that is the purpose of the pre-crash safety system. This paper introduces the VeriLook SDK, which is used for finding a driver’s face in the real time driver safety system. With several experiments, this paper also introduces a new way to find drowsy eyes by AOI,Area of Interest. This algorithm improves the speed of finding drowsy eyes and the consumption of memory use without using any object classification methods or matching eye templates. Moreover, this system has a higher accuracy of classification than others

This survey provides an overview of multimedia technologies and robust algorithms in multimedia data processing, medical multimedia processing, human facial expression tracking and pose recognition, and multimedia in education and training. This survey will also analyze and propose a future research direction based on the overview of current robust algorithms and multimedia technologies.     Non-ideal iris recognition

    Of the many biometrics that exist, iris recognition is finding more attention than any other due to its potential for improved accuracy, permanence, and acceptance. Current iris recognition systems operate on frontal view images of good quality. Due to the small area of the iris, user co-operation is required. In this work, a new system capable of processing iris images which are not necessarily in frontal view is described. This overcomes one of the major hurdles with current iris recognition systems and enhances user convenience and accuracy. The proposed system is designed to operate in two steps: (i) preprocessing and estimation of the gaze direction and (ii) processing and encoding of the rotated iris image. Two objective functions are used to estimate the gaze direction. Later, the off-angle iris image undergoes geometric transformations involving the estimated angle and is further processed as if it were a frontal view image. Two methods: (i) PCA and (ii) ICA are used for encoding. Three different datasets are used to quantify performance of the proposed non-ideal recognition system

    Methods to automatically build Point Distribution Models for objects like hand palms and faces represented in images

    In this work we developed methods to automatically extract significant points of objects like hand palms and faces represented in images that can be used to build Point Distribution Models automatically. These models are further used to segment the modelled objects in new images, through the use of Active Shape Models or Active Appearance Models. These models showed to be efficient in the segmentation of objects, but had as drawback the fact that the labelling of the landmark points was usually manually made and consequently time consuming. Thus, in this paper we describe some methods capable to extract significant points of objects like hand palms and compare the segmentation results in new images
