These requirements impose strict laws regarding the Low Voltage Ride Though (LVRT) and High Voltage Ride Though (HVRT) capabilities of wind turbines during voltage disturbances. The main aim of this paper is to propose LVRT and HVRT strategies that allow wind systems to remain connected during severe grid voltage disturbances. Power quality issues associated with harmonics and inter-harmonics are also discussed and a control scheme for the grid-side converter is proposed to make the Wind Energy Conversion System insensitive to external disturbances and parametric variations. The Selective Harmonic Elimination Pulse Width Modulation technique based on Genetic Algorithm optimization is employed to overcome over-modulation problems, reduce the amplitudes of harmonics, and thus reduce the Total Harmonic Distortion in the current and voltage waveforms. Furthermore, to compensate for the fluctuations of the wind speed due to turbulence at the blades of the turbine, a fuzzy Proportional-Integral-Derivative controller with adaptive gains is proposed to control the converter on the generator side.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    A Review of Control Techniques for Wind Energy Conversion System

    Wind energy is the most efficient and advanced form of renewable energy (RE) in recent decades, and an effective controller is required to regulate the power generated by wind energy. This study provides an overview of state-of-the-art control strategies for wind energy conversion systems (WECS). Studies on the pitch angle controller, the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller, the machine side controller (MSC), and the grid side controller (GSC) are reviewed and discussed. Related works are analyzed, including evolution, software used, input and output parameters, specifications, merits, and limitations of different control techniques. The analysis shows that better performance can be obtained by the adaptive and soft-computing based pitch angle controller and MPPT controller, the field-oriented control for MSC, and the voltage-oriented control for GSC. This study provides an appropriate benchmark for further wind energy research

    IMPROVEMENT OF POWER QUALITY OF HYBRID GRID BY NON-LINEAR CONTROLLED DEVICE CONSIDERING TIME DELAYS AND CYBER-ATTACKS

    Power Quality is defined as the ability of electrical grid to supply a clean and stable power supply. Steady-state disturbances such as harmonics, faults, voltage sags and swells, etc., deteriorate the power quality of the grid. To ensure constant voltage and frequency to consumers, power quality should be improved and maintained at a desired level. Although several methods are available to improve the power quality in traditional power grids, significant challenges exist in modern power grids, such as non-linearity, time delay and cyber-attacks issues, which need to be considered and solved. This dissertation proposes novel control methods to address the mentioned challenges and thus to improve the power quality of modern hybrid grids.In hybrid grids, the first issue is faults occurring at different points in the system. To overcome this issue, this dissertation proposes non-linear controlled methods like the Fuzzy Logic controlled Thyristor Switched Capacitor (TSC), Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) controlled TSC, and Static Non-Linear controlled TSC. The next issue is the time delay introduced in the network due to its complexities and various computations required. This dissertation proposes two new methods such as the Fuzzy Logic Controller and Modified Predictor to minimize adverse effects of time delays on the power quality enhancement. The last and major issue is the cyber-security aspect of the hybrid grid. This research analyzes the effects of cyber-attacks on various components such as the Energy Storage System (ESS), the automatic voltage regulator (AVR) of the synchronous generator, the grid side converter (GSC) of the wind generator, and the voltage source converter (VSC) of Photovoltaic (PV) system, located in a hybrid power grid. Also, this dissertation proposes two new techniques such as a Non-Linear (NL) controller and a Proportional-Integral (PI) controller for mitigating the adverse effects of cyber-attacks on the mentioned devices, and a new detection and mitigation technique based on the voltage threshold for the Supercapacitor Energy System (SES). Simulation results obtained through the MATLAB/Simulink software show the effectiveness of the proposed new control methods for power quality improvement.     Development Schemes of Electric Vehicle Charging Protocols and Implementation of Algorithms for Fast Charging under Dynamic Environments Leading towards Grid-to-Vehicle Integration

