    Review of Electric Vehicle Charging Technologies, Configurations, and Architectures

    Electric Vehicles (EVs) are projected to be one of the major contributors to energy transition in the global transportation due to their rapid expansion. The EVs will play a vital role in achieving a sustainable transportation system by reducing fossil fuel dependency and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, high level of EVs integration into the distribution grid has introduced many challenges for the power grid operation, safety, and network planning due to the increase in load demand, power quality impacts and power losses. An increasing fleet of electric mobility requires the advanced charging systems to enhance charging efficiency and utility grid support. Innovative EV charging technologies are obtaining much attention in recent research studies aimed at strengthening EV adoption while providing ancillary services. Therefore, analysis of the status of EV charging technologies is significant to accelerate EV adoption with advanced control strategies to discover a remedial solution for negative grid impacts, enhance desired charging efficiency and grid support. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the current deployment of EV charging systems, international standards, charging configurations, EV battery technologies, architecture of EV charging stations, and emerging technical challenges. The charging systems require a dedicated converter topology, a control strategy and international standards for charging and grid interconnection to ensure optimum operation and enhance grid support. An overview of different charging systems in terms of onboard and off-board chargers, AC-DC and DC-DC converter topologies, and AC and DC-based charging station architectures are evaluated

    A comprehensive review on modular multilevel converters, submodule topologies, and modulation techniques

    The concept of the modular multilevel converter (MLC) has been raising interest in research in order to improve their performance and applicability. The potential of an MLC is enormous, with a great focus on medium- and high-voltage applications, such as solar photovoltaic and wind farms, electrified railway systems, or power distribution systems. This concept makes it possible to overcome the limitation of the semiconductors blocking voltages, presenting advantageous characteristics. However, the complexity of implementation and control presents added challenges. Thus, this paper aims to contribute with a critical and comparative analysis of the state-of-the-art aspects of this concept in order to maximize its potential. In this paper, different power electronics converter topologies that can be integrated into the MLC concept are presented, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each topology. Nevertheless, different modulation techniques used in an MLC are also presented and analyzed. Computational simulations of all the modulation techniques under analysis were developed, based on four cascaded full-bridge topologies. Considering the simulation results, a comparative analysis was possible to make regarding the symmetry of the synthesized waveforms, the harmonic content, and the power distribution in each submodule constituting the MLC.This work has been supported by FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, within the R&D Units Project Scope UIDB/00319/2020.     A novel power management and control design framework for resilient operation of microgrids

