    Digital Filter Design Using Improved Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization

    Digital filters are an important part of digital signal processing systems. Digital filters are divided into finite impulse response (FIR) digital filters and infinite impulse response (IIR) digital filters according to the length of their impulse responses. An FIR digital filter is easier to implement than an IIR digital filter because of its linear phase and stability properties. In terms of the stability of an IIR digital filter, the poles generated in the denominator are subject to stability constraints. In addition, a digital filter can be categorized as one-dimensional or multi-dimensional digital filters according to the dimensions of the signal to be processed. However, for the design of IIR digital filters, traditional design methods have the disadvantages of easy to fall into a local optimum and slow convergence. The Teaching-Learning-Based optimization (TLBO) algorithm has been proven beneficial in a wide range of engineering applications. To this end, this dissertation focusses on using TLBO and its improved algorithms to design five types of digital filters, which include linear phase FIR digital filters, multiobjective general FIR digital filters, multiobjective IIR digital filters, two-dimensional (2-D) linear phase FIR digital filters, and 2-D nonlinear phase FIR digital filters. Among them, linear phase FIR digital filters, 2-D linear phase FIR digital filters, and 2-D nonlinear phase FIR digital filters use single-objective type of TLBO algorithms to optimize; multiobjective general FIR digital filters use multiobjective non-dominated TLBO (MOTLBO) algorithm to optimize; and multiobjective IIR digital filters use MOTLBO with Euclidean distance to optimize. The design results of the five types of filter designs are compared to those obtained by other state-of-the-art design methods. In this dissertation, two major improvements are proposed to enhance the performance of the standard TLBO algorithm. The first improvement is to apply a gradient-based learning to replace the TLBO learner phase to reduce approximation error(s) and CPU time without sacrificing design accuracy for linear phase FIR digital filter design. The second improvement is to incorporate Manhattan distance to simplify the procedure of the multiobjective non-dominated TLBO (MOTLBO) algorithm for general FIR digital filter design. The design results obtained by the two improvements have demonstrated their efficiency and effectiveness

    Digital Filter Design Using Improved Artificial Bee Colony Algorithms

    Digital filters are often used in digital signal processing applications. The design objective of a digital filter is to find the optimal set of filter coefficients, which satisfies the desired specifications of magnitude and group delay responses. Evolutionary algorithms are population-based meta-heuristic algorithms inspired by the biological behaviors of species. Compared to gradient-based optimization algorithms such as steepest descent and Newton’s like methods, these bio-inspired algorithms have the advantages of not getting stuck at local optima and being independent of the starting point in the solution space. The limitations of evolutionary algorithms include the presence of control parameters, problem specific tuning procedure, premature convergence and slower convergence rate. The artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm is a swarm-based search meta-heuristic algorithm inspired by the foraging behaviors of honey bee colonies, with the benefit of a relatively fewer control parameters. In its original form, the ABC algorithm has certain limitations such as low convergence rate, and insufficient balance between exploration and exploitation in the search equations. In this dissertation, an ABC-AMR algorithm is proposed by incorporating an adaptive modification rate (AMR) into the original ABC algorithm to increase convergence rate by adjusting the balance between exploration and exploitation in the search equations through an adaptive determination of the number of parameters to be updated in every iteration. A constrained ABC-AMR algorithm is also developed for solving constrained optimization problems.There are many real-world problems requiring simultaneous optimizations of more than one conflicting objectives. Multiobjective (MO) optimization produces a set of feasible solutions called the Pareto front instead of a single optimum solution. For multiobjective optimization, if a decision maker’s preferences can be incorporated during the optimization process, the search process can be confined to the region of interest instead of searching the entire region. In this dissertation, two algorithms are developed for such incorporation. The first one is a reference-point-based MOABC algorithm in which a decision maker’s preferences are included in the optimization process as the reference point. The second one is a physical-programming-based MOABC algorithm in which physical programming is used for setting the region of interest of a decision maker. In this dissertation, the four developed algorithms are applied to solve digital filter design problems. The ABC-AMR algorithm is used to design Types 3 and 4 linear phase FIR differentiators, and the results are compared to those obtained by the original ABC algorithm, three improved ABC algorithms, and the Parks-McClellan algorithm. The constrained ABC-AMR algorithm is applied to the design of sparse Type 1 linear phase FIR filters of filter orders 60, 70 and 80, and the results are compared to three state-of-the-art design methods. The reference-point-based multiobjective ABC algorithm is used to design of asymmetric lowpass, highpass, bandpass and bandstop FIR filters, and the results are compared to those obtained by the preference-based multiobjective differential evolution algorithm. The physical-programming-based multiobjective ABC algorithm is used to design IIR lowpass, highpass and bandpass filters, and the results are compared to three state-of-the-art design methods. Based on the obtained design results, the four design algorithms are shown to be competitive as compared to the state-of-the-art design methods