    This thesis focuses on the development of electric vehicle (EV) charging protocols under a dynamic environment using artificial intelligence (AI), to achieve Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) integration and promote automobile electrification. The proposed framework comprises three major complementary steps. Firstly, the DC fast charging scheme is developed under different ambient conditions such as temperature and relative humidity. Subsequently, the transient performance of the controller is improved while implementing the proposed DC fast charging scheme. Finally, various novel techno-economic scenarios and case studies are proposed to integrate EVs with the utility grid. The proposed novel scheme is composed of hierarchical stages; In the first stage, an investigation of the temperature or/and relative humidity impact on the charging process is implemented using the constant current-constant voltage (CC-CV) protocol. Where the relative humidity impact on the charging process was not investigated or mentioned in the literature survey. This was followed by the feedforward backpropagation neural network (FFBP-NN) classification algorithm supported by the statistical analysis of an instant charging current sample of only 10 seconds at any ambient condition. Then the FFBP-NN perfectly estimated the EV’s battery terminal voltage, charging current, and charging interval time with an error of 1% at the corresponding temperature and relative humidity. Then, a nonlinear identification model of the lithium-polymer ion battery dynamic behaviour is introduced based on the Hammerstein-Wiener (HW) model with an experimental error of 1.1876%. Compared with the CC-CV fast charging protocol, intelligent novel techniques based on the multistage charging current protocol (MSCC) are proposed using the Cuckoo optimization algorithm (COA). COA is applied to the Hierarchical technique (HT) and the Conditional random technique (CRT). Compared with the CC-CV charging protocol, an improvement in the charging efficiency of 8% and 14.1% was obtained by the HT and the CRT, respectively, in addition to a reduction in energy losses of 7.783% and 10.408% and a reduction in charging interval time of 18.1% and 22.45%, respectively. The stated charging protocols have been implemented throughout a smart charger. The charger comprises a DC-DC buck converter controlled by an artificial neural network predictive controller (NNPC), trained and supported by the long short-term memory neural network (LSTM). The LSTM network model was utilized in the offline forecasting of the PV output power, which was fed to the NNPC as the training data. The NNPC–LSTM controller was compared with the fuzzy logic (FL) and the conventional PID controllers and perfectly ensured that the optimum transient performance with a minimum battery terminal voltage ripple reached 1 mV with a very high-speed response of 1 ms in reaching the predetermined charging current stages. Finally, to alleviate the power demand pressure of the proposed EV charging framework on the utility grid, a novel smart techno-economic operation of an electric vehicle charging station (EVCS) in Egypt controlled by the aggregator is suggested based on a hierarchical model of multiple scenarios. The deterministic charging scheduling of the EVs is the upper stage of the model to balance the generated and consumed power of the station. Mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) is used to solve the first stage, where the EV charging peak demand value is reduced by 3.31% (4.5 kW). The second challenging stage is to maximize the EVCS profit whilst minimizing the EV charging tariff. In this stage, MILP and Markov Decision Process Reinforcement Learning (MDP-RL) resulted in an increase in EVCS revenue by 28.88% and 20.10%, respectively. Furthermore, the grid-to-vehicle (G2V) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies are applied to the stochastic EV parking across the day, controlled by the aggregator to alleviate the utility grid load demand. The aggregator determined the number of EVs that would participate in the electric power trade and sets the charging/discharging capacity level for each EV. The proposed model minimized the battery degradation cost while maximizing the revenue of the EV owner and minimizing the utility grid load demand based on the genetic algorithm (GA). The implemented procedure reduced the degradation cost by an average of 40.9256%, increased the EV SOC by 27%, and ensured an effective grid stabilization service by shaving the load demand to reach a predetermined grid average power across the day where the grid load demand decreased by 26.5% (371 kW)

    Optimized PID Controller of DC-DC Buck Converter based on Archimedes Optimization Algorithm

    This research assesses the suitability of the Archimedes Optimization Algorithm (AOA) as a metaheuristic technique to fine-tune a PID controller in a closed-loop DC-DC buck converter. The converter's core function is to regulate output voltage, ensuring stability despite load fluctuations and input voltage changes.  The operational effectiveness of the converter hinges significantly on the gain settings of the PID controller and determining the optimal gain setting for the PID controller is a non-trivial task. For robust performance, the PID controller necessitates optimal gain settings, attainable through metaheuristic optimization. The algorithm aids in identifying ideal proportional, integral, and derivative gains based on varying load conditions. Leveraging the metaheuristic algorithm, the PID controller is optimized to minimize voltage errors, reduce overshoot, and enhance response time. The proposed PID controller, optimized using AOA, is contrasted with PID controllers tuned via alternative algorithms including the hybrid Nelder-Mead method (AEONM), artificial ecosystem-based optimization (AEO), differential evolution (DE), and particle swarm optimizer (PSO). Performance evaluation involves injecting a voltage disturbance into the buck converter with load changes of up to 20%. Results demonstrate the superiority of the AOA-optimized PID controller in voltage recovery.  It demonstrates a faster response time and outstanding voltage regulation performance, while also exhibiting minimal performance degradation during load changes. This study concludes that the AOA optimization algorithm surpasses other methods in tuning the PID controller for closed-loop DC-DC buck converters

    Prognostics and health management of power electronics

    Prognostics and health management (PHM) is a major tool enabling systems to evaluate their reliability in real-time operation. Despite ground-breaking advances in most engineering and scientific disciplines during the past decades, reliability engineering has not seen significant breakthroughs or noticeable advances. Therefore, self-awareness of the embedded system is also often required in the sense that the system should be able to assess its own health state and failure records, and those of its main components, and take action appropriately. This thesis presents a radically new prognostics approach to reliable system design that will revolutionise complex power electronic systems with robust prognostics capability enhanced Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT) in applications where reliability is significantly challenging and critical. The IGBT is considered as one of the components that is mainly damaged in converters and experiences a number of failure mechanisms, such as bond wire lift off, die attached solder crack, loose gate control voltage, etc. The resulting effects mentioned are complex. For instance, solder crack growth results in increasing the IGBT’s thermal junction which becomes a source of heat turns to wire bond lift off. As a result, the indication of this failure can be seen often in increasing on-state resistance relating to the voltage drop between on-state collector-emitter. On the other hand, hot carrier injection is increased due to electrical stress. Additionally, IGBTs are components that mainly work under high stress, temperature and power consumptions due to the higher range of load that these devices need to switch. This accelerates the degradation mechanism in the power switches in discrete fashion till reaches failure state which fail after several hundred cycles. To this end, exploiting failure mechanism knowledge of IGBTs and identifying failure parameter indication are background information of developing failure model and prognostics algorithm to calculate remaining useful life (RUL) along with ±10% confidence bounds. A number of various prognostics models have been developed for forecasting time to failure of IGBTs and the performance of the presented estimation models has been evaluated based on two different evaluation metrics. The results show significant improvement in health monitoring capability for power switches.Furthermore, the reliability of the power switch was calculated and conducted to fully describe health state of the converter and reconfigure the control parameter using adaptive algorithm under degradation and load mission limitation. As a result, the life expectancy of devices has been increased. These all allow condition-monitoring facilities to minimise stress levels and predict future failure which greatly reduces the likelihood of power switch failures in the first place