    This thesis concerns the investigation of the integration of the microgrid, a form of future electric grids, with renewable energy sources, and electric vehicles. It presents an innovative modular tri-level hierarchical management and control design framework for the future grid as a radical departure from the ‘centralised’ paradigm in conventional systems, by capturing and exploiting the unique characteristics of a host of new actors in the energy arena - renewable energy sources, storage systems and electric vehicles. The formulation of the tri-level hierarchical management and control design framework involves a new perspective on the problem description of the power management of EVs within a microgrid, with the consideration of, among others, the bi-directional energy flow between storage and renewable sources. The chronological structure of the tri-level hierarchical management operation facilitates a modular power management and control framework from three levels: Microgrid Operator (MGO), Charging Station Operator (CSO), and Electric Vehicle Operator (EVO). At the top level is the MGO that handles long-term decisions of balancing the power flow between the Distributed Generators (DGs) and the electrical demand for a restructure realistic microgrid model. Optimal scheduling operation of the DGs and EVs is used within the MGO to minimise the total combined operating and emission costs of a hybrid microgrid including the unit commitment strategy. The results have convincingly revealed that discharging EVs could reduce the total cost of the microgrid operation. At the middle level is the CSO that manages medium-term decisions of centralising the operation of aggregated EVs connected to the bus-bar of the microgrid. An energy management concept of charging or discharging the power of EVs in different situations includes the impacts of frequency and voltage deviation on the system, which is developed upon the MGO model above. Comprehensive case studies show that the EVs can act as a regulator of the microgrid, and can control their participating role by discharging active or reactive power in mitigating frequency and/or voltage deviations. Finally, at the low level is the EVO that handles the short-term decisions of decentralising the functioning of an EV and essential power interfacing circuitry, as well as the generation of low-level switching functions. EVO level is a novel Power and Energy Management System (PEMS), which is further structured into three modular, hierarchical processes: Energy Management Shell (EMS), Power Management Shell (PMS), and Power Electronic Shell (PES). The shells operate chronologically with a different object and a different period term. Controlling the power electronics interfacing circuitry is an essential part of the integration of EVs into the microgrid within the EMS. A modified, multi-level, H-bridge cascade inverter without the use of a main (bulky) inductor is proposed to achieve good performance, high power density, and high efficiency. The proposed inverter can operate with multiple energy resources connected in series to create a synergized energy system. In addition, the integration of EVs into a simulated microgrid environment via a modified multi-level architecture with a novel method of Space Vector Modulation (SVM) by the PES is implemented and validated experimentally. The results from the SVM implementation demonstrate a viable alternative switching scheme for high-performance inverters in EV applications. The comprehensive simulation results from the MGO and CSO models, together with the experimental results at the EVO level, not only validate the distinctive functionality of each layer within a novel synergy to harness multiple energy resources, but also serve to provide compelling evidence for the potential of the proposed energy management and control framework in the design of future electric grids. In fact, we are heading towards a future where energy will be more and more electrical: electrical vehicles, electrical motors, renewables, storage systems are now widespread. The ongoing energy transition poses new challenges for interfacing and integrating different power systems. The constraints of space, weight, reliability, performance, and autonomy for the electric system have increased the attention of scientific research in order to find more and more appropriate technological solutions. In this context, power converters and electric machines assume a key role in enabling higher performance of electrical power conversion. Consequently, the design and control of power converters and electric machines shall be developed accordingly to the requirements of the specific application, thus leading to more specialized solutions, with the aim of enhancing the reliability, fault tolerance, and flexibility of the next generation power systems

    Multi-busbar sub-module modular multilevel converter

    Modular multilevel converter (MMC) plays increasingly significant roles in large scale power electronics system including high voltage direct current (HVDC) system, static synchronous compensator (STATCOM), large scale energy storage, motor control, and so on, thanks to its advantages including modular configurations, reduced dv/dt, low total harmonic distortions, and low power losses. The classic sub-module (SM) topologies (e.g. half or full bridge types) all have in common their single connection arrangement between each SM in their series connection within a stack; i.e. a single busbar. This single busbar arrangement does come however with some drawbacks in terms of performance, reliability and flexibility. The lack of redundant switching states limits the potential optimization for the whole MMC. To solve the above mentioned issue, this thesis presents the control and performance of a new topology of SMs for MMCs, which uses multiple parallel connections between SMs and is referred to as multi-busbar sub-module (MBSM). Stacks made entirely of MBSMs can see improved functionalities such as pre-charging capability, capacitor paralleling, lower power losses, improved reliability, and a rational bypass mechanism in the event of SM failure. The soft-parallel mechanism is proposed to maintain voltage balancing without the requirement of additional spike current inductors. Despite the fact that the number of semiconductors in MBSM MMC has been doubled, semiconductor losses have been reduced to 80% of those in its counterpart. Simulation results have verified the characteristics of a FB MBSM MMC in an HVDC scenario. Several advanced control schemes for the control of the MBSM MMC are also investigated, including an algorithm to automatically generate independent variables state space models from linear electrical circuits, a model predictive control-based start-up controller to simplify the SM pre-charge procedure and at the same time improve the transient performance, and a reinforcement learningbased low-level controller to achieve low switching frequency operation of the MBSM MMC. The control schemes are validated by detailed theoretical analysis and simulation results. Besides, some MBSM applications in the operation scenarios of STATCOM are studied. Two topologies of delta-configured, partially rated energy storage (PRES) MBSM STATCOM and their corresponding low-level controllers are presented to improve the active power output capability. The soft parallel of MBSM is more effective in reactive power mode than active power mode due to the location of ES, which sees their current circulation limited to their own SM capacitor. The proposed controller for the MBSM STATCOM dynamically switches between two operation modes to reduce the converter losses over the extended range of active power. Simulation results confirm the earlier point, in that PRES-MBSMSTATCOM performs better at pure reactive power set-points and marginally better at high active power. This is explained by the fact that MBSM operates more frequently in soft-paralleling mode when the ES releases less power, i.e. reactive power set-points. Then the MBSM concept is further extended to a structure with more busbars, named multi-H-bridge SM, aiming at solving the current sharing issue of paralleled discrete SiC MOSFETs in large current applications. When compared to conventional FBSM constructed directly paralleled SiC MOSFETs, simulation results show that the current sharing performance against on-state resistance mismatch is improved and the switching loss is reduced. The same converter rating can be achieved with fewer MHSMs compared with Si IGBT SMs. Finally, the designing process of a benchtop-scale, low-voltage, open-source, and affordable hardware prototype of a MMC, the μMMC, is presented with a case study of a three-phase inverter-mode MMC. The proposed μMMC is configured as full bridge SMs type in the experiment, yet the flexible structure makes it capable to be configured as other SM types, including MBSMs. The cost for a single μMMC could be around 50 pounds. The control framework and concrete implementation are presented in detail. With the application of the μMMC, the STM32Cube Hardware Abstraction Layer, and the MATLAB/Simulink hardware support packages, it is possible to shorten the transition process from simulation to hardware realization to several hours. The experiment setup and results of a three-phase inverter mode MMC validate the proposed μMMC’s effectiveness, scalability, and convenience

