    Intelligent watermarking of long streams of document images

    Digital watermarking has numerous applications in the imaging domain, including (but not limited to) fingerprinting, authentication, tampering detection. Because of the trade-off between watermark robustness and image quality, the heuristic parameters associated with digital watermarking systems need to be optimized. A common strategy to tackle this optimization problem formulation of digital watermarking, known as intelligent watermarking (IW), is to employ evolutionary computing (EC) to optimize these parameters for each image, with a computational cost that is infeasible for practical applications. However, in industrial applications involving streams of document images, one can expect instances of problems to reappear over time. Therefore, computational cost can be saved by preserving the knowledge of previous optimization problems in a separate archive (memory) and employing that memory to speedup or even replace optimization for future similar problems. That is the basic principle behind the research presented in this thesis. Although similarity in the image space can lead to similarity in the problem space, there is no guarantee of that and for this reason, knowledge about the image space should not be employed whatsoever. Therefore, in this research, strategies to appropriately represent, compare, store and sample from problem instances are investigated. The objective behind these strategies is to allow for a comprehensive representation of a stream of optimization problems in a way to avoid re-optimization whenever a previously seen problem provides solutions as good as those that would be obtained by reoptimization, but at a fraction of its cost. Another objective is to provide IW systems with a predictive capability which allows replacing costly fitness evaluations with cheaper regression models whenever re-optimization cannot be avoided. To this end, IW of streams of document images is first formulated as the problem of optimizing a stream of recurring problems and a Dynamic Particle Swarm Optimization (DPSO) technique is proposed to tackle this problem. This technique is based on a two-tiered memory of static solutions. Memory solutions are re-evaluated for every new image and then, the re-evaluated fitness distribution is compared with stored fitness distribution as a mean of measuring the similarity between both problem instances (change detection). In simulations involving homogeneous streams of bi-tonal document images, the proposed approach resulted in a decrease of 95% in computational burden with little impact in watermarking performace. Optimization cost was severely decreased by replacing re-optimizations with recall to previously seen solutions. After that, the problem of representing the stream of optimization problems in a compact manner is addressed. With that, new optimization concepts can be incorporated into previously learned concepts in an incremental fashion. The proposed strategy to tackle this problem is based on Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) representation, trained with parameter and fitness data of all intermediate (candidate) solutions of a given problem instance. GMM sampling replaces selection of individual memory solutions during change detection. Simulation results demonstrate that such memory of GMMs is more adaptive and can thus, better tackle the optimization of embedding parameters for heterogeneous streams of document images when compared to the approach based on memory of static solutions. Finally, the knowledge provided by the memory of GMMs is employed as a manner of decreasing the computational cost of re-optimization. To this end, GMM is employed in regression mode during re-optimization, replacing part of the costly fitness evaluations in a strategy known as surrogate-based optimization. Optimization is split in two levels, where the first one relies primarily on regression while the second one relies primarily on exact fitness values and provide a safeguard to the whole system. Simulation results demonstrate that the use of surrogates allows for better adaptation in situations involving significant variations in problem representation as when the set of attacks employed in the fitness function changes. In general lines, the intelligent watermarking system proposed in this thesis is well adapted for the optimization of streams of recurring optimization problems. The quality of the resulting solutions for both, homogeneous and heterogeneous image streams is comparable to that obtained through full optimization but for a fraction of its computational cost. More specifically, the number of fitness evaluations is 97% smaller than that of full optimization for homogeneous streams and 95% for highly heterogeneous streams of document images. The proposed method is general and can be easily adapted to other applications involving streams of recurring problems

    The discrete wavelet transform (DWT) algorithms have a firm position in processing of signals in several areas of research and industry. As DWT provides both octave-scale frequency and spatial timing of the analyzed signal, it is constantly used to solve and treat more and more advanced problems. The present book: Discrete Wavelet Transforms: Algorithms and Applications reviews the recent progress in discrete wavelet transform algorithms and applications. The book covers a wide range of methods (e.g. lifting, shift invariance, multi-scale analysis) for constructing DWTs. The book chapters are organized into four major parts. Part I describes the progress in hardware implementations of the DWT algorithms. Applications include multitone modulation for ADSL and equalization techniques, a scalable architecture for FPGA-implementation, lifting based algorithm for VLSI implementation, comparison between DWT and FFT based OFDM and modified SPIHT codec. Part II addresses image processing algorithms such as multiresolution approach for edge detection, low bit rate image compression, low complexity implementation of CQF wavelets and compression of multi-component images. Part III focuses watermaking DWT algorithms. Finally, Part IV describes shift invariant DWTs, DC lossless property, DWT based analysis and estimation of colored noise and an application of the wavelet Galerkin method. The chapters of the present book consist of both tutorial and highly advanced material. Therefore, the book is intended to be a reference text for graduate students and researchers to obtain state-of-the-art knowledge on specific applications

    New watermarking methods for digital images.

