    Improving performance guarantees in wormhole mesh NoC designs

    Wormhole-based mesh Networks-on-Chip (wNoC) are deployed in high-performance many-core processors due to their physical scalability and low-cost. Delivering tight and time composable Worst-Case Execution Time (WCET) estimates for applications as needed in safety-critical real-time embedded systems is challenged by wNoCs due to their distributed nature. We propose a bandwidth control mechanism for wNoCs that enables the computation of tight time-composable WCET estimates with low average performance degradation and high scalability.     NoCo: ILP-based worst-case contention estimation for mesh real-time manycores

    Manycores are capable of providing the computational demands required by functionally-advanced critical applications in domains such as automotive and avionics. In manycores a network-on-chip (NoC) provides access to shared caches and memories and hence concentrates most of the contention that tasks suffer, with effects on the worst-case contention delay (WCD) of packets and tasks' WCET. While several proposals minimize the impact of individual NoC parameters on WCD, e.g. mapping and routing, there are strong dependences among these NoC parameters. Hence, finding the optimal NoC configurations requires optimizing all parameters simultaneously, which represents a multidimensional optimization problem. In this paper we propose NoCo, a novel approach that combines ILP and stochastic optimization to find NoC configurations in terms of packet routing, application mapping, and arbitration weight allocation.     Modeling high-performance wormhole NoCs for critical real-time embedded systems

    Manycore chips are a promising computing platform to cope with the increasing performance needs of critical real-time embedded systems (CRTES). However, manycores adoption by CRTES industry requires understanding task's timing behavior when their requests use manycore's network-on-chip (NoC) to access hardware shared resources. This paper analyzes the contention in wormhole-based NoC (wNoC) designs - widely implemented in the high-performance domain - for which we introduce a new metric: worst-contention delay (WCD) that captures wNoC impact on worst-case execution time (WCET) in a tighter manner than the existing metric, worst-case traversal time (WCTT). Moreover, we provide an analytical model of the WCD that requests can suffer in a wNoC and we validate it against wNoC designs resembling those in the Tilera-Gx36 and the Intel-SCC 48-core processors. Building on top of our WCD analytical model, we analyze the impact on WCD that different design parameters such as the number of virtual channels, and we make a set of recommendations on what wNoC setups to use in the context of CRTES.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Seismic Wave Propagation Simulations on Low-power and Performance-centric Manycores

    International audienceThe large processing requirements of seismic wave propagation simulations make High Performance Computing (HPC) architectures a natural choice for their execution. However, to keep both the current pace of performance improvements and the power consumption under a strict power budget, HPC systems must be more energy e than ever. As a response to this need, energy-e and low-power processors began to make their way into the market. In this paper we employ a novel low-power processor, the MPPA-256 manycore, to perform seismic wave propagation simulations. It has 256 cores connected by a NoC, no cache-coherence and only a limited amount of on-chip memory. We describe how its particular architectural characteristics influenced our solution for an energy-e implementation. As a counterpoint to the low-power MPPA-256 architecture, we employ Xeon Phi, a performance-centric manycore. Although both processors share some architectural similarities, the challenges to implement an e seismic wave propagation kernel on these platforms are very di↵erent. In this work we compare the performance and energy e of our implementations for these processors to proven and optimized solutions for other hardware platforms such as general-purpose processors and a GPU. Our experimental results show that MPPA-256 has the best energy e consuming at least 77 % less energy than the other evaluated platforms, whereas the performance of our solution for the Xeon Phi is on par with a state-of-the-art solution for GPUs

    Self-Timed Periodic Scheduling For Cyclo-Static DataFlow Model

    International audienceReal-time and time-constrained applications programmed on many-core systems can suffer from unmet timing constraints even with correct-by-construction schedules. Such unexpected results are usually caused by unaccounted for delays due to resource sharing (e.g. the communication medium). In this paper we address the three main sources of unpredictable behaviors: First, we propose to use a deterministic Model of Computation (MoC), more specifically, the well-formed CSDF subset of process networks; Second, we propose a run-time management strategy of shared resources to avoid unpredictable timings; Third, we promote the use of a new scheduling policy, the so-said Self-Timed Periodic (STP) scheduling, to improve performance and decrease synchronization costs by taking into account resource sharing or resource constraints. This is a quantitative improvement above state-of-the-art scheduling policies which assumed fixed delays of inter-processor communication and did not take correctly into account subtle effects of synchronization

