    Exact and heuristic allocation of multi-kernel applications to multi-FPGA platforms

    FPGA-based accelerators demonstrated high energy efficiency compared to GPUs and CPUs. However, single FPGA designs may not achieve sufficient task parallelism. In this work, we optimize the mapping of high-performance multi-kernel applications, like Convolutional Neural Networks, to multi-FPGA platforms. First, we formulate the system level optimization problem, choosing within a huge design space the parallelism and number of compute units for each kernel in the pipeline. Then we solve it using a combination of Geometric Programming, producing the optimum performance solution given resource and DRAM bandwidth constraints, and a heuristic allocator of the compute units on the FPGA cluster.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Towards Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics on FPGA devices

    In this paper we describe a single-node, double precision Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) implementation of the Conjugate Gradient algorithm in the context of Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics. As a benchmark of our proposal we invert numerically the Dirac-Wilson operator on a 4-dimensional grid on three Xilinx hardware solutions: Zynq Ultrascale+ evaluation board, the Alveo U250 accelerator and the largest device available on the market, the VU13P device. In our implementation we separate software/hardware parts in such a way that the entire multiplication by the Dirac operator is performed in hardware, and the rest of the algorithm runs on the host. We find out that the FPGA implementation can offer a performance comparable with that obtained using current CPU or Intel's many core Xeon Phi accelerators. A possible multiple node FPGA-based system is discussed and we argue that power-efficient High Performance Computing (HPC) systems can be implemented using FPGA devices only.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure

    High-level synthesis optimization for blocked floating-point matrix multiplication

    In the last decade floating-point matrix multiplication on FPGAs has been studied extensively and efficient architectures as well as detailed performance models have been developed. By design these IP cores take a fixed footprint which not necessarily optimizes the use of all available resources. Moreover, the low-level architectures are not easily amenable to a parameterized synthesis. In this paper high-level synthesis is used to fine-tune the configuration parameters in order to achieve the highest performance with maximal resource utilization. An\ exploration strategy is presented to optimize the use of critical resources (DSPs, memory) for any given FPGA. To account for the limited memory size on the FPGA, a block-oriented matrix multiplication is organized such that the block summation is done on the CPU while the block multiplication occurs on the logic fabric simultaneously. The communication overhead between the CPU and the FPGA is minimized by streaming the blocks in a Gray code ordering scheme which maximizes the data reuse for consecutive block matrix product calculations. Using high-level synthesis optimization, the programmable logic operates at 93% of the theoretical peak performance and the combined CPU-FPGA design achieves 76% of the available hardware processing speed for the floating-point multiplication of 2K by 2K matrices

    Towards a Scalable Hardware/Software Co-Design Platform for Real-time Pedestrian Tracking Based on a ZYNQ-7000 Device

    Currently, most designers face a daunting task to research different design flows and learn the intricacies of specific software from various manufacturers in hardware/software co-design. An urgent need of creating a scalable hardware/software co-design platform has become a key strategic element for developing hardware/software integrated systems. In this paper, we propose a new design flow for building a scalable co-design platform on FPGA-based system-on-chip. We employ an integrated approach to implement a histogram oriented gradients (HOG) and a support vector machine (SVM) classification on a programmable device for pedestrian tracking. Not only was hardware resource analysis reported, but the precision and success rates of pedestrian tracking on nine open access image data sets are also analysed. Finally, our proposed design flow can be used for any real-time image processingrelated products on programmable ZYNQ-based embedded systems, which benefits from a reduced design time and provide a scalable solution for embedded image processing products

    High-Level Annotation of Routing Congestion for Xilinx Vivado HLS Designs

    Ever since transistor cost stopped decreasing, customized programmable platforms, such as field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), became a major way to improve software execution performance and energy consumption. While software developers can use high-level synthesis (HLS) to speed up register-transfer level (RTL) code generation from C++ or OpenCL source code, placement and routing issues, such as congestion, can still prevent achieving an FPGA programming bitstream or dramatically reduce the FPGA implementation performance. Congestion reports from physical design tools refer to thousands of RTL signal names instead of developer-accessible identifiers and statements, considerably complicating the developer understanding and resolution of the issues at the source level. We propose a high-level back-annotation flow that summarizes the routing congestion issues at the source level by analyzing the reports from the FPGA physical design tools and the internal debugging files of the HLS tools. Our flow describes congestion using comments back-annotated on the source code and identifies if the congestion causes are the on-chip memories or the DSP units (multipliers/adders), which are the shared resources very often associated with routing problems on FPGAs. We demonstrate on realistic large designs how the information provided by our flow helps to quickly spot congestion causes at the source level and to solve them using appropriate HLS directives

    FPGA-Based Acceleration of the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) Algorithm using High-Level Synthesis

    One of the fastest growing and the most demanding areas of computer science is Machine Learning (ML). Self-Organizing Map (SOM), categorized as unsupervised ML, is a popular data-mining algorithm widely used in Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for mapping high dimensional data into low dimensional feature maps. SOM, being computationally intensive, requires high computational time and power when dealing with large datasets. Acceleration of many computationally intensive algorithms can be achieved using Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) but it requires extensive hardware knowledge and longer development time when employing traditional Hardware Description Language (HDL) based design methodology. Open Computing Language (OpenCL) is a standard framework for writing parallel computing programs that execute on heterogeneous computing systems. Intel FPGA Software Development Kit for OpenCL (IFSO) is a High-Level Synthesis (HLS) tool that provides a more efficient alternative to HDL-based design. This research presents an optimized OpenCL implementation of SOM algorithm on Stratix V and Arria 10 FPGAs using IFSO. Compared to recent SOM implementations on Central Processing Unit (CPU) and Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), our OpenCL implementation on FPGAs provides superior speed performance and power consumption results. Stratix V achieves speedup of 1.41x - 16.55x compared to AMD and Intel CPU and 2.18x compared to Nvidia GPU whereas Arria 10 achieves speedup of 1.63x - 19.15x compared to AMD and Intel CPU and 2.52x compared to Nvidia GPU. In terms of power consumption, Stratix V is 35.53x and 42.53x whereas Arria 10 is 15.82x and 15.93x more power efficient compared to CPU and GPU respectively
