Collaborative recommendations with content-based filters for cultural activities via a scalable event distribution platform
Nowadays, most people have limited leisure time and the offer of (cultural) activities to spend this time is enormous. Consequently, picking the most appropriate events becomes increasingly difficult for end-users. This complexity of choice reinforces the necessity of filtering systems that assist users in finding and selecting relevant events. Whereas traditional filtering tools enable e.g. the use of keyword-based or filtered searches, innovative recommender systems draw on user ratings, preferences, and metadata describing the events. Existing collaborative recommendation techniques, developed for suggesting web-shop products or audio-visual content, have difficulties with sparse rating data and can not cope at all with event-specific restrictions like availability, time, and location. Moreover, aggregating, enriching, and distributing these events are additional requisites for an optimal communication channel. In this paper, we propose a highly-scalable event recommendation platform which considers event-specific characteristics. Personal suggestions are generated by an advanced collaborative filtering algorithm, which is more robust on sparse data by extending user profiles with presumable future consumptions. The events, which are described using an RDF/OWL representation of the EventsML-G2 standard, are categorized and enriched via smart indexing and open linked data sets. This metadata model enables additional content-based filters, which consider event-specific characteristics, on the recommendation list. The integration of these different functionalities is realized by a scalable and extendable bus architecture. Finally, focus group conversations were organized with external experts, cultural mediators, and potential end-users to evaluate the event distribution platform and investigate the possible added value of recommendations for cultural participation
A Layered Software Architecture for the Management of a Manufacturing Company
In this paper we describe a layered software architecture in the management of a manufactur-ing company that intensively uses computer technology. Application tools, new and legacy, after the updating, operate in a context of an open web oriented architecture. The software architecture enables the integration and interoperability among all tools that support business processes. Manufacturing Executive System and Text Mining tools are excellent interfaces, the former both for internal production and management processes and the latter for external processes coming from the market. In this way, it is possible to implement, a computer integrated factory, flexible and agile, that immediately responds to customer requirements.ICT, Service Oriented Architecture, Web Services, Computer-Integrated Factory, Application Software
Interoperable multimedia metadata through similarity-based semantic web service discovery
The increasing availability of multimedia (MM) resources, Web services as well as content, on the Web raises the need to automatically discover and process resources out of distributed repositories. However, the heterogeneity of applied metadata schemas and vocabularies â ranging from XML-based schemas such as MPEG-7 to formal knowledge representation approaches â raises interoperability problems. To enable MM metadata interoperability by means of automated similarity-computation, we propose a hybrid representation approach which combines symbolic MM metadata representations with a grounding in so-called Conceptual Spaces (CS). In that, we enable automatic computation of similarities across distinct metadata vocabularies and schemas in terms of spatial distances in shared CS. Moreover, such a vector-based approach is particularly well suited to represent MM metadata, given that a majority of MM parameters is provided in terms of quantified metrics. To prove the feasibility of our approach, we provide a prototypical implementation facilitating similarity-based discovery of publicly available MM services, aiming at federated MM content retrieval out of heterogeneous repositories
Semantic technologies: from niche to the mainstream of Web 3? A comprehensive framework for web Information modelling and semantic annotation
Context: Web information technologies developed and applied in the last decade
have considerably changed the way web applications operate and have
revolutionised information management and knowledge discovery. Social
technologies, user-generated classification schemes and formal semantics have a
far-reaching sphere of influence. They promote collective intelligence, support
interoperability, enhance sustainability and instigate innovation.
Contribution: The research carried out and consequent publications follow the
various paradigms of semantic technologies, assess each approach, evaluate its
efficiency, identify the challenges involved and propose a comprehensive framework for web information modelling and semantic annotation, which is the thesisâ original contribution to knowledge. The proposed framework assists web information
modelling, facilitates semantic annotation and information retrieval, enables system interoperability and enhances information quality.
Implications: Semantic technologies coupled with social media and end-user
involvement can instigate innovative influence with wide organisational implications that can benefit a considerable range of industries. The scalable and sustainable business models of social computing and the collective intelligence of organisational social media can be resourcefully paired with internal research and knowledge from interoperable information repositories, back-end databases and legacy systems.
Semantified information assets can free human resources so that they can be used to better serve business development, support innovation and increase productivity

Multimedia authoring, development environments, and digital video editing
Multimedia systems integrate text, audio, video, graphics, and other media and allow them to be utilized in a combined and interactive manner. Using this exciting and rapidly developing technology, multimedia applications can provide extensive benefits in a variety of arenas, including research, education, medicine, and commerce. While there are many commercial multimedia development packages, the easy and fast creation of a useful, full-featured multimedia document is not yet a straightforward task.
This paper addresses issues in the development of multimedia documents, ranging from user-interface tools that manipulate multimedia documents to multimedia communication technologies such as compression, digital video editing and information retrieval. It outlines the basic steps in the multimedia authoring process and some of the requirements that need to be met by multimedia development environments. It also presents the role of video, an essential component of multimedia systems and the role of programming in digital video editing. A model is described for remote access of distributed video. The paper concludes with a discussion of future research directions and new uses of multimedia documents