    A multi-modular second life hybrid battery energy storage system for utility grid applications

    The modern grid system or the smart grid is likely to be populated with multiple distributed energy sources, e.g. wind power, PV power, Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PEV). It will also include a variety of linear and nonlinear loads. The intermittent nature of renewable energies like PV, wind turbine and increased penetration of Electric Vehicle (EV) makes the stable operation of utility grid system challenging. In order to ensure a stable operation of the utility grid system and to support smart grid functionalities such as, fault ride-through, frequency response, reactive power support, and mitigation of power quality issues, an energy storage system (ESS) could play an important role. A fast acting bidirectional energy storage system which can rapidly provide and absorb power and/or VARs for a sufficient time is a potentially valuable tool to support this functionality. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are one of a range suitable energy storage system because it can provide and absorb power for sufficient time as well as able to respond reasonably fast. Conventional BESS already exist on the grid system are made up primarily of new batteries. The cost of these batteries can be high which makes most BESS an expensive solution. In order to assist moving towards a low carbon economy and to reduce battery cost this work aims to research the opportunities for the re-use of batteries after their primary use in low and ultra-low carbon vehicles (EV/HEV) on the electricity grid system. This research aims to develop a new generation of second life battery energy storage systems (SLBESS) which could interface to the low/medium voltage network to provide necessary grid support in a reliable and in cost-effective manner. The reliability/performance of these batteries is not clear, but is almost certainly worse than a new battery. Manufacturers indicate that a mixture of gradual degradation and sudden failure are both possible and failure mechanisms are likely to be related to how hard the batteries were driven inside the vehicle. There are several figures from a number of sources including the DECC (Department of Energy and Climate Control) and Arup and Cenex reports indicate anything from 70,000 to 2.6 million electric and hybrid vehicles on the road by 2020. Once the vehicle battery has degraded to around 70-80% of its capacity it is considered to be at the end of its first life application. This leaves capacity available for a second life at a much cheaper cost than a new BESS Assuming a battery capability of around 5-18kWhr (MHEV 5kWh - BEV 18kWh battery) and approximate 10 year life span, this equates to a projection of battery storage capability available for second life of >1GWhrs by 2025. Moreover, each vehicle manufacturer has different specifications for battery chemistry, number and arrangement of battery cells, capacity, voltage, size etc. To enable research and investment in this area and to maximize the remaining life of these batteries, one of the design challenges is to combine these hybrid batteries into a grid-tie converter where their different performance characteristics, and parameter variation can be catered for and a hot swapping mechanism is available so that as a battery ends it second life, it can be replaced without affecting the overall system operation. This integration of either single types of batteries with vastly different performance capability or a hybrid battery system to a grid-tie 3 energy storage system is different to currently existing work on battery energy storage systems (BESS) which deals with a single type of battery with common characteristics. This thesis addresses and solves the power electronic design challenges in integrating second life hybrid batteries into a grid-tie energy storage unit for the first time. This study details a suitable multi-modular power electronic converter and its various switching strategies which can integrate widely different batteries to a grid-tie inverter irrespective of their characteristics, voltage levels and reliability. The proposed converter provides a high efficiency, enhanced control flexibility and has the capability to operate in different operational modes from the input to output. Designing an appropriate control system for this kind of hybrid battery storage system is also important because of the variation of battery types, differences in characteristics and different levels of degradations. This thesis proposes a generalised distributed power sharing strategy based on weighting function aims to optimally use a set of hybrid batteries according to their relative characteristics while providing the necessary grid support by distributing the power between the batteries. The strategy is adaptive in nature and varies as the individual battery characteristics change in real time as a result of degradation for example. A suitable bidirectional distributed control strategy or a module independent control technique has been developed corresponding to each mode of operation of the proposed modular converter. Stability is an important consideration in control of all power converters and as such this thesis investigates the control stability of the multi-modular converter in detailed. Many controllers use PI/PID based techniques with fixed control parameters. However, this is not found to be suitable from a stability point-of-view. Issues of control stability using this controller type under one of the operating modes has led to the development of an alternative adaptive and nonlinear Lyapunov based control for the modular power converter. Finally, a detailed simulation and experimental validation of the proposed power converter operation, power sharing strategy, proposed control structures and control stability issue have been undertaken using a grid connected laboratory based multi-modular hybrid battery energy storage system prototype. The experimental validation has demonstrated the feasibility of this new energy storage system operation for use in future grid applications