    The phenomenal spread of the Internet places an enormous demand on content-ownership-validation. In this thesis, four new image-watermarking methods are presented. One method is based on discrete-wavelet-transformation (DWT) only while the rest are based on DWT and singular-value-decomposition (SVD) ensemble. The main target for this thesis is to reach a new blind-watermarking-method. Method IV presents such watermark using QR-codes. The use of QR-codes in watermarking is novel. The choice of such application is based on the fact that QR-Codes have errors self-correction-capability of 5% or higher which satisfies the nature of digital-image-processing. Results show that the proposed-methods introduced minimal distortion to the watermarked images as compared to other methods and are robust against JPEG, resizing and other attacks. Moreover, watermarking-method-II provides a solution to the detection of false watermark in the literature.     The signal processing task is a very critical issue in the majority of new technological inventions and challenges in a variety of applications in both science and engineering fields. Classical signal processing techniques have largely worked with mathematical models that are linear, local, stationary, and Gaussian. They have always favored closed-form tractability over real-world accuracy. These constraints were imposed by the lack of powerful computing tools. During the last few decades, signal processing theories, developments, and applications have matured rapidly and now include tools from many areas of mathematics, computer science, physics, and engineering. This book is targeted primarily toward both students and researchers who want to be exposed to a wide variety of signal processing techniques and algorithms. It includes 27 chapters that can be categorized into five different areas depending on the application at hand. These five categories are ordered to address image processing, speech processing, communication systems, time-series analysis, and educational packages respectively. The book has the advantage of providing a collection of applications that are completely independent and self-contained; thus, the interested reader can choose any chapter and skip to another without losing continuity

    In this manuscript we address data-hiding in images and videos. Specifically we address robust watermarking for images, robust watermarking jointly with compression, and finally non robust data-hiding.The first part of the manuscript deals with high-rate robust watermarking. After having briefly recalled the concept of informed watermarking, we study the two major watermarking families : trellis-based watermarking and quantized-based watermarking. We propose, firstly to reduce the computational complexity of the trellis-based watermarking, with a rotation based embedding, and secondly to introduce a trellis-based quantization in a watermarking system based on quantization.The second part of the manuscript addresses the problem of watermarking jointly with a JPEG2000 compression step or an H.264 compression step. The quantization step and the watermarking step are achieved simultaneously, so that these two steps do not fight against each other. Watermarking in JPEG2000 is achieved by using the trellis quantization from the part 2 of the standard. Watermarking in H.264 is performed on the fly, after the quantization stage, choosing the best prediction through the process of rate-distortion optimization. We also propose to integrate a Tardos code to build an application for traitors tracing.The last part of the manuscript describes the different mechanisms of color hiding in a grayscale image. We propose two approaches based on hiding a color palette in its index image. The first approach relies on the optimization of an energetic function to get a decomposition of the color image allowing an easy embedding. The second approach consists in quickly obtaining a color palette of larger size and then in embedding it in a reversible way.Dans ce manuscrit nous abordons l’insertion de données dans les images et les vidéos. Plus particulièrement nous traitons du tatouage robuste dans les images, du tatouage robuste conjointement à la compression et enfin de l’insertion de données (non robuste).La première partie du manuscrit traite du tatouage robuste à haute capacité. Après avoir brièvement rappelé le concept de tatouage informé, nous étudions les deux principales familles de tatouage : le tatouage basé treillis et le tatouage basé quantification. Nous proposons d’une part de réduire la complexité calculatoire du tatouage basé treillis par une approche d’insertion par rotation, ainsi que d’autre part d’introduire une approche par quantification basée treillis au seind’un système de tatouage basé quantification.La deuxième partie du manuscrit aborde la problématique de tatouage conjointement à la phase de compression par JPEG2000 ou par H.264. L’idée consiste à faire en même temps l’étape de quantification et l’étape de tatouage, de sorte que ces deux étapes ne « luttent pas » l’une contre l’autre. Le tatouage au sein de JPEG2000 est effectué en détournant l’utilisation de la quantification basée treillis de la partie 2 du standard. Le tatouage au sein de H.264 est effectué à la volée, après la phase de quantification, en choisissant la meilleure prédiction via le processus d’optimisation débit-distorsion. Nous proposons également d’intégrer un code de Tardos pour construire une application de traçage de traîtres.La dernière partie du manuscrit décrit les différents mécanismes de dissimulation d’une information couleur au sein d’une image en niveaux de gris. Nous proposons deux approches reposant sur la dissimulation d’une palette couleur dans son image d’index. La première approche consiste à modéliser le problème puis à l’optimiser afin d’avoir une bonne décomposition de l’image couleur ainsi qu’une insertion aisée. La seconde approche consiste à obtenir, de manière rapide et sûre, une palette de plus grande dimension puis à l’insérer de manière réversible

    An Investigation of Factors Affecting the Success of Regional Financial Management Information System (Case Study of Palangka Raya Government)

    Regional Financial Management Information System (SIMDAKEU) is a key e-government application to implement integrated financial management. The objective of this research is to investigate the factors that influence the achievement of the application in Palangka Raya Government. Model of Delone and McLean's information systems success and technology acceptance model (TAM) are applied as the research concept and model. Data were collected through questionnaires from 126 employees of Palangka Raya Government. A Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) approach was applied in this study. The results of this research showed that from 11 hypotheses proposed from eight constructs namely quality of information, system, service, intention to use, net benefit, users' perception about the ease of use and the usefulness, there are 10 hypotheses proven and 1 hypothesis not proven. The quality of information is highly influencing the achievement of regional financial information system based on the research outcomes. The findings of this research can assist the government in developing the regional financial management information system, so the government can maximize the function of the system as a tool for realizing good and clean governanc
