A Lightweight Speech Detection System for Perceptive Environments
International audienceIn this paper, we address the problem of speech activity detection in multimodal perceptive environments. Such space may contain many different microphones (lapel, distant or table top). Thus, we need a generic speech activity detector in order to cope with different speech conditions (from closetalking to noisy distant speech). Moreover, as the number of microphones in the room can be high, we also need a very light system. The speech activity detector presented in this article works efficiently on dozens of microphones in parallel. We will see that even if its absolute score of the evaluation is not perfect (30% and 40% of error rate respectively on the two tasks), its accuracy is good enough in the context we are using it
Ambient Gestures
We present Ambient Gestures, a novel gesture-based system designed to support ubiquitous ‘in the environment’ interactions with everyday computing technology. Hand gestures and audio feedback allow users to control computer applications without reliance on a graphical user interface, and without having to switch from the context of a non-computer task to the context of the computer. The Ambient Gestures system is composed of a vision recognition software application, a set of gestures to be processed by a scripting application and a navigation and selection application that is controlled by the gestures. This system allows us to explore gestures as the primary means of interaction within a multimodal, multimedia environment. In this paper we describe the Ambient Gestures system, define the gestures and the interactions that can be achieved in this environment and present a formative study of the system. We conclude with a discussion of our findings and future applications of Ambient Gestures in ubiquitous computing

Abstract Industry 4.0 rose with the introduction of cyber-physical systems (CPS) and Internet of things (IoT) inside manufacturing systems. CPS represent self-controlled physical processes, having tight networking capabilities and efficient interfaces for human interaction. The interactive dimension of CPS reaches its maximum when defined in terms of natural human-machine interfaces (NHMI), i.e., those reducing the technological barriers required for the interaction. This paper presents a NHMI bringing the human decision-making capabilities inside the cybernetic control loop of a smart manufacturing assembly system. The interface allows to control, coordinate and cooperate with an industrial cobot during the task execution
O3MiSCID, a Middleware for Pervasive Environments
International audienceThis paper introduces a new lightweight middleware for pervasive environments. This middleware abstracts network communications and provides service introspection and discovery using DNS-SD (DNS-based Service Discovery [1]). Services can declare simplex or duplex communication channels and variables. The middleware supports the low-latency, highbandwidth communications required in interactive perceptual applications. It has been designed to be easy to learn in order to stimulate software reuse in research teams and is revealing to have a high adoption rate
State of the art review on walking support system for visually impaired people
The technology for terrain detection and walking support system for blind people has
rapidly been improved the last couple of decades but to assist visually impaired people may have
started long ago. Currently, a variety of portable or wearable navigation system is available in the
market to help the blind for navigating their way in his local or remote area. The focused
category in this work can be subgroups as electronic travel aids (ETAs), electronic orientation
aids (EOAs) and position locator devices (PLDs). However, we will focus mainly on electronic
travel aids (ETAs). This paper presents a comparative survey among the various portable or
wearable walking support systems as well as informative description (a subcategory of ETAs or
early stages of ETAs) with its working principal advantages and disadvantages so that the
researchers can easily get the current stage of assisting blind technology along with the
requirement for optimising the design of walking support system for its users

Emerging research directions in computer science : contributions from the young informatics faculty in Karlsruhe
In order to build better human-friendly human-computer interfaces,
such interfaces need to be enabled with capabilities to perceive
the user, his location, identity, activities and in particular his interaction
with others and the machine. Only with these perception capabilities
can smart systems ( for example human-friendly robots or smart environments) become posssible. In my research I\u27m thus focusing on the
development of novel techniques for the visual perception of humans and
their activities, in order to facilitate perceptive multimodal interfaces,
humanoid robots and smart environments. My work includes research
on person tracking, person identication, recognition of pointing gestures,
estimation of head orientation and focus of attention, as well as
audio-visual scene and activity analysis. Application areas are humanfriendly
humanoid robots, smart environments, content-based image and
video analysis, as well as safety- and security-related applications. This
article gives a brief overview of my ongoing research activities in these
areas
