    Get PDF
An overview of the different methodologies developed so far for the investigation of paramagnetic species in foods is presented. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR), also known as electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR), is the primary technique toward the development of methods for the exploration of EPR-sensitive species, such as free radicals, reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitrogen reactive species (NRS), and C-centered radicals and metal ions. These methods aim for: (a) quantification of radical species, (b) exploration of redox chemical reaction mechanisms in foods, (c) assessment of the antioxidant capacity of food, and (d) food quality, stability, and food shelf life. For these purposes, different radical initiations and detections have been used in foods depending on both the chemistry of the target system and the kind of information required, listed in: the induction of radicals by (a) microwave, UV, or γ-radiation; (b) heating; (c) addition of metals; and (d) use of oxidants

The purpose of this study is to understand how western-developed leadership theories are translated and practiced in the Modern Arab Middle East (MAME). Over the past century the notion of leadership has progressed through phases of understanding, definition, and practice. This evolution continues today and is no longer contained to the academic and practice-oriented institutions of North America and Europe. Through western-styled educational institutions and professional industries, western-developed leadership theories have stretched around the globe, including the MAME. While this is known, what is much less understood is how these theories are adopted and adapted. This study’s objective is to understand what theories of leadership are taught at Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs in the Modern Arab Middle East and how are they applied in local contexts. The research design was qualitative, interpretivist, and exploratory in nature. Data was collected from the MBA programs, their faculty alumni, and by the observations of the researcher. Publicly available documents were gathered by from online sources and during visits to the programs. Interviewed with respondents were conducted both in-person and through phone and digital conversations. Documents and transcripts were catalogued and thematically analyzed with the resulting themes constituting the findings of the study. The first set of findings centers around the question of how leadership is situated as well as what leadership theories are taught and how. It was found that leadership is professed to be highly valued, is broadly defined, and that is taught through traditional educational methods. The second set of findings pertain to what practitioners do with this education. It was found that leadership was spoken of in nine ways: local, regional, and internationally; a changing environment; entrepreneurship; family business; management preferred over leadership, and professional or personal development. Additionally, respondents reported that they experience the concept of leadership to be enigmatic, for a few, and future oriented. This study is hoped to be one of a series to come that considers how western-leadership theory is used in the MAME with an aim that theory may be useful and congruent within local and regional contexts

Action nominalizations in Early Modern scientific English

    Get PDF
The present dissertation, Action nominalizations in Early Modern scientific English, was conceived as a contribution to the literature on nominalizations. Its point of departure was the assertion that action nominalizations are the result of a word-formation process which aims at filling gaps in the vocabulary of a particular language, English in this case. Action nominalizations are clear cases of grammatical metaphor (Halliday 2004 [1985]), since they are nouns, but they refer to actions as verbs do. For this reason, attention is given to the evolution and use of action nominalizations in the Early Modern English period (henceforth EModE), the time which sees the greatest increase of vocabulary in the history of the English language. Given that nouns prototypically refer to objects rather than actions, the question arises as to how they behave when they denote actions, and what the consequences of this use are

Ultrafast photophysics of transition metal coordination complexes studied with femtosecond extreme ultraviolet transient absorption spectroscopy

    Get PDF
Ultrafast femtosecond dynamics of various simple metalloporphryinates (M = Fe3+, Ni2+, Mn3+, Co2+) and a heterobimetallic complex CoMnCl(py3tren) are studied using a homebuilt extreme ultraviolet (XUV) transient absorption apparatus. XUV photons are produced via high-harmonic generation, allowing M-edge XANES measurements to be performed as an in-lab technique. This developing technique is coupled with semi-empirical ligand field multiplet (LFM) simulations to enable the application of tabletop M-edge XANES to resolve the metal-specific ultrafast relaxation mechanism of coordination complexes, complementing information gained from ligand-specific techniques such as optical transient absorption. The experimental apparatus for transient absorption pump-probe XANES of molecular thin films is described in detail. The research described in this thesis establishes M-edge spectroscopy as a powerful tool for studying the steady-state and transient electronic structure of coordination complexes. This technique has been applied to four metalloporphyrinates (FeTPPCl, NiOEP, CoOEP, and MnOEPCl); results show diverse M-edge transient spectra and kinetics that reveal the strong impact of the metal d-orbital occupation on the early time relaxation mechanism and intermediate states of these catalytically-relevant systems. This project is the first instance of using tabletop transient XUV/VUV spectroscopy on coordination complexes and furthermore highlights the importance of directly probing of the metal center in these systems. Ongoing work on the transient XANES of heterobimetallic complex CoMnCl(py3tren) (triply-deprotonated N,N,N-tri(2-(2-pyridylamino)ethyl)amine) is presented, the aim of which is to detangle the complex photophysics present in a system with directly-interacting dual metal centers within a non-innocent ligand scaffold. The relation of function to metal-specific photodynamics will help lay essential groundwork for the development of multimetallic catalysts with efficiencies comparable to those found in nature

An exploration into senior managers' effectiveness: the case of the Muscat Municipality, Oman

    Get PDF
Since the eighties there has been a concerted effort to reform the public sector in order to, amongst other things, improve their performance and service delivery to the public. Large scale and capital intensive projects are required, especially within Oman a developing country, for ensuring development and improved service for the citizen. The planning, implementation and maintenance of these initiatives rests on public sector institutions. The role and effectiveness of senior managers play a significant part in the overall success of their organisations and the development of their nations. The main concern of this research is to explore and identifying the behavioural influences which contribute to the increased effectiveness of the senior managers of the Muscat Municipality, Oman. This research utilises a combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies. In addressing the leadership effectiveness in Oman, it utilises and contextualises Analoui’s (2002) model of eight parameters for effectiveness as a basis to explore the awareness, perceptions, skills, organisational criteria, motivation, degree of demands and constraints, choices and opportunities, and dominant leadership philosophy for effectiveness. Based on the above, suggestions have been made to improve the content and context of senior managers’ work to increase their effectiveness in Oman. This first time study contributes to the present knowledge and understanding of the subject by contextualising the concept of ‘Managerial Effectiveness’ in Oman’s public sector. It concludes that better understanding of the subject requires attention being paid to the identified parameters of senior managers’ effectiveness. Moreover, consideration should be given to the influences and impact of the above parameters on personal, organisational and external contexts in Oman. These will lead to improved performance and organisational effectiveness as the whol
