Tackling Dynamic Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows by means of Ant Colony System
The Dynamic Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows (DVRPTW) is an
extension of the well-known Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP), which takes into
account the dynamic nature of the problem. This aspect requires the vehicle
routes to be updated in an ongoing manner as new customer requests arrive in
the system and must be incorporated into an evolving schedule during the
working day. Besides the vehicle capacity constraint involved in the classical
VRP, DVRPTW considers in addition time windows, which are able to better
capture real-world situations. Despite this, so far, few studies have focused
on tackling this problem of greater practical importance. To this end, this
study devises for the resolution of DVRPTW, an ant colony optimization based
algorithm, which resorts to a joint solution construction mechanism, able to
construct in parallel the vehicle routes. This method is coupled with a local
search procedure, aimed to further improve the solutions built by ants, and
with an insertion heuristics, which tries to reduce the number of vehicles used
to service the available customers. The experiments indicate that the proposed
algorithm is competitive and effective, and on DVRPTW instances with a higher
dynamicity level, it is able to yield better results compared to existing

Dynamic approach to solve the daily drayage problem with travel time uncertainty
The intermodal transport chain can become more e cient by means of a good organization of
drayage movements. Drayage in intermodal container terminals involves the pick up and delivery
of containers at customer locations, and the main objective is normally the assignment
of transportation tasks to the di erent vehicles, often with the presence of time windows. This
scheduling has traditionally been done once a day and, under these conditions, any unexpected
event could cause timetable delays. We propose to use the real-time knowledge about vehicle
position to solve this problem, which permanently allows the planner to reassign tasks in case
the problem conditions change. This exact knowledge of the position of the vehicles is possible
using a geographic positioning system by satellite (GPS, Galileo, Glonass), and the results show
that this additional data can be used to dynamically improve the solution
Dynamic vehicle routing problems: Three decades and counting
Since the late 70s, much research activity has taken place on the class of dynamic vehicle routing problems (DVRP), with the time period after year 2000 witnessing a real explosion in related papers. Our paper sheds more light into work in this area over more than 3 decades by developing a taxonomy of DVRP papers according to 11 criteria. These are (1) type of problem, (2) logistical context, (3) transportation mode, (4) objective function, (5) fleet size, (6) time constraints, (7) vehicle capacity constraints, (8) the ability to reject customers, (9) the nature of the dynamic element, (10) the nature of the stochasticity (if any), and (11) the solution method. We comment on technological vis-à-vis methodological advances for this class of problems and suggest directions for further research. The latter include alternative objective functions, vehicle speed as decision variable, more explicit linkages of methodology to technological advances and analysis of worst case or average case performance of heuristics.© 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc
Analysing the police patrol routing problem : a review
Police patrol is a complex process. While on patrol, police officers must balance many intersecting responsibilities. Most notably, police must proactively patrol and prevent offenders from committing crimes but must also reactively respond to real-time incidents. Efficient patrol strategies are crucial to manage scarce police resources and minimize emergency response times. The objective of this review paper is to discuss solution methods that can be used to solve the so-called police patrol routing problem (PPRP). The starting point of the review is the existing literature on the dynamic vehicle routing problem (DVRP). A keyword search resulted in 30 articles that focus on the DVRP with a link to police. Although the articles refer to policing, there is no specific focus on the PPRP; hence, there is a knowledge gap. A diversity of approaches is put forward ranging from more convenient solution methods such as a (hybrid) Genetic Algorithm (GA), linear programming and routing policies, to more complex Markov Decision Processes and Online Stochastic Combinatorial Optimization. Given the objectives, characteristics, advantages and limitations, the (hybrid) GA, routing policies and local search seem the most valuable solution methods for solving the PPRP
Systematic Literature Review Of Particle Swarm Optimization Implementation For Time-Dependent Vehicle Routing Problem
Time-dependent VRP (TDVRP) is one of the three VRP variants that have not been widely explored in research in the field of operational research, while Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is an optimization algorithm in the field of operational research that uses many variables in its application. There is much research conducted about TDVRP, but few of them discuss PSO's implementation. This article presented as a literature review which aimed to find a research gap about implementation of PSO to resolve TDVRP cases. The research was conducted in five stages. The first stage, a review protocol defined in the form of research questions and methods to perform the review. The second stage is references searching. The third stage is screening the search result. The fourth stage is extracting data from references based on research questions. The fifth stage is reporting the study literature results. The results obtained from the screening process were 37 eligible reference articles, from 172 search results articles. The results of extraction and analysis of 37 reference articles show that research on TDVRP discusses the duration of travel time between 2 locations. The route optimization parameter is determined from the cost of the trip, including the total distance traveled, the total travel time, the number of routes, and the number used vehicles. The datasets that are used in research consist of 2 types, real-world datasets and simulation datasets. Solomon Benchmark is a simulation dataset that is widely used in the case of TDVRP. Research on PSO in the TDVRP case is dominated by the discussion of modifications to determine random values of PSO variables
