A design recording framework to facilitate knowledge sharing in collaborative software engineering
This paper describes an environment that allows a development team to share knowledge about software artefacts
by recording decisions and rationales as well as supporting the team in formulating and maintaining design constraints. It explores the use of multi-dimensional design spaces for capturing various issues arising during development and presenting this meta-information using a network of views. It describes a framework to underlie the collaborative environment and shows the supporting architecture and its implementation. It addresses how the artefacts and their meta-information are captured in a non-invasive way and shows how an artefact repository is embedded to store and manage the artefacts
RedFeather- resource exhibition and discovery: a lightweight micro-repository for resource sharing
Open Educational Resources (OERs) depend on being hosted in repositories so that they can be effectively viewed, managed, searched and indexed online. Content – especially multimedia content – that is not hosted in this way has no metadata and is effectively dark to the wider community. Similarly content that is not described properly, and with appropriate licenses, is of limited use. This is a challenge for small-scale contributors, such as individuals and small projects, as the overhead of setting up and administrating a content repository can be prohibitive.In this paper we propose RedFeather, a micro-repository, as a solution to this problem. RedFeather is a simple and straightforward server-side tool that requires zero to little configuration, but that provides the core functionality of a fully-fledged OER repository, including: resource pages with inline preview, a resource manager with streamlined workflow, and views of the resource in OER critical formats (including RDF, JSON, and RSS). RedFeather is fully customizable, with a flexible plugin architecture and configurable templates, but also works without any customization as a single php script file uploaded to a web server. The goal of a micro-repository like RedFeather is both to enable small-scale contributors to easily join the OER community, and to act as a intermediate step for larger contributors beginning a collection, or requiring a temporary home for their resources while a more substantial repository is developed. Our hope is that by lowering the barriers to participation, RedFeather can help the OER community to take advantage of the long tail of small to medium sized content creators
Support for collaborative component-based software engineering
Collaborative system composition during design has been poorly supported by traditional CASE tools (which have usually concentrated on supporting individual projects) and almost exclusively focused on static composition. Little support for maintaining large distributed collections of heterogeneous software components across a number of projects has been developed. The CoDEEDS project addresses the collaborative determination, elaboration, and evolution of design spaces that describe both static and dynamic compositions of software components from sources such as component libraries, software service directories, and reuse repositories. The GENESIS project has focussed, in the development of OSCAR, on the creation and maintenance of large software artefact repositories. The most recent extensions are explicitly addressing the provision of cross-project global views of large software collections and historical views of individual artefacts within a collection. The long-term benefits of such support can only be realised if OSCAR and CoDEEDS are widely adopted and steps to facilitate this are described.
This book continues to provide a forum, which a recent book, Software Evolution with UML and XML, started, where expert insights are presented on the subject.
In that book, initial efforts were made to link together three current phenomena: software evolution, UML, and XML. In this book, focus will be on the practical side of linking them, that is, how UML and XML and their related methods/tools can assist software evolution in practice.
Considering that nowadays software starts evolving before it is delivered, an apparent feature for software evolution is that it happens over all stages and over all aspects.
Therefore, all possible techniques should be explored. This book explores techniques based on UML/XML and a combination of them with other techniques (i.e., over all techniques from theory to tools).

assessing, coding, validating, design recovering, program understanding, and reusing.

Italian center for Astronomical Archives publishing solution: modular and distributed
The Italian center for Astronomical Archives tries to provide astronomical
data resources as interoperable services based on IVOA standards. Its VO
expertise and knowledge comes from active participation within IVOA and VO at
European and international level, with a double-fold goal: learn from the
collaboration and provide inputs to the community. The first solution to build
an easy to configure and maintain resource publisher conformant to VO standards
proved to be too optimistic. For this reason it has been necessary to re-think
the architecture with a modular system built around the messaging concept,
where each modular component speaks to the other interested parties through a
system of broker-managed queues. The first implemented protocol, the Simple
Cone Search, shows the messaging task architecture connecting the parametric
HTTP interface to the database backend access module, the logging module, and
allows multiple cone search resources to be managed together through a
configuration manager module. Even if relatively young, it already proved the
flexibility required by the overall system when the database backend changed
from MySQL to PostgreSQL+PgSphere. Another implementation test has been made to
leverage task distribution over multiple servers to serve simultaneously: FITS
cubes direct linking, cubes cutout and cubes positional merging. Currently the
implementation of the SIA-2.0 standard protocol is ongoing while for TAP we
will be adapting the TAPlib library. Alongside these tools a first
administration tool (TASMAN) has been developed to ease the build up and
maintenance of TAP_SCHEMA-ta including also ObsCore maintenance capability.
Future work will be devoted at widening the range of VO protocols covered by
the set of available modules, improve the configuration management and develop