    Digital Filter Design Using Multiobjective Cuckoo Search Algorithm

    Digital filters can be divided into finite impulse response (FIR) digital filters and infinite impulse response (IIR) digital filters. Evolutionary algorithms are effective techniques in digital filter designs. One such evolutionary algorithm is Cuckoo Search Algorithm (CSA). The CSA is a heuristic algorithm which emulates a special parasitic hatching habit of some species of cuckoos and have been proved to be an effective method with various applications. This thesis compares CSA with Park-McClellan algorithm on linear-phase FIR Type-1 lowpass, highpass, bandpass and bandstop digital filter design. Furthermore, a multiobjective Cuckoo Search Algorithm (MOCSA) is applied on general FIR digital design with a comparison to Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm III (NSGA-III). Finally, a constrained multiobjective Cuckoo Search Algorithm is presented and used for IIR digital filter design. The design results of the constrained MOCSA approach compares favorably with other state-of-the-art optimization methods. CSA utilizes Levy flight with wide-range step length for the global walk to assure reaching the global optimum and the approach of local walk to orientate the direction toward the local minima. Furthermore, MOCSA incorporates a method of Euclidean distance combing objective-based equilibrating operations and the searching for the optimal solution into one step and simplifies the procedure of comparison

    Design of Digital Integrator for Rogowski Coil Sensor

    The goal of this thesis is to create a well performed digital Rogowski coil integrator on PC for later implementation on FPGA, and the final filter is applied with fixed point arithmetic. Integrator’s design and optimization based on the specification provided by the company. During the implementation, the constraints of the hardware should be taken into account, and the design method needs to be verified by simulations and practical experiments and tests. There are two design phases to implementing the filter. The first phase is software implementation, the integrator is realized by creating the MATLAB and C models. The other phase is hardware realization. By software application, the filter could be simu-lated with targeted test benches. After the software application is verified, hardware implementation could be carried out if it is necessary. In this thesis, RTL model is de-rived from the C model via translating it with VHDL. Afterward, the integrator is im-plemented on FPGA board for practical field tests. From the tests, the validity, practicability of the Rogowski integrator have to be veri-fied from the perspective of both functionality and performance. The software imple-mentation of the integrator is capable of filtering different kinds of the input signals with reasonable and acceptable outputs. Meanwhile, in the practical application, the integrator performed well when dealing with various earth fault cases. All, in brief, this Rogowski integrator has to satisfy the standard of the design specification

    Performance comparison of optimal fractional order hybrid fuzzy PID controllers for handling oscillatory fractional order processes with dead time

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record.Fuzzy logic based PID controllers have been studied in this paper, considering several combinations of hybrid controllers by grouping the proportional, integral and derivative actions with fuzzy inferencing in different forms. Fractional order (FO) rate of error signal and FO integral of control signal have been used in the design of a family of decomposed hybrid FO fuzzy PID controllers. The input and output scaling factors (SF) along with the integro-differential operators are tuned with real coded genetic algorithm (GA) to produce optimum closed loop performance by simultaneous consideration of the control loop error index and the control signal. Three different classes of fractional order oscillatory processes with various levels of relative dominance between time constant and time delay have been used to test the comparative merits of the proposed family of hybrid fractional order fuzzy PID controllers. Performance comparison of the different FO fuzzy PID controller structures has been done in terms of optimal set-point tracking, load disturbance rejection and minimal variation of manipulated variable or smaller actuator requirement etc. In addition, multi-objective Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) has been used to study the Pareto optimal trade-offs between the set point tracking and control signal, and the set point tracking and load disturbance performance for each of the controller structure to handle the three different types of processes