    RMem: An OS Service for Transparent Remote Memory Access in Lightweight Manycores

    International audienceLightweight manycores deliver high performance and scal-ability at low power consumption. However, architectural intricacies of these processors impose programmability challenges that keep them away from mass adoption. While several efforts aim at introducing parallel programming environments to lightweight manycores, few initiatives are concerned about how to design rich Operating Systems (OSs) to them. In this work, we focus on the open challenges that arise from constrained memory subsystems of lightweight manycores, such as the presence of multiple address spaces and limited on-chip memory. To cope with transparent data access in this scenario, we introduce an OS service, named RMem. This service provides a shared memory abstraction over multiple address spaces and exposes system calls that enable one-sided communication on top of this abstraction. We implemented a prototype of our service in the Nanvix research OS, and we deployed the system the Kalray MPPA-256 lightweight manycore. Our experimental results with a microbenchmark unveiled that, while exposing an easier-to-program interface, the RMem Service may deliver about 91% of the write performance and up to 2.4Ă— better read performance than the primitives in the libraries of the experimental platform

    On the Energy Efficiency and Performance of Irregular Application Executions on Multicore, NUMA and Manycore Platforms

    International audienceUntil the last decade, performance of HPC architectures has been almost exclusively quantifiedby their processing power. However, energy efficiency is being recently considered as importantas raw performance and has become a critical aspect to the development of scalablesystems. These strict energy constraints guided the development of a new class of so-calledlight-weight manycore processors. This study evaluates the computing and energy performanceof two well-known irregular NP-hard problems — the Traveling-Salesman Problem (TSP) andK-Means clustering—and a numerical seismic wave propagation simulation kernel—Ondes3D—on multicore, NUMA, and manycore platforms. First, we concentrate on the nontrivial task ofadapting these applications to a manycore, specifically the novel MPPA-256 manycore processor.Then, we analyze their performance and energy consumption on those di↵erent machines.Our results show that applications able to fully use the resources of a manycore can have betterperformance and may consume from 3.8x to 13x less energy when compared to low-power andgeneral-purpose multicore processors, respectivel

    Benchmarking CPUs and GPUs on embedded platforms for software receiver usage

    Smartphones containing multi-core central processing units (CPUs) and powerful many-core graphics processing units (GPUs) bring supercomputing technology into your pocket (or into our embedded devices). This can be exploited to produce power-efficient, customized receivers with flexible correlation schemes and more advanced positioning techniques. For example, promising techniques such as the Direct Position Estimation paradigm or usage of tracking solutions based on particle filtering, seem to be very appealing in challenging environments but are likewise computationally quite demanding. This article sheds some light onto recent embedded processor developments, benchmarks Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and correlation algorithms on representative embedded platforms and relates the results to the use in GNSS software radios. The use of embedded CPUs for signal tracking seems to be straight forward, but more research is required to fully achieve the nominal peak performance of an embedded GPU for FFT computation.     Actors: The Ideal Abstraction for Programming Kernel-Based Concurrency

    GPU and multicore hardware architectures are commonly used in many different application areas to accelerate problem solutions relative to single CPU architectures. The typical approach to accessing these hardware architectures requires embedding logic into the programming language used to construct the application; the two primary forms of embedding are: calls to API routines to access the concurrent functionality, or pragmas providing concurrency hints to a language compiler such that particular blocks of code are targeted to the concurrent functionality. The former approach is verbose and semantically bankrupt, while the success of the latter approach is restricted to simple, static uses of the functionality. Actor-based applications are constructed from independent, encapsulated actors that interact through strongly-typed channels. This paper presents a first attempt at using actors to program kernels targeted at such concurrent hardware. Besides the glove-like fit of a kernel to the actor abstraction, quantitative code analysis shows that actor-based kernels are always significantly simpler than API-based coding, and generally simpler than pragma-based coding. Additionally, performance measurements show that the overheads of actor-based kernels are commensurate to API-based kernels, and range from equivalent to vastly improved for pragma-based annotations, both for sample and real-world applications
