    An Approach to Construct Dynamic Service Mashups using Lightweight Semantics

    Thousands of Web services have been available online, and mashups built upon them have been creating added value. However, mashups are mostly developed with a predefined set of services and components. The extensions to them always involve programming work. Furthermore, when a service is unavailable, it is challenging for mashups to smoothly switch to an alternative that others similar functionalities. To address these problems, this paper presents a novel approach to enable mashups to select and invoke semantic Web services on they. To extend a mashup with new semantic services, developers are only required to register and publish them as Linked Data. By refining the strategies of service selection, mashups can behave more adaptively and other higher fault-tolerance

    Design of a framework for automated service mashup creation and execution based on semantic reasoning

    Instead of building self-contained silos, applications are being broken down in independent structures able to offer a scoped service using open communication standards and encoding. Nowadays there is no automatic environment for the construction of new mashups from these reusable services. At the same time the designer of the mashup needs to establish the actual locations for deployment of the different components. This paper introduces the development of a framework focusing on the dynamic creation and execution of service mashups. By enriching the available building blocks with semantic descriptions, new service mashups are automatically composed through the use of planning algorithms. The composed mashups are automatically deployed on the available resources making optimal use of bandwidth, storage and computing power of the network and server elements. The system is extended with dynamic recovery from resource and network failures. This enrichment of business components and services with semantics, reasoning, and distributed deployment is demonstrated by means of an e-shop use case

    On the Role of Context in the Design of Mobile Mashups

    This paper presents a design methodology and an accompanying platform for the design and fast development of Context-Aware Mobile mashUpS (CAMUS). The approach is characterized by the role given to context as a first-class modeling dimension used to support i) the identification of the most adequate resources that can satisfy the users' situational needs and ii) the consequent tailoring at runtime of the provided data and functions. Context-based abstractions are exploited to generate models specifying how data returned by the selected services have to be merged and visualized by means of integrated views. Thanks to the adoption of Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) techniques, these models drive the flexible execution of the final mobile app on target mobile devices. A prototype of the platform, making use of novel and advanced Web and mobile technologies, is also illustrated

    Towards automated composition of convergent services: a survey

    A convergent service is defined as a service that exploits the convergence of communication networks and at the same time takes advantage of features of the Web. Nowadays, building up a convergent service is not trivial, because although there are significant approaches that aim to automate the service composition at different levels in the Web and Telecom domains, selecting the most appropriate approach for specific case studies is complex due to the big amount of involved information and the lack of technical considerations. Thus, in this paper, we identify the relevant phases for convergent service composition and explore the existing approaches and their associated technologies for automating each phase. For each technology, the maturity and results are analysed, as well as the elements that must be considered prior to their application in real scenarios. Furthermore, we provide research directions related to the convergent service composition phases

    Modeling the dynamics of web-based service and resource-oriented digital ecosystems

    The notion of digital species is broadened to include services and resources, special issues arise in modeling the dynamics and workflows with representations associated with these services and resources. To address these issues, this paper explores two different yet related approaches: the traditional BPEL-based workflow modeling approach and the Mashupbased Web approach. In this paper, we first demonstrate two examples of service-oriented and resource-oriented digital ecosystems on the Web. We then identify key issues pertinent to both types of DES. We discuss formal definition, specifications and issues of BPEL-based approach and Mashup-based modeling techniques with computational formalisms. Finally, we propose a hybrid approach to deal with modeling the dynamicsin processes associated with such Digital Ecosystems

    Web service composition: A survey of techniques and tools

    Web services are a consolidated reality of the modern Web with tremendous, increasing impact on everyday computing tasks. They turned the Web into the largest, most accepted, and most vivid distributed computing platform ever. Yet, the use and integration of Web services into composite services or applications, which is a highly sensible and conceptually non-trivial task, is still not unleashing its full magnitude of power. A consolidated analysis framework that advances the fundamental understanding of Web service composition building blocks in terms of concepts, models, languages, productivity support techniques, and tools is required. This framework is necessary to enable effective exploration, understanding, assessing, comparing, and selecting service composition models, languages, techniques, platforms, and tools. This article establishes such a framework and reviews the state of the art in service composition from an unprecedented, holistic perspective