    Improving Maternal and Fetal Cardiac Monitoring Using Artificial Intelligence

    Early diagnosis of possible risks in the physiological status of fetus and mother during pregnancy and delivery is critical and can reduce mortality and morbidity. For example, early detection of life-threatening congenital heart disease may increase survival rate and reduce morbidity while allowing parents to make informed decisions. To study cardiac function, a variety of signals are required to be collected. In practice, several heart monitoring methods, such as electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmography (PPG), are commonly performed. Although there are several methods for monitoring fetal and maternal health, research is currently underway to enhance the mobility, accuracy, automation, and noise resistance of these methods to be used extensively, even at home. Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help to design a precise and convenient monitoring system. To achieve the goals, the following objectives are defined in this research: The first step for a signal acquisition system is to obtain high-quality signals. As the first objective, a signal processing scheme is explored to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of signals and extract the desired signal from a noisy one with negative SNR (i.e., power of noise is greater than signal). It is worth mentioning that ECG and PPG signals are sensitive to noise from a variety of sources, increasing the risk of misunderstanding and interfering with the diagnostic process. The noises typically arise from power line interference, white noise, electrode contact noise, muscle contraction, baseline wandering, instrument noise, motion artifacts, electrosurgical noise. Even a slight variation in the obtained ECG waveform can impair the understanding of the patient's heart condition and affect the treatment procedure. Recent solutions, such as adaptive and blind source separation (BSS) algorithms, still have drawbacks, such as the need for noise or desired signal model, tuning and calibration, and inefficiency when dealing with excessively noisy signals. Therefore, the final goal of this step is to develop a robust algorithm that can estimate noise, even when SNR is negative, using the BSS method and remove it based on an adaptive filter. The second objective is defined for monitoring maternal and fetal ECG. Previous methods that were non-invasive used maternal abdominal ECG (MECG) for extracting fetal ECG (FECG). These methods need to be calibrated to generalize well. In other words, for each new subject, a calibration with a trustable device is required, which makes it difficult and time-consuming. The calibration is also susceptible to errors. We explore deep learning (DL) models for domain mapping, such as Cycle-Consistent Adversarial Networks, to map MECG to fetal ECG (FECG) and vice versa. The advantages of the proposed DL method over state-of-the-art approaches, such as adaptive filters or blind source separation, are that the proposed method is generalized well on unseen subjects. Moreover, it does not need calibration and is not sensitive to the heart rate variability of mother and fetal; it can also handle low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. Thirdly, AI-based system that can measure continuous systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) with minimum electrode requirements is explored. The most common method of measuring blood pressure is using cuff-based equipment, which cannot monitor blood pressure continuously, requires calibration, and is difficult to use. Other solutions use a synchronized ECG and PPG combination, which is still inconvenient and challenging to synchronize. The proposed method overcomes those issues and only uses PPG signal, comparing to other solutions. Using only PPG for blood pressure is more convenient since it is only one electrode on the finger where its acquisition is more resilient against error due to movement. The fourth objective is to detect anomalies on FECG data. The requirement of thousands of manually annotated samples is a concern for state-of-the-art detection systems, especially for fetal ECG (FECG), where there are few publicly available FECG datasets annotated for each FECG beat. Therefore, we will utilize active learning and transfer-learning concept to train a FECG anomaly detection system with the least training samples and high accuracy. In this part, a model is trained for detecting ECG anomalies in adults. Later this model is trained to detect anomalies on FECG. We only select more influential samples from the training set for training, which leads to training with the least effort. Because of physician shortages and rural geography, pregnant women's ability to get prenatal care might be improved through remote monitoring, especially when access to prenatal care is limited. Increased compliance with prenatal treatment and linked care amongst various providers are two possible benefits of remote monitoring. If recorded signals are transmitted correctly, maternal and fetal remote monitoring can be effective. Therefore, the last objective is to design a compression algorithm that can compress signals (like ECG) with a higher ratio than state-of-the-art and perform decompression fast without distortion. The proposed compression is fast thanks to the time domain B-Spline approach, and compressed data can be used for visualization and monitoring without decompression owing to the B-spline properties. Moreover, the stochastic optimization is designed to retain the signal quality and does not distort signal for diagnosis purposes while having a high compression ratio. In summary, components for creating an end-to-end system for day-to-day maternal and fetal cardiac monitoring can be envisioned as a mix of all tasks listed above. PPG and ECG recorded from the mother can be denoised using deconvolution strategy. Then, compression can be employed for transmitting signal. The trained CycleGAN model can be used for extracting FECG from MECG. Then, trained model using active transfer learning can detect anomaly on both MECG and FECG. Simultaneously, maternal BP is retrieved from the PPG signal. This information can be used for monitoring the cardiac status of mother and fetus, and also can be used for filling reports such as partogram
