    Multiclassification of license plate based on deep convolution neural networks

    In the classification of license plate there are some challenges such that the different sizes of plate numbers, the plates' background, and the number of the dataset of the plates. In this paper, a multiclass classification model established using deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify the license plate for three countries (Armenia, Belarus, Hungary) with the dataset of 600 images as 200 images for each class (160 for training and 40 for validation sets). Because of the small numbers of datasets, a preprocessing on the dataset is performed using pixel normalization and image data augmentation techniques (rotation, horizontal flip, zoom range) to increase the number of datasets. After that, we feed the augmented images into the convolution layer model, which consists of four blocks of convolution layer. For calculating and optimizing the efficiency of the classification model, a categorical cross-entropy and Adam optimizer used with a learning rate was 0.0001. The model's performance showed 99.17% and 97.50% of the training and validation sets accuracies sequentially, with total accuracy of classification is 96.66%. The time of training is lasting for 12 minutes. An anaconda python 3.7 and Keras Tensor flow backend are used

    Vehicle logo recognition using histograms of oriented gradient descriptor and sparsity score

    Most of vehicle have the similar structures and designs. It is extremely complicated and difficult to identify and classify vehicle brands based on their structure and shape. As we requirea quick and reliable response, so vehicle logos are an alternative method of determining the type of a vehicle. In this paper, we propose a method for vehicle logo recognition based on feature  selection method in a hybrid way. Vehicle logo images are first characterized by histograms of oriented gradient descriptors and the final features vector are then applied feature selection method to reduce the irrelevant information. Moreover, we release a new benchmark dataset for vehicle logo recognition and retrieval task namely, VLR-40. The experimental results are evaluated on this database which show the efficiency of the proposed approach

    Deep Learning for Scene Text Detection, Recognition, and Understanding

    Detecting and recognizing texts in images is a long-standing task in computer vision. The goal of this task is to extract textual information from images and videos, such as recognizing license plates. Despite that the great progresses have been made in recent years, it still remains challenging due to the wide range of variations in text appearance. In this thesis, we aim to review the existing issues that hinder current Optical Character Recognition (OCR) development and explore potential solutions. Specifically, we first investigate the phenomenon of unfair comparisons between different OCR algorithms caused due to the lack of a consistent evaluation framework. Such an absence of a unified evaluation protocol leads to inconsistent and unreliable results, making it difficult to compare and improve upon existing methods. To tackle this issue, we design a new evaluation framework from the aspect of datasets, metrics, and models, enabling consistent and fair comparisons between OCR systems. Another issue existing in the field is the imbalanced distribution of training samples. In particular, the sample distribution largely depended on where and how the data was collected, and the resulting data bias may lead to poor performance and low generalizability on under-represented classes. To address this problem, we took the driving license plate recognition task as an example and proposed a text-to-image model that is able to synthesize photo-realistic text samples. By using this model, we synthesized more than one million samples to augment the training dataset, significantly improving the generalization capability of OCR models. Additionally, this thesis also explores the application of text vision question answering, which is a new and emerging research topic among the OCR community. This task challenges the OCR models to understand the relationships between the text and backgrounds and to answer the given questions.     Parking lot monitoring system using an autonomous quadrotor UAV

    The main goal of this thesis is to develop a drone-based parking lot monitoring system using low-cost hardware and open-source software. Similar to wall-mounted surveillance cameras, a drone-based system can monitor parking lots without affecting the flow of traffic while also offering the mobility of patrol vehicles. The Parrot AR Drone 2.0 is the quadrotor drone used in this work due to its modularity and cost efficiency. Video and navigation data (including GPS) are communicated to a host computer using a Wi-Fi connection. The host computer analyzes navigation data using a custom flight control loop to determine control commands to be sent to the drone.     Exploiting Spatio-Temporal Coherence for Video Object Detection in Robotics

    This paper proposes a method to enhance video object detection for indoor environments in robotics. Concretely, it exploits knowledge about the camera motion between frames to propagate previously detected objects to successive frames. The proposal is rooted in the concepts of planar homography to propose regions of interest where to find objects, and recursive Bayesian filtering to integrate observations over time. The proposal is evaluated on six virtual, indoor environments, accounting for the detection of nine object classes over a total of ∼ 7k frames. Results show that our proposal improves the recall and the F1-score by a factor of 1.41 and 1.27, respectively, as well as it achieves a significant reduction of the object categorization entropy (58.8%) when compared to a two-stage video object detection method used as baseline, at the cost of small time overheads (120 ms) and precision loss (0.92).</p

