    The Submodular Santa Claus Problem in the Restricted Assignment Case

    The submodular Santa Claus problem was introduced in a seminal work by Goemans, Harvey, Iwata, and Mirrokni (SODA\u2709) as an application of their structural result. In the mentioned problem n unsplittable resources have to be assigned to m players, each with a monotone submodular utility function f_i. The goal is to maximize min_i f_i(S_i) where S?,...,S_m is a partition of the resources. The result by Goemans et al. implies a polynomial time O(n^{1/2 +?})-approximation algorithm. Since then progress on this problem was limited to the linear case, that is, all f_i are linear functions. In particular, a line of research has shown that there is a polynomial time constant approximation algorithm for linear valuation functions in the restricted assignment case. This is the special case where each player is given a set of desired resources ?_i and the individual valuation functions are defined as f_i(S) = f(S ? ?_i) for a global linear function f. This can also be interpreted as maximizing min_i f(S_i) with additional assignment restrictions, i.e., resources can only be assigned to certain players. In this paper we make comparable progress for the submodular variant: If f is a monotone submodular function, we can in polynomial time compute an O(log log(n))-approximate solution

    Santa Claus, Machine Scheduling and Bipartite Hypergraphs

    Here we discuss two related discrete optimization problems, a prominent problem in scheduling theory, makespan minimization on unrelated parallel machines, and the other a fair allocation problem, the Santa Claus problem. In each case the objective is to make the least well off participant as well off as possible, and in each case we have complexity results that bound how close we may estimate optimal values of worst-case instances in polytime. We explore some of the techniques that have been used in obtaining approximation algorithms or optimal value guarantees for these problems, as well as those involved in getting hardness results, emphasizing the relationships between the problems. A framework for decisional variants of approximation and optimal value estimation for optimization problems is introduced to clarify the discussion. Also discussed are bipartite hypergraphs, which correspond naturally to these problems, including a discussion of Haxell's Theorem for bipartite hypergraphs. Conditions for edge covering in bipartite hypergraphs are introduced and their implications investigated. The conditions are motivated by analogy to Haxell's Theorem and from generalizing conditions that arose from bipartite hypergraphs associated with machine scheduling

    Approximating Nash social welfare under rado valuations

    We consider the problem of approximating maximum Nash social welfare (NSW) while allocating a set of indivisible items to n agents. The NSW is a popular objective that provides a balanced tradeoff between the often conflicting requirements of fairness and efficiency, defined as the weighted geometric mean of the agents' valuations. For the symmetric additive case of the problem, where agents have the same weight with additive valuations, the first constant-factor approximation algorithm was obtained in 2015. Subsequent work has obtained constant-factor approximation algorithms for the symmetric case under mild generalizations of additive, and O(n)-approximation algorithms for subadditive valuations and for the asymmetric case. In this paper, we make significant progress towards both symmetric and asymmetric NSW problems. We present the first constant-factor approximation algorithm for the symmetric case under Rado valuations. Rado valuations form a general class of valuation functions that arise from maximum cost independent matching problems, including as special cases assignment (OXS) valuations and weighted matroid rank functions. Furthermore, our approach also gives the first constant-factor approximation algorithm for the asymmetric case under Rado valuations, provided that the maximum ratio between the weights is bounded by a constant

    Approximation Schemes for Machine Scheduling

    In the classical problem of makespan minimization on identical parallel machines, or machine scheduling for short, a set of jobs has to be assigned to a set of machines. The jobs have a processing time and the goal is to minimize the latest finishing time of the jobs. Machine scheduling is well known to be NP-hard and thus there is no polynomial time algorithm for this problem that is guaranteed to find an optimal solution unless P=NP. There is, however, a polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS) for machine scheduling, that is, a family of approximation algorithms with ratios arbitrarily close to one. Whether a problem admits an approximation scheme or not is a fundamental question in approximation theory. In the present work, we consider this question for several variants of machine scheduling. We study the problem where the machines are partitioned into a constant number of types and the processing time of the jobs is also dependent on the machine type. We present so called efficient PTAS (EPTAS) results for this problem and variants thereof. We show that certain cases of machine scheduling with assignment restrictions do not admit a PTAS unless P=NP. Moreover, we introduce a graph framework based on the restrictions of the jobs and use it in the design of approximation schemes for other variants. We introduce an enhanced integer programming formulation for assignment problems, show that it can be efficiently solved, and use it in the EPTAS design for variants of machine scheduling with setup times. For one of the problems, we show that there is also a PTAS in the case with uniform machines, where machines have speeds influencing the processing times of the jobs. We consider cases in which each job requires a certain amount of a shared renewable resource and the processing time is depended on the amount of resource it receives or not.     Fuelling the zero-emissions road freight of the future: routing of mobile fuellers

    The future of zero-emissions road freight is closely tied to the sufficient availability of new and clean fuel options such as electricity and Hydrogen. In goods distribution using Electric Commercial Vehicles (ECVs) and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles (HFCVs) a major challenge in the transition period would pertain to their limited autonomy and scarce and unevenly distributed refuelling stations. One viable solution to facilitate and speed up the adoption of ECVs/HFCVs by logistics, however, is to get the fuel to the point where it is needed (instead of diverting the route of delivery vehicles to refuelling stations) using "Mobile Fuellers (MFs)". These are mobile battery swapping/recharging vans or mobile Hydrogen fuellers that can travel to a running ECV/HFCV to provide the fuel they require to complete their delivery routes at a rendezvous time and space. In this presentation, new vehicle routing models will be presented for a third party company that provides MF services. In the proposed problem variant, the MF provider company receives routing plans of multiple customer companies and has to design routes for a fleet of capacitated MFs that have to synchronise their routes with the running vehicles to deliver the required amount of fuel on-the-fly. This presentation will discuss and compare several mathematical models based on different business models and collaborative logistics scenarios
