    A Transformational creativity tool to support musical composition

    In this paper we use the idea of conceptual space introduced by Boden and redefine some properties such appropriateness and relevance that facilitate the computational implementation of the transformational creativity mechanism. While appropriateness can only be evaluated by an expert, relevance can be objectively measured for any spectator. Computational creativity is based on the relationship between appropriateness and relevance of a concept, and therefore a computational system can be used to support this task.     A contribution to the incorporation of sociability and creativity skills to computers and robots

    This dissertation contains the research and work completed by the PhD candidate on the incorporation of sociability and creativity skills to computers and robots. Both skills can be directly related with empathy, which is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. In this form, this research can be contextualized in the framework of recent developments towards the achievement of empathy machines. The first challenge at hands refers to designing pioneering techniques based on the use of social robots to improve user experience interacting with them. In particular, research focus is on eliminating or minimizing pain and anxiety as well as loneliness and stress of long-term hospitalized child patients. This challenge is approached by developing a cloud-based robotics architecture to effectively develop complex tasks related to hospitalized children assistance. More specifically, a multiagent learning system is introduced based on a combination of machine learning and cloud computing using low-cost robots (Innvo labs's Pleo rb). Moreover, a wireless communication system is also developed for the Pleo robot in order to help the health professional who conducts therapy with the child, monitoring, understanding, and controlling Pleo behavior at any moment. As a second challenge, a new formulation of the concept of creativity is proposed in order to empower computers with. Based on previous well established theories from Boden and Wiggins, this thesis redefines the formal mechanism of exploratory and transformational creativity in a way which facilitates the computational implementation of these mechanisms in Creativity Support Systems. The proposed formalization is applied and validated on two real cases: the first, about chocolate designing, in which a novel and flavorful combination of chocolate and fruit is generated. The second case is about the composition of a single voice tune of reel using ABC notation

    Designing constraints: composing and performing with digital musical systems

    This paper investigates two central terms in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) – affordances and constraints – and studies their relevance to the design and understanding of digital musical systems. It argues that in the analysis of complex systems, such as new interfaces for musical expression (NIME), constraints are a more productive analytical tool than the common HCI usage of affordances. Constraints are seen as limitations enabling the musician to encapsulate a specific search space of both physical and compositional gestures, proscribing complexity in favor of a relatively simple set of rules that engender creativity. By exploring the design of three different digital musical systems, the paper defines constraints as a core attribute of mapping, whether in instruments or compositional systems. The paper describes the aspiration for designing constraints as twofold: to save time, as musical performance is typically a real-time process, and to minimize the performer’s cognitive load. Finally, it discusses skill and virtuosity in the realm of new musical interfaces for musical expression with regard to constraints

    When conventional procedures are no longer the rule for application: design as a discipline opens up to new possibilities

    This paper discusses the development of the prototype application ‘LabanAssist’. It looks at the design rationale used for the creation of what is fundamentally a system for recording dance knowledge on a score, as identifiable and replicable signs and symbols. A system made necessary because the conventions of other established disciplines, such as engineering and computer science practices, were no longer considered to be effective alone, in facilitating the production of well-designed cultural artefacts (Calvert, Fox, Ryman, & Wilke, 2005; Ebenreuter, 2005). It is important to ask how can we understand design as a discipline amongst other fields of study with longstanding conventions and traditions and if the discipline of design offers effective ways of thinking about the creation and art of making products or services for the enhancement of the human experience? Is design a discipline because it adheres to existing and established rules of interdisciplinary knowledge from which it draws, or is it a discipline in its own right that as a significant field of intellectual development utilizes interdisciplinary knowledge as a basis for creativity and invention?” While there is no simple answer to these questions, the design approach adopted for the development of the prototype application ‘LabanAssist’ offers a working example in which the central theme of grammar, or more particularly the rules of a language, depart from the conventional use for its practical application. This application is one in which a literal understanding of grammar is no longer seen as an adequate basis for the generation of dance knowledge expressed via symbolic writing systems. Instead, this research focuses on the way in which the figurative aspects of language can be represented in the design of an interface to orient user thinking and facilitate the generation of diverse movement compositions.     Creating Persian-like music using computational intelligence