    Soft Open Point in Distribution Networks

    The main objective of this article is to present a comprehensive review of soft open point (SOP), an emerging power electronics technology to maximize future distribution networks’ (DNs) resiliency and flexibility as well as increase hosting capacity for distributed energy resources like photovoltaics and electric vehicles. The SOP is currently an active area of research and ongoing development of new control techniques for SOP and optimization algorithm for the optimal use of SOP in DNs produces new techniques until DN operators use it comprehensively in their systems. The motivation for this work is to present the research that has been completed for the SOP and summarize the duties of SOP in DNs according to the literature and propose advanced duties for SOP according to modern standards. Finally, future research directions are mentioned to pave the way for research in the coming years to drive the DNs towards more flexibility and ‘Robust’ from controllability, stability, and protection structure point of view.© 2020 Authors.     A review on DC collection grids for offshore wind farms with HVDC transmission system

    Abstract: Traditionally, the internal network composition of offshore wind farms consists of alternating current (AC) collection grid; all outputs of wind energy conversion units (WECUs) on a wind farm are aggregated to an AC bus. Each WECU includes: a wind-turbine plus mechanical parts, a generator including electronic controller, and a huge 50-or 60-Hz power transformer. For a DC collection grid, all outputs of WECUs are aggregated to a DC bus; consequently, the transformer in each WECU is replaced by a power converter or rectifier. The converter is more compact and smaller in size compared to the transformer. Thus reducing the size and weight of the WECUs, and also simplifying the wind farm structure. Actually, the use of offshore AC collection grids instead of offshore DC collection grids is mainly motivated by the availability of control and protection devices. However, efficient solutions to control and protect DC grids including HVDC transmission systems have already been addressed. Presently, there are no operational wind farms with DC collection grids, only theoretical and small-scale prototypes are being investigated worldwide. Therefore, a suitable configuration of the DC collection grid, which has been practically verified, is not available yet. This paper discussed some of the main components required for a DC collection grid including: the wind-turbine-generator models, the control and protection methods, the offshore platform structure, and the DC-grid feeder configurations. The key component of a DC collection grid is the power converter; therefore, the paper also reviews some topologies of power converter suitable for DC grid applications