    Data-driven Methodologies and Applications in Urban Mobility

    The world is urbanizing at an unprecedented rate where urbanization goes from 39% in 1980 to 58% in 2019 (World Bank, 2019). This poses more and more transportation demand and pressure on the already at or over-capacity old transport infrastructure, especially in urban areas. Along the same timeline, more data generated as a byproduct of daily activity are being collected via the advancement of the internet of things, and computers are getting more and more powerful. These are shown by the statistics such as 90% of the world’s data is generated within the last two years and IBM’s computer is now processing at the speed of 120,000 GPS points per second. Thus, this dissertation discusses the challenges and opportunities arising from the growing demand for urban mobility, particularly in cities with outdated infrastructure, and how to capitalize on the unprecedented growth in data in solving these problems by ways of data-driven transportation-specific methodologies. The dissertation identifies three primary challenges and/or opportunities, which are (1) optimally locating dynamic wireless charging to promote the adoption of electric vehicles, (2) predicting dynamic traffic state using an enormously large dataset of taxi trips, and (3) improving the ride-hailing system with carpooling, smart dispatching, and preemptive repositioning. The dissertation presents potential solutions/methodologies that have become available only recently thanks to the extraordinary growth of data and computers with explosive power, and these methodologies are (1) bi-level optimization planning frameworks for locating dynamic wireless charging facilities, (2) Traffic Graph Convolutional Network for dynamic urban traffic state estimation, and (3) Graph Matching and Reinforcement Learning for the operation and management of mixed autonomous electric taxi fleets. These methodologies are then carefully calibrated, methodically scrutinized under various performance metrics and procedures, and validated with previous research and ground truth data, which is gathered directly from the real world. In order to bridge the gap between scientific discoveries and practical applications, the three methodologies are applied to the case study of (1) Montgomery County, MD, (2) the City of New York, and (3) the City of Chicago and from which, real-world implementation are suggested. This dissertation’s contribution via the provided methodologies, along with the continual increase in data, have the potential to significantly benefit urban mobility and work toward a sustainable transportation system

    Advanced document data extraction techniques to improve supply chain performance

    In this thesis, a novel machine learning technique to extract text-based information from scanned images has been developed. This information extraction is performed in the context of scanned invoices and bills used in financial transactions. These financial transactions contain a considerable amount of data that must be extracted, refined, and stored digitally before it can be used for analysis. Converting this data into a digital format is often a time-consuming process. Automation and data optimisation show promise as methods for reducing the time required and the cost of Supply Chain Management (SCM) processes, especially Supplier Invoice Management (SIM), Financial Supply Chain Management (FSCM) and Supply Chain procurement processes. This thesis uses a cross-disciplinary approach involving Computer Science and Operational Management to explore the benefit of automated invoice data extraction in business and its impact on SCM. The study adopts a multimethod approach based on empirical research, surveys, and interviews performed on selected companies.The expert system developed in this thesis focuses on two distinct areas of research: Text/Object Detection and Text Extraction. For Text/Object Detection, the Faster R-CNN model was analysed. While this model yields outstanding results in terms of object detection, it is limited by poor performance when image quality is low. The Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) model is proposed in response to this limitation. The GAN model is a generator network that is implemented with the help of the Faster R-CNN model and a discriminator that relies on PatchGAN. The output of the GAN model is text data with bonding boxes. For text extraction from the bounding box, a novel data extraction framework consisting of various processes including XML processing in case of existing OCR engine, bounding box pre-processing, text clean up, OCR error correction, spell check, type check, pattern-based matching, and finally, a learning mechanism for automatizing future data extraction was designed. Whichever fields the system can extract successfully are provided in key-value format.The efficiency of the proposed system was validated using existing datasets such as SROIE and VATI. Real-time data was validated using invoices that were collected by two companies that provide invoice automation services in various countries. Currently, these scanned invoices are sent to an OCR system such as OmniPage, Tesseract, or ABBYY FRE to extract text blocks and later, a rule-based engine is used to extract relevant data. While the system’s methodology is robust, the companies surveyed were not satisfied with its accuracy. Thus, they sought out new, optimized solutions. To confirm the results, the engines were used to return XML-based files with text and metadata identified. The output XML data was then fed into this new system for information extraction. This system uses the existing OCR engine and a novel, self-adaptive, learning-based OCR engine. This new engine is based on the GAN model for better text identification. Experiments were conducted on various invoice formats to further test and refine its extraction capabilities. For cost optimisation and the analysis of spend classification, additional data were provided by another company in London that holds expertise in reducing their clients' procurement costs. This data was fed into our system to get a deeper level of spend classification and categorisation. This helped the company to reduce its reliance on human effort and allowed for greater efficiency in comparison with the process of performing similar tasks manually using excel sheets and Business Intelligence (BI) tools.The intention behind the development of this novel methodology was twofold. First, to test and develop a novel solution that does not depend on any specific OCR technology. Second, to increase the information extraction accuracy factor over that of existing methodologies. Finally, it evaluates the real-world need for the system and the impact it would have on SCM. This newly developed method is generic and can extract text from any given invoice, making it a valuable tool for optimizing SCM.