    Dastgāh are modal systems in traditional Persian music. Each Dastgāh consists of a group of melodies called Gushé, classified in twelve groups about a century ago (Farhat, 1990). Prior to that time, musical pieces were transferred through oral tradition. The traditional music productions revolve around the existing Dastgāh, and Gushe pieces. In this thesis computational intelligence tools are employed in creating novel Dastgāh-like music.There are three types of creativity: combinational, exploratory, and transformational (Boden, 2000). In exploratory creativity, a conceptual space is navigated for discovering new forms. Sometimes the exploration results in transformational creativity. This is due to meaningful alterations happening on one or more of the governing dimensions of an item. In combinational creativity new links are established between items not previously connected. Boden stated that all these types of creativity can be implemented using artificial intelligence.Various tools, and techniques are employed, in the research reported in this thesis, for generating Dastgāh-like music. Evolutionary algorithms are responsible for navigating the space of sequences of musical motives. Aesthetical critics are employed for constraining the search space in exploratory (and hopefully transformational) type of creativity. Boltzmann machine models are applied for assimilating some of the mechanisms involved in combinational creativity. The creative processes involved are guided by aesthetical critics, some of which are derived from a traditional Persian music database.In this project, Cellular Automata (CA) are the main pattern generators employed to produce raw creative materials. Various methodologies are suggested for extracting features from CA progressions and mapping them to musical space, and input to audio synthesizers. The evaluation of the results of this thesis are assisted by publishing surveys which targeted both public and professional audiences. The generated audio samples are evaluated regarding their Dastgāh-likeness, and the level of creativity of the systems involved

    Unmasking the noise within: an exploration of the integration of music and mental processing and its effect on enhanced learning

    Many research studies have focused on aspects of music, mental processing, and education, but few have integrated music with mental health practices and theory in order to understand the potential effects of enhanced learning. This research applied a biopsychosocial (biological, psychological, and social) approach to provide a holistic view of the relationship between music and mental processing. In particular, this phenomenological study of non-musicians and professional musicians demonstrated the significance of music as a universal language. Additionally, the intrinsic and extrinsic effects of music are shown to enhance learning for the artist and listeners. The findings suggest that music can enhance our learning and support understandings of human behavior, oneself, and ultimately life. This study found that the composition of music initially captures a listener’s attention—whether it is the vibration of the rhythm, melody, tempo, or harmony—whereas the lyrics ignite the listener\u27s personal experiences and memories and provide a pathway to transform thoughts and mood and take the listener on an emotional journey

    The creative turn: new challenges for computing

    This is a call to action. The time is ripe for a creative turn in computing. This article sets out a vision of what Creative Computing is and what it might become. It distinguishes between Creative Computing and computational creativity, and then lays out a theoretical framework. It proposes that Creative Computing is mainly happening in software. It compares the process of software development with the process of artistic creation and looks at ways in which the two might productively overlap or merge. It considers the levels of abstraction required in both and interrogates both their semantics and underlying principles from a philosophical and practical point of view. Finally, it sets three types of new challenges for Creative Computing in terms of software

    This thesis argues that a systems and design thinking approach to education can have a transformational affect on individuals and organizations. This thesis looks at the Curtis Institute of Music and how the school is challenging students to expand their thinking by involving a diverse group of stakeholders in the complete redesign of performance experience. A description of an interactive planning and idealized design project, called the Curtis Leadership Workshop, is presented. This thesis specifically provides an overview of the theory, model and applied methodology, and an account of the preparation for and first critical steps of the project. Outcomes of critical steps are presented and a number of research questions for a formal impact analysis are proposed
