A definitive version was subsequently published in Automatica (2014), DOI: 10.1016/j.automatica.2013.12.032This communique proposes a multivariable super-twisting sliding mode structure which represents an extension of the well-known single input case. A Lyapunov approach is used to show finite time stability for the system in the presence of a class of uncertainty. This structure is used to create a sliding mode observer to detect and isolate faults for a satellite system. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

A fixed-time second order sliding mode observer for a class of nonlinear systems

    Get PDF
This paper presents a second order fixed time sliding mode observer based on an extension of the super-twisting algorithm. This observer can be applied to a class of nonlinear system with a block-wise representation. The block structure provides a straightforward form to the application of the proposed second order sliding mode algorithm, yielding to finite-time convergence with a settling time independent to the system initial conditions. Finally, as numerical simulation example, the case of a linear induction motor is studied, exposing the efficiency and feasibility of the proposal

Fault tolerant control design of floating offshore wind turbines

    Get PDF
This work is concerned with active vibration mitigation in wind turbines (WT) but not through the use of specifically tailored devices. Instead, a general control scheme is designed for torque and pitch controllers based on a super-twisting algorithm, which uses additional feedback of the fore-aft and side-to-side acceleration signals at the top of the WT tower to mitigate the vibrational behavior. In general, proposed methods to improve damping through pitch and torque control suffer from increased blade pitch actuator usage. However, in this work the blade pitch angle is smoothed leading to a decrease of the pitch actuator effort, among other benefits evidenced through numerical experiments. The most frequent faults induce vibrations in the corresponding WT subsystems. In fact, vibration monitoring has been recently used for fault diagnosis Thus, by means of vibration mitigation, different faulty conditions can be alleviated leading to a passive fault tolerant control. In this work, coupled non-linear aero-hydro- servo-elastic simulations of a floating offshore wind turbine are carried out for one of the most common pitch actuator faults.Postprint (published version

Second order sliding mode observers for fault reconstruction in power networks

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from the publisher via the DOI in this record. This paper proposes a 2-sliding mode observer to detect and reconstruct a certain class of load altering faults in a power network. The observer design is based on the recently proposed multivariable super-twisting structure. The IEEE benchmark power networks used to test the scheme are modelled as a semi-explicit class of differential algebraic equations (DAEs). For the purpose of developing the detection scheme, only the phase angles of the generators are measured, which represent a subset of the differential states of the DAEs. The objective is to estimate the differential states (the phase angles and frequencies of the generators), the algebraic states (the phase angles of the load bus tensions) and to reconstruct a class of load altering faults affecting the network. The proposed observer is assessed in simulation on two IEEE benchmarks: the 9-bus and 14-bus networks, so as to verify its capability to correctly estimate the differential and algebraic states of the network in spite of its complexity and uncertainty. Moreover, the capability of the proposed scheme to detect the presence of a load altering fault, to exactly identify its position in the network, and to precisely reconstruct the shape of the fault itself is shown and discussed

Design of Super Twisting Integral Sliding Mode Control for Industrial Robot Manipulator

    Get PDF
In the present work, integral sliding mode based continuous control algorithm is extended to multi input multi output system. The typical integral sliding mode control (ISMC) contains nominal control with discontinuous feedback control due to which overall control becomes discontinuous in nature. The proposed controller is a fusion of two continuous terms and one of which is able to handle, estimate and reject the disturbance successfully. A proposed robust ISMC technique is applied for industrial robot manipulators which utilizes interactive manipulation activity. Here, robust position tracking control obtained via ISMC principle for two link IRM scheme influenced by parametric uncertainties and external disturbances. The proposed ISMC design replaces the discontinuous part by continuous control, which super twisting control is able to handle the disturbance rejection completely. The effectiveness of the proposed control technique is tested under uncertain conditions and comparison study with other controllers has been done. The simulation result shows that the tracking error is effectively minimized by the proposed technique in presence of uncertain conditions

Flight Data Validation of an Icing Accretion Estimation Scheme using Super-twisting Observers

    Get PDF
This paper develops a generalised multivariable super-twisting observer for a class of nonlinear systems in which the unmeasured variables linked to the known state dependent matrix function appear multiplicatively. A sufficient condition is given to guarantee that the reconstruction errors associated with the unmeasurable variables converge to zero in finite time. This approach is then used to address the aircraft icing accretion estimation problem despite unreliable sensor measurement. The efficacy of the approach has been evaluated via real flight data recorded under natural icing conditions. Results show that the observer has the capability to estimate the change of the drag coefficient induced by icing accretion and to reconstruct the unreliable pitch rate sensor measurement simultaneously

Integral Sliding Mode Control for Markovian Jump T-S Fuzzy Descriptor Systems Based on the Super-Twisting Algorithm

    Get PDF
This paper investigates integral sliding mode control problems for Markovian jump T-S fuzzy descriptor systems via the super-twisting algorithm. A new integral sliding surface which is continuous is constructed and an integral sliding mode control scheme based on a variable gain super-twisting algorithm is presented to guarantee the well-posedness of the state trajectories between two consecutive switchings. The stability of the sliding motion is analyzed by considering the descriptor redundancy and the properties of fuzzy membership functions. It is shown that the proposed variable gain super-twisting algorithm is an extension of the classical single-input case to the multi-input case. Finally, a bio-economic system is numerically simulated to verify the merits of the method proposed

Adaptive continuous higher order sliding mode control

Author's Preprint, submitted to AutomaticaAn early version of this paper was presented at ACC’14.This paper is concerned with the development of an adaptation structure which can be applied to conventional, super-twisting and higher-order sliding mode schemes. The objective is to alter the modulation gains associated with these schemes in such a way that they are as small as possible to mitigate chattering effects, but large enough to ensure that sliding can be maintained in the presence of bounded and derivative bounded uncertainties. In all the proposed schemes, the equivalent control is used to drive the adaptive mechanism. The approach is based on a novel dual layer nested adaptive methodology which is quite different to the existing schemes proposed in the sliding mode literature. The new adaptive schemes do not require knowledge of the minimum and maximum allowed values of the ad
